Abstract

A method of completing multi-lateral wells and maintaining selective re-entry into laterals is presented. In accordance with the present invention, a first lateral well (16) is drilled from a primary well bore and a string of external casing packers (22) and a packer bore receptacle (26) are run therein. Once the orientation of the packer bore receptacle (26) is determined, an orientation anchor (28) of a retrievable whipstock assembly (50) is mounted thereto. Thereafter, a second lateral well (72) may be drilled. Once the second lateral well (72) is drilled, the whipstock assembly (50) may be retrieved and replaced with a scoophead/diverter assembly (91,92) which also includes an orientation anchor (99) for mating with the packer bore receptacle (26). At this time, a string of external casing packers (103) may be run into the second lateral well (72) through the scoophead (92) diverter (91) assembly. Finally, a selective re-entry tool (120) is run into the scoophead assembly (92). The selective re-entry tool (120) includes a diversion flapper (184) for selecting either the first (16) or second (72) lateral well bore. Selective re-entry is desirable for the purpose of perforating well intervention techniques. The re-entry tool (120) tray be actuated by a device located on a coil tubing work string which may be operated from the surface.
