Abstract
There is provided a canopy for use with a sleigh or wagon having a frame and a cover which are removably attachable to the sleigh or wagon. The frame and cover could also be combined to form a one-piece canopy.
Description
-21695~0 FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a protective canopy for a sleigh or wagon. In particular, this invention relates to a removable protective canopy.
BACR~ROUND OF THE INVENTION
Sleighs and wagons are often used by parents to transport their children outside.
It is often difficult to keep outside elements such as rain and snow from reaching the child.
Parents often cover their child with a plastic sheet or a blanket to keep the child protected but these tend to get blown away or become wet and dirty through use.
It is an object of the invention to provide a protective canopy for a sleigh or wagon in order to keep a child protected.
Accordingly, in one embodiment of the invention there is provided a canopy for use with a sleigh or wagon comprising a frame which is removably attachable to the sleigh or wagon and a cover which is removably attachable to a sleigh or wagon and/or the frame.
In a further embodiment of the invention there is provided a sleigh having a canopy comprising a frame which is attached to the sleigh and a cover which is attached to the sleigh and/or the frame.
In a still further embodiment of the invention there is provided a wagon having a canopy comprising a frame which is attached to the wagon and a cover which'is attached to the wagon and/or the frame.

DETATT~n DESCRIPTION
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a frame 2 for securing to a sleigh. The frame is formed by a front support rail 4, a rear support rail 6 and two side support rails 8. Two front arms 10 extend downwardly from each junction of the front support rail 4 and side support rail 8. At the lower end of the front arm 10 is a built-in clamp 12 for securing the frame 2 to the sleigh and tightened by means of a screw 14. It will be understood that other means of securing the frame 2 to the sleigh could be used.
- 21~9~i8~
Two rear arms 16 extend downwardly from each junction of the rear support rail 6 and the two side rails 8. A grooved rail 18 extends between the lower ends of the two rear arms 16.
Figure 2 show the frame 2 attached to a sleigh 20.
The sleigh 20 has a ridge 22 along the upper surface of the sleigh 20. The grooved rail 18 engages the ridge 22 at the rear of the sleigh 20. The built-in clamp 12 secures the frame 2 to the ridge 22 at a point along the side of the sleigh 20.
Figure 3 shows the grooved rail 18 engaging the ridge 22.
Figure 4 shows the built-in clamp 12 secured to the ridge 22 by means of a screw 14.
Figure 5 shows the clear protective cover 24 which is placed over the frame 2 (Figure 1). The clear protective cover 24 has a top front panel 26, two front side panels 28, a top rear panel 30, two rear side panels 32 and a rear panel 34. It will be understood that the clear protective cover could be made of unitary construction.
The clear protective cover 24 is secured to the sleigh by two rear elastic portions 36 which are secured over the rear edges of the sleigh, two front elastic portions 38 which are secured over the front edges of the sleigh, and two middle elastic portions 40 which are secured over the two screws 14 (Figure 1). It will be understood that other means of fastening the cover to the sleigh could be used, including velcro fasteners.
Air holes 42 are provided in the clear protective cover to allow for ventilation.
Figure 6 shows one embodiment of the invention where the clear protective cover is made of two parts such that the front part is hinged to the second part to allow a child to be placed in the sleigh though the opening, and to allow air to pass through.
~958~
In operation, the frame 2 is placed on top of the sleigh 20 (as shown in Figure 2). The grooved rail 18 is engaged with the rim 22 of the sleigh 20 along its rear edge.
The frame is then tilted forward so that the built-in clamps 12 on the front arms 10 engage the rim 22 of the sleigh 20 along its sides and are secured by the screws 14.
The clear protective cover is then placed over the frame. The two rear elastic portions 36 are secured over the rear edges of the sleigh; the two front elastic portions 38 are secured over the front edges of the sleigh, and the two middle elastic portions 40 are secured over the two screws 14.
It will be understood that the frame and clear protective cover could be incorporated into one piece.
Referring to Figure 7 there is shown a further embodiment of the invention for securing to a wagon 2.
The frame is formed by two generally U-shaped support rails 4, and at least one support beam 6.
Each end of the U-shaped support rail 4 has a built-in clamp 8 for securing to the wagon rim 10. The built-in clamp is tightened to the wagon rim 10 by means of screws 12. It will be understood that other means of securing the frame 2 to the wagon could be used.
A clear protective cover is shown in Figure 12 for fitting over the frame of Figure 7.
Figures 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 show details of the constructed version of this embodiment.
It will be readily apparent to a person s~illed in the art that a number of variations and modifications can be made without departing from the true spirit of the invention which will now be pointed out in the appended claims.
Additional details can be determined from the following notes of the inventors.
