Abstract
A combination container cap and hook for releasably securing to a container holding weighting means to produce an economical and safe weight for use in holding objects such as tarpaulins down over wood piles, boats and the like.

BOTTLE CAP WITH HOOR FOR MAKING DETACHABLE WEIGHT
The present invention relates to a bottle cap and hook combination for releasably securing to a container, to convert that container to a practical weight for holding tarpaulins and the like in place and for many other uses.
BACRGROUND OF THE lNV~:N~ION
Practical means for holding a tarpaulin or the like in position over an object such as a boat, wood pile, truck-trailer and the like, are generally cumbersome and awkward. Often ropes are used to strap the tarpaulin in place about the object. Other times ropes are secured to weights and passed through grommets spaced about the periphery of the tarpaulin. As well with ropes, creases become formed in the tarpaulin under the ropes, where water and snow can collect, potentially causing problems of increased weight on the object being covered and inconvenience when the tarpaulin has to be removed. U.S. Patent No. 5,168,605, teaches a complex system of ropes hooks and cleats for securing a tarpaulin.
Such approaches are both time consuming to put into effect, and produce an unsightly appearance.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an economical and easy to operate weight system for use for example, in holding tarpaulins and the like down over objects.

In accordance with the present invention there is provided, an improvement in a cap for closing an open top of a container, the cap comprising an upper surface and means for releasably securing the cap to the container to close its top. The improvement is characterized in that a hook is secured to the upper surface of the cap so as to upwardly extend from that surface.
Another aspect of the present invention is the combination of such a container with the cap and hook, the container to contain weighting means and the hook for example to be releasably secured to an aperture in a peripheral portion of an object such as a tarpaulin when the container contains the weighting means.
It is preferred that the hook be of a hook clip type, and that the cap and hook be of integral construction. In its simplest embodiment, the container is a plastic pop bottle, which for example may be filled with water or sand, and to which a suitable cap with hook is threadably engaged to its top opening.
The weight system according to the present invention is both attractive, economical and safe. By the use of a hook clip on the cap, unpurposeful disengagement of the weight from apertures about the periphery of the tarpaulin is avoided. At the same time, the attaching and detaching of the weights from the apertures is extremely simple to carry out.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a boat having a covering tarpaulin weighted using a weight system according to the present invention.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of one of the weights in accordance with the present invention releasably secured to an aperture in the periphery of the tarpaulin of Figure 1.
FIGURE 3 is an exploded perspective view of the top of a container and a cap and hook of Figure 1.
FIGURE 4 is a section view of an alternative embodiment of cap and hook in accordance with the present invention.
While the invention will be described in conjunction with illustrated embodiments, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the invention to such embodiments. On the contrary, it is intended to cover all alternatives, modifications and equivalents as may be included within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, similar features have been given similar reference numerals.
Turning to FIGURE 1 there is illustrated a series of _ weights 2 hanging directly or by ropes from peripheral grommet apertures 4 in a tarpaulin 6, to hold tarpaulin 6 down over a boat and trailer 8. As can be seen in more detail in Figure 2, weights 2 comprise a container 10 in the form of a plastic pop bottle which has been filled with a weighting material such as water or sand 12.
Releasably secured to the top of container 10 is a cap 14 of conventional construction, having an upper, circular surface 16 and a downwardly depending skirt 18 on the inside of which are threads 19 to releasably engage corresponding threads 20 about the upper opening 22 of container 10. Upwardly extending from a central position on upper surface 16 of cap 14 is a hook 24 (preferably a hook clip as illustrated). It is preferred that the cap and hook be of rugged, integral construction from a material such as plastic, as in Figure 3. An alternative embodiment (Figure 4) however is to have the hook non-integral with the cap and for example of other material, such as metal, and secured to upper surface 16 of cap 14 by means of appropriate securing means such as a rivet, nut and bolt arrangement, screw means or the like. In the illustrated embodiment of Figure 4, the hook 24 is secured on the cap by means of a rivet 26.
Having a plurality of caps 14 of the construction of Figures 3 or 4, and a plurality of empty plastic pop bottles 10, a system of weights 2 can be readily set up by filling, or partly filling, the containers with water, sand or other weighting material, threading caps 14 on openings 22 of those pop bottles 10, and clipping each hook 24 through an aperture 4 in tarpaulin 6 so that the weights are appropriately spaced about the periphery of 2~79~8 tarpaulin 6, when that tarpaulin has been laid in position over the object to be covered. The use of such weights according to the present invention on tarpaulins avoids the need for ropes and the inherent problems of creases caused by ropes.
While the cap 14/hook 24 combination of the present invention in the context of its functioning in conjunction with a container 10 is as a weight, it is envisaged that this combination of cap/hook and container will have other uses as well, which uses are intended to be covered hereby.
Thus it is apparent that there has been provided in accordance with the invention a bottle cap with hook for making a detachable weight that fully satisfies the objects, aims and advantages set forth above. While the invention has been described in conjunction with specific embodiments thereof, it is evident lS that many alternatives, modifications and variations will be apparent to those skilled in the art in light of the foregoing description. For example, while in the illustrated embodiments, the caps are provided with threads for engagement over the openings of containers, other conventional engagement means for the caps and containers may be provided. Accordingly, it is intended to embrace all such alternatives, modifications and variations as fall within the spirit and broad scope of the invention.
BOTTLE CAP WITH HOOR FOR MAKING DETACHABLE WEIGHT
The present invention relates to a bottle cap and hook combination for releasably securing to a container, to convert that container to a practical weight for holding tarpaulins and the like in place and for many other uses.
BACRGROUND OF THE lNV~:N~ION
Practical means for holding a tarpaulin or the like in position over an object such as a boat, wood pile, truck-trailer and the like, are generally cumbersome and awkward. Often ropes are used to strap the tarpaulin in place about the object. Other times ropes are secured to weights and passed through grommets spaced about the periphery of the tarpaulin. As well with ropes, creases become formed in the tarpaulin under the ropes, where water and snow can collect, potentially causing problems of increased weight on the object being covered and inconvenience when the tarpaulin has to be removed. U.S. Patent No. 5,168,605, teaches a complex system of ropes hooks and cleats for securing a tarpaulin.
Such approaches are both time consuming to put into effect, and produce an unsightly appearance.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an economical and easy to operate weight system for use for example, in holding tarpaulins and the like down over objects.

