Abstract

A fungicide for treating plants primarily products such as trees, wood and golf greens, comprises a solution in water of Carbendazim (trade mark) having a concentration greater than 7,000 ppm and preferably in the range 30,000 to 50,000 ppm. This is obtained by adding hydrochloric acid, by boiling the mixture and by adding a surfactant to maintain the active ingredientin solution.

Description

FUNGICIDE
BACKGROUND
This invention relates to a fungicide which is particularly but not exclusively designed for use on wood either in the condition of the living tree or subsequent to cutting.
Wood and trees are often damaged by fungus growth such as Dutch Elm Disease and other diseases which can kill trees in the live condition.Subsequent to cutting, fungus growth known as "sap stain" can cause deterioration of the wood product. Fungi can also cause significant problems in other plants such as on golf greens.
The active ingredient for a fungicide known as "Carbendazim"
(trade mark) is well known and manufactures by Hoechst of Frankfurt, Germany, and has been readily available for many years. This material for use as a fungicide must be dissolved in water in a manner which allows it to remain in solution while the water and active ingredient are applied to the wood, for example by injecting into the tree or by spraying onto cut lumber.
Up until now it has not been possible to generate a solution in water of the active ingredient which has a concentration of the active in~qredient greater than 7,000 parts per million (ppm) without the active ingredient coming out of solution and thus becoming valueless in the action upon the fungus within the tree or upon the lumber.
The present inventor has developed a technique for increasing the concel~L~d~ion of the active ingredient within a solution so that the concentration can be increased from the conventional maximum of 7,000 ppm and preferably of the order of 50,000 ppm.
SUMMARY
According to the invention, therefore, there is provided a fungicide co",~ri~i"g a solution in water of Carbenda~im in conce"~rdliol, greater than - 2 ?139825 7,000 parts per million (ppm) hydrochloric acid in the range 0.5% to 1.5% by volume a surfactant in the range 0.005% to 1.5% by volume.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a fun, qicide cûlllpri~illg a solution of Carbendazim in t, 5 water havin~q a conGe"~ldLio,1 of the Carbendazim greater than 7,000 ppm, the method comprising adding Cal bel~da~ l and hydrochloric acid to water, the amount of hydrochloric acid Iying in the range 0.5% to 1.5% by volume, boiling the mixture for a time period ~reater than one hour and subsequently adding a surfactant.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The process of the present invention is effected by applying the active ingredient of Cdl bel~dd~i, " and hy.i, u.,l ,lo, ic acid to the water in the required col1cer",dLion of the Carbendazim and including the hydrochloric acid in the ran~qe 0.5 to 1.5% and preferably 0.9%. The mixture is then boiled for a time period ~reater than one hour and preferably of the order of 1.5 hours at a simmer or low boil. The mixture is then gradually cooled and surfactant can be of the type sold by Esso under the trade mark "Igepal" and more pl~r~ldbly "Igepal 630".
The amount of the surfactant can lie in the range 0.005% to 1.5%
by volume.
This technique has been found to surprisingly allow the concentration of the active in~qredient, Carbendazim in the solution to be increased from the conventional maximum of the order of 7,000 ppm up to a number greater than that of the conventional maximum. The concentration preferably lies in the range 30,000 to 70,000 ppm and preferably over 50,000 ppm. This conce"L,~Lion provides an action on the lumber or on the wood of the re sufficient to kill the fungus. At the same time the costs involved in 3 2I3982~
manufacturing the mixture are sufficiently low to allow economic treatment of the products.
Since various ~ .liri~,dliUns can be made in my invention as herein above described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same 5 made within the spirit and scope of the claims without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limitin~ sense.
