Abstract
A bathtub suitable for accommodating two human bodies side-by-side. The bathtub comprises a vessel with an enlarged end portion dimensioned to receive side-by-side the backs of two persons adopting a sitting posture. The other extremity of the vessel is narrower yet of sufficient size to hold the feet of the occupants. The resulting wedge configuration allows to nest a toilet against the bathtub. This bathtub configuration is particularly suitable for use in bathrooms with space limitations, particularly those originally designed for single occupancy constant width bathtubs.

1 TITLE: BATHTUB
1 TITLE: BATHTUB
3 The present invention relates to a novel bathtub 4 configuration suitable for accommodating two human bodies side-by-side. The bathtub is compact and can 6 be used advantageously as a replacement for a single 7 occupancy constant width bathtub.
8 BA~K~KOUND OF THE INVENTION
9 Bathroom installations making use of a single occupant, constant width bathtubs, are very popular 11 in North America. The bathtub is usually nested 12 between three walls of the bathroom and also provides 13 the function of a shower stall when equipped with a 14 suitable curtain or sliding shower doors. In addition to the bathtub, the bathroom would also 16 include a toilet bowl located at a certain distance 17 from the bathtub along with a sink that is typically 18 integrated in a counter.
216560~
1 In the past recent years, bathtub manufacturers 2 have developed stylish bathtub designs that can 3 accommodate more than one person. In addition to the 4 aesthetical factor, such dual occupancy bathtubs are provided with whirlpool functions. Unfortunately, it 6 is very difficult and often impossible to replace an 7 existing single occupancy bathtub by a double 8 occupancy design due to space limitations. Indeed, 9 the double occupancy bathtubs are significantly larger than single occupancy bathtubs and can only be 11 made to fit by enlarging the room. Such renovation 12 project would usually require to tear down completely 13 the existing walls of the bathroom and erect new 14 partitions to provide the additional space. In those instances the owner must make provisions for building 16 a new framework, install drywall panels, plaster the 17 joints and painting. Some installations may even 18 require changing the plumbing and the electrical 19 wiring.
Even those expensive and somewhat complex 21 solutions to upgrade the existing bathtub are not 22 always practicable, for a number of reasons. For 23 instance, when the existing bathroom walls constitute -- 216560~
1 part of the external walls of the building they 2 cannot be moved. Space limitations in the area 3 surrounding the bathroom may be another reason. When 4 the walls of the bathroom are moved the ~;mensions of the adjoining rooms are reduced and this may not be 6 acceptable 9 An object of the present invention is a novel bathtub which is suitable for two human bodies side-11 by-side and that can be made to fit in a bathroom 12 designed for a single occupancy constant width 13 bathtub.
14 As embodied and broadly described herein, the invention provides a bathtub suitable for 16 accommodating two human bodies side by side, said 17 bathtub including:
18 - first and second generally opposite side 19 walls;
ZO - second and third generally opposite end walls, 21 said side walls and said end walls being connected to 22 one another to define a closed vessel;
23 - said vessel having a transverse dimension -- ~16~60S
-1 proximate said second end wall sufficient to 2 accommodate two human torsos placed side by side;
3 said vessel having a transverse dimension proximate 4 said third end wall which is substantially less than the transverse dimension proximate said second end 6 wall, said transverse dimension proximate said third 7 end wall being sufficient to accommodate two pair of 8 human feet side by side.
9 In a most preferred embodiment, the bathtub includes a recessed portion on the exposed side wall 11 (the wall that does not faces any of the bathroom 12 walls). The recessed portion is dimensioned to 13 accommodate a toilet bowl. The recessed portion 14 coincides with the area of the bathtub that receives the feet of the occupants. In a most preferred 16 embodiment, the recessed portion is located near one 17 extremity of the bathtub. The other extremity of the 18 bathtub is wider to accommodate the torsos of the 19 occupants.
This novel bathtub configuration takes advantage 21 of the geometry of the human body that tapers from a 22 comparatively wide shoulder part to a relatively ' -1 narrow feet part to provide a structure capable of 2 comfortably accommodating two adults side-by-side and 3 at the same time to nest a toilet against the 4 bathtub. The bathtub is made larger in the area where to torsos of the occupants reside while being 6 narrower in the feet receiving area. This narrowed 7 region forms a recess that can receive the toilet.
8 The resulting bathtub/toilet bowl combination is very 9 compact while being functional and comfortable to use. As such the bathtub/toilet bowl may fit many 11 bathrooms normally designed for a single occupancy, 12 constant width bathtubs, without the necessity of 13 performing major construction work.
