Backaround of the Invention Tubes have long since been known as containers for personal care articles such as toothpaste. Other personal care items such as sunscreens have also appeared in tubular form. it is desirable to package other personal care products such as moisturising lotions and cleaning lotions in tubular form as well.

Mechanical aids to personal washing have long been known. An example of this is the well known wash cloth. Another type of washing aid is a pouf, which is made of a mesh like material. The pouf is used in association with, for example, a liquid cleansing agent.

It is sometimes desirable to sell. the pouf together with the product with which it is t..zsed. An example of this would be the sale of a liquid cleansing material together with a pouf to assist in washing. It is desirable that a package used to contain both the pouf and the tube of cleansing material have a number of attributes. For instance, the package should permit both the pouf and Crie tube to be readily and maximally visible to the consumer. Moreover, at, the same time, the package should provide adequate space for printing printed matter such as labels and the like. In addition, it is a desirable that the amount. of packaging material and adhesives or other bonding agents be minimised for environmental and cost reasons.

Various packages, many of which can be used for displaying articles, can be found in the prior art. These include Stone, U.S. Patent No. 3,349,897, Banks et al. U.S. Patent No. 3,093,290, Stone, U.S. Patent No. 3,687,279, McGorty et al., U.S. Patent No. 3,302.778, Randeria, U.S. Patent No.

A system for cleansing the skin comprising a hydrophobic diamond mesh sponge and a liquid cieansing and moisturising composition is disclosed in Wc) 95, '001:16.

Su_mmary of the inyent i on The invention is directed to a carton, a package including a carton and a tube, and a blank for making the carton. The carton includes a bottom panel, a rear panel extending generally perpendicularly from the bottom panel., a first. top panel extending generally perpendicularly to the rear panel and parallel 'to the bottom parlel, a front panel. extending generally perpendicularly from the bottom panel and parallel to the rear panel, wherein the first top and bottom panels include product receiving apertures. Typically, the bottom panel will include a circular receiving aperture for receiving a circular cap for a tube and the first top panel will include a thin retaining slit for locking in a fin on the tube. Preferably, the front panel includes an aperture through which the tube can be viewed.
A benefit to the carton and carton blank of the invention is that the tube contributes importantly to the structure of the carton. That is, the fin-end of the tube is locked into the retaining slit in the first top panel of the carton and the cap end of the tube is received within the product receiving ,C6303 aperture in the bottom panel of the carton such that the tube is positioned to bear a substantial portion of any weight applied to the top of the carton and supports the first top panel and, indirectly the front and rear panels as well.
Preferably a second top panel overlaps at least partially with the first top panel and includes a product retaining aperture which at least partially overlaps with that of the first top panel.

Advantageously, the carton of the invention includes a washing aid such as a mesh like plastic material, e.g. a pouf, which is disposed between the rear of the tube and the front of the rear panel of the carton. It is preferred that the carton not include side panels (::)r flaps depending from the front, rear, bottom or top panels of the carton, so that a clear view of the tube can be obt-_airzed.

An advantage of the carton of the iiivent:ion is that since the tube is locked into place, the need for hot melt or other adhesive materials is either eliminated or reduced.
Generally, the carton will be surrounded and wrapped in shrink wrap so that its contents are clearly apparent through the product viewing aperture in the front panel and through the open sides of the carton.
In the erected carton, the front panel preferably does not receive any portion of the tube, but instead includes the product viewing aperture. "The rear panel likewise does not receive any portion of the tube and in fact may lack any aperture whatsoever.

The blank of the invention comprises a bottom panel, a rear panel, a front. panel, a first top panel and a second top panel wherein the front and second top panels and the bottom panel include product: receiving apertures. Moreover, in r.6303 7 accordance with the preferred aspect of the invention wherein the contents of the package can readily be seen fron- either side the blank preferably does not include any side panels or flaps depending from the bottom, rear, first top, second top or front panels.

The carton is preferably made from corrugated paperboard and is easy to assemble and requires no adhesive while using minimal packaging materials and providing ample graphic area, particularly on the front and top panels.

For a more complete understanding of the above and other features and advantages of the invention, reference should be made to the following detailed description of preferred embodiments and to the accompanying drawings.
Brief Descri.ption of the Draw'~,as Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a blank for making the carton of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a carton according to the invention.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a tube whIch may be accommodated within the carton of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing an assembled carton, tube and pouf in accordance with the .inventi.on, which is shrink wrapped.

Detai.led Descri.otion of theInventign Carton blank 10 includes bottom panel 12, rear panel 14 separated from bottorn panel 12 by transverse scoreline 16, front panel 18 separated from bottom panel 12 by transverse scoreline 20, first top panel 22 separated from front panel 18 by transver'se scoreline 24 and second top panel 26 C.6303 ~~~~~ 0 0' separated from rear panel 14 by transverse scoreline 28.
Bottom panel 12 includes circular product receiving aperture 30. Rear panel 14 does not include any apertures. Front 5 panel 18 includes a large product viewing aperture 32 which is in a circular form, but may be of any desired shape.
First and second top panels 22 and 26 include first and second bell shaped product recei.virig apertures, 34 and 36 each of which includes a semi-circular aspect, 38 and a product receiving slit 40.

An assembled carton made from blank 10 is shown in Fig. 2, absent however the tube. The carton may be assembled by folding panels 18 and 14 upwardly from bottom panel 12 and then folding first and second top panels 22 and 26 toward each other so that tttiey at least partly overlap and so that product receiving apertures 34 and :36 at least partly overlap.

As seen in Fig. 3, tube 44 may be used to contain the moisturising or other product to be contained within the carton. Tube 44 includes a body 46, a cap 48 and a fin 50.
As is apparent from Fig. 3, ends 52, 54 of fin 50 extent beyond side walls 56 and 58 of tube body 46. The purpose of this will be explained below.

In operation, package 60 seen in Fig. 4 is assembled by inserting cap 48 of tube 44 into product receiving aperture 30. Aperture 30 may be slightly smaller in diameter than the diameter of the proximal end 49 of the cap or the cap-end 51 of the tube so that the tube is locked within aperture 30 at the space 53 between the cap and the tube. Then, panels 14 and 18 are folded perpendicularly to bottom panel. 30 and second top panel 26 is folded perpendicularly to rear panel 14 and pushed downwardly so that fin 50 is locked within _Q6303 , 1, 171 retaining slit 40. Preferably the length of slit 40 is just slightly longer than the distance from wall 56 to wall 58 of the tube just below the fin 50 at 70, as seen in Fig. 3. The fin 50 is slightly longer than slit 40, so that the tube is locked within the slit 40. The slit is quite narrow at least at its ends so as better to lock the fin into place. At least at its ends, the slit is only slightly wider than the fin. First top panel. 22 is then folded over second top panel 26 whereby the tube is locked into place within the carton.
The tube locked in place contributes significantly to the structure of the carton, in particular supporting the top panel and any weight applied to the top of the carton, but also supporting indirectly the front and rear panels. In a preferred embodi.ment of tYie invention, in the absence of the tube, the carton 11 shown in Fig. 2 is not weight bearing from above. Preferably, no hot melt or chemical adhesive is used to keep the carton together; locking of the tube in place at its cap and its fin and shrink wrap keep the carton together.

If desired, the positions product receiving aperture and product retaining slit may be reversed so that the tube is disposed in its opposite orientation in the carton.
Pouf 80 is disposed behind tube 46 so that the consumer can use it in conjunction with the product contained in the tube.
The carton may be shrink wrapped as at 82 to keep the components together without obscuring any of the contents and without the need for chemical adhesive.

The overlap of the first and second top panels improves the structure of the carton.

The blank may be made from a corrugated board such as E-C~~

A
7 0w) flute. The tube may be made, for example of appropriate polymeric materials.

It should be understood, of course, that the specific forms of the invention herein illustrated an.d described are intended to be representative only, as certain changes may be made therein without departing frozn the clear teaching of the disclosure. Accordingly, reference should be made to the following appended claims in determz.ni.ng the full scope of the invention.