14 The novel bathtub can also form a shower stall by providing curtain or shower doors.
16 As embodied and broadly described herein, the 17 invention also provides a combination comprising:
18 A) a bathtub suitable for accommodating two human 19 bodies side by side, said bathtub including:
- first and second generally opposite side walls;
21 - second and third generally opposite end walls, 22 said side walls and said end walls being -216560~
1 connected to one another to define a closed 2 vessel;
3 - said vessel having a transverse dimension 4 proximate said second end wall sufficient to accommodate two human torsos placed side by 6 side;
7 - said vessel having a transverse dimension 8 proximate said third end wall which is 9 substantially less than the transverse dimension proximate said second end wall, said transverse 11 dimension proximate said third end wall being 12 sufficient to accommodate two pairs of human 13 feet side by side;
14 - said first side wall includes a recessed portion;
16 B)a toilet in said recessed portion.
17 As embodied and broadly described herein the 18 invention includes a double occupancy replacement 19 bathtub that can be substituted to a single occupancy bathtub having a length of about 60 inches, said 21 replacement bathtub comprising:
22 - first and second generally opposite side walls;
23 - second and third generally opposite end walls, 1 said side walls and said end walls being 2 connected to one another to define a vessel;
3 - said vessel having a transverse dimension 4 proximate said second end wall sufficient to accommodate two human torsos placed side by 6 side;
7 - one of said side walls including a recess 8 dimensioned to receive a toilet, a transverse 9 dimension of said vessel taken at said recess being sufficient to receive a pair of human 11 feet; and 12 - said bathtub having length of about 60 13 inches.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
16 - Figure 1 is a diagram of a conventional 17 bathroom designed for a single occupancy constant 18 width bathtub;
19 - Figure 2 illustrates the bathroom of Figure 1 with the bathtub and toilet bowl removed and replaced 21 by a combination double occupancy bathtub/toilet;
' -~16560S
1 - Figure 3 is a variant of the bathtub 2 illustrated in Figure 2;
3 - Figure 4 is a top plan view of a bathtub in 4 accordance with a further variant; and - Figure 5 is a vertical cross-sectional view of 6 the bathtub shown in Figure 4.
9Figure 1 diagrams a conventional bathroom 10installation that is very popular in North America.
11The bathroom includes a bathtub 10 dimensioned to 12receive a single person. Typically, the bathtub 10 13has a width of 30 inches and a length of 60 inches.
14The bathtub can be used as a shower stall by 15providing a shower curtain (not shown in the 16drawings) or sliding shower doors ~not shown in the 17drawings).
18A toilet 12 and a counter 14 with a sink are 19placed against one of the longitudinal walls of the bathroom leaving an empty space 16 against the 2 opposite wall. In the arrangement shown, the door 3 18 of the bathroom faces the bathtub 10.
4 Figure 2 illustrates the bathtub 20, in accordance with the present invention, fitted in the 6 space provided for the conventional bathtub 10 and 7 also extending to fill partially the empty space 16.
8 The bathtub 20 includes opposite side walls 22 and 24 9 and opposite end walls 26 is and 28. The walls 22, 24, 26 and 28 connect with each other at rounded 11 corners to form a vessel designed to accommodate two 12 occupants sitting side-by-side. The transverse 13 dimension of the vessel near the end wall 28 is 14 sufficient to accommodate two human torsos placed lS side-by-side. That transverse dimension is in the 16 range from about 39 to about 60 inches, more 17 preferably from about 40 to about 54 inches and most 18 preferably from about 42 to about 51 inches.
19 The end wall 28 include a pair of recesses 30 forming back supports for the occupants.
21 The transverse dimension of the bathtub at the -216360~
1 opposite extremity, near the end wall 26, is 2 significantly narrower but sufficient to accommodate 3 the feet of the occupants. A transverse dimension at 4 that location is in the range from about 20 to about 39 inches, more preferably from about 22 to about 36 6 inches and most preferably from about 24 to about 33 7 inches.
8 The narrowed end portion provides a recessed area 9 32 in which a toilet 34 can be installed. In the embodiment shown in Figure 2, a toilet with a 11 triangular flush tank is shown. This allows to place 12 the toilet very close to the bathtub 20 and thus 13 reduce the space requirements for the installation.
14 In the variant shown in Figure 3, a toilet bowl 34 is installed that uses a rectangular flush tank.
16 This variant is not as space efficient as the 17 previous one, however it provides enough space to 18 build a pedestal 38 to hold flowers or bathing 19 accessories.
The novel bathtub 20 can form the base of a 21 shower stall in the same way as a traditional 22 bathtub.
-216560~
1 Objectively, the bathtub 20 is somewhat larger 2 than the conventional bathtub 10, however the 3 additional space taken away coincides with the empty 4 zone 16. As such, the installation of the bathtub 20 does not require any modifications to the walls or 6 other major structural work.
7 A further variant of the bathtub is shown in 8 Figure 4. The corner region between walls 26 and 22 9 includes a footrest 40 against which the feet of the occupant sitting next to the side wall 24 can be 11 supported. This feature increases the comfort 12 potential of the bathtub by preventing one of the 13 occupants from having a tendency to slide and sink in 14 the bathtub.
Figure 5 is a vertical cross sectional view of 16 the bathtub shown in Figure 4. The footrest 40 is a 17 projection located at the base of the bathtub on the 18 side wall 22 and includes a top wall 42. The height 19 of the footrest 40 is significantly less than depth D of the bathtub in that area.
21 Alternatively, the footrest 40 may be formed on -~165606 1 the end wall 26 rather than being confined to the 2 side wall 22. In a further variant, the footrest 40 3 may extend both over the side wall 22 and the end 4 wall 26.
The above description of the invention should not 6 be considered in a limitative manner as refinements 7 and modifications can be made without departing from 8 spirit of the invention. The scope of protection is 9 defined in the annexed claims and their equivalents.