In accordance with the present invention there is provided, an improvement in a cap for closing an open top of a container, the cap comprising an upper surface and means for releasably securing the cap to the container to close its top. The improvement is characterized in that a hook is secured to the upper surface of the cap so as to upwardly extend from that surface.
Another aspect of the present invention is the combination of such a container with the cap and hook, the container to contain weighting means and the hook for example to be releasably secured to an aperture in a peripheral portion of an object such as a tarpaulin when the container contains the weighting means.
It is preferred that the hook be of a hook clip type, and that the cap and hook be of integral construction. In its simplest embodiment, the container is a plastic pop bottle, which for example may be filled with water or sand, and to which a suitable cap with hook is threadably engaged to its top opening.
The weight system according to the present invention is both attractive, economical and safe. By the use of a hook clip on the cap, unpurposeful disengagement of the weight from apertures about the periphery of the tarpaulin is avoided. At the same time, the attaching and detaching of the weights from the apertures is extremely simple to carry out.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a boat having a covering tarpaulin weighted using a weight system according to the present invention.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of one of the weights in accordance with the present invention releasably secured to an aperture in the periphery of the tarpaulin of Figure 1.
FIGURE 3 is an exploded perspective view of the top of a container and a cap and hook of Figure 1.
FIGURE 4 is a section view of an alternative embodiment of cap and hook in accordance with the present invention.
While the invention will be described in conjunction with illustrated embodiments, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the invention to such embodiments. On the contrary, it is intended to cover all alternatives, modifications and equivalents as may be included within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, similar features have been given similar reference numerals.
Turning to FIGURE 1 there is illustrated a series of _ weights 2 hanging directly or by ropes from peripheral grommet apertures 4 in a tarpaulin 6, to hold tarpaulin 6 down over a boat and trailer 8. As can be seen in more detail in Figure 2, weights 2 comprise a container 10 in the form of a plastic pop bottle which has been filled with a weighting material such as water or sand 12.
Releasably secured to the top of container 10 is a cap 14 of conventional construction, having an upper, circular surface 16 and a downwardly depending skirt 18 on the inside of which are threads 19 to releasably engage corresponding threads 20 about the upper opening 22 of container 10. Upwardly extending from a central position on upper surface 16 of cap 14 is a hook 24 (preferably a hook clip as illustrated). It is preferred that the cap and hook be of rugged, integral construction from a material such as plastic, as in Figure 3. An alternative embodiment (Figure 4) however is to have the hook non-integral with the cap and for example of other material, such as metal, and secured to upper surface 16 of cap 14 by means of appropriate securing means such as a rivet, nut and bolt arrangement, screw means or the like. In the illustrated embodiment of Figure 4, the hook 24 is secured on the cap by means of a rivet 26.
Having a plurality of caps 14 of the construction of Figures 3 or 4, and a plurality of empty plastic pop bottles 10, a system of weights 2 can be readily set up by filling, or partly filling, the containers with water, sand or other weighting material, threading caps 14 on openings 22 of those pop bottles 10, and clipping each hook 24 through an aperture 4 in tarpaulin 6 so that the weights are appropriately spaced about the periphery of 2~79~8 tarpaulin 6, when that tarpaulin has been laid in position over the object to be covered. The use of such weights according to the present invention on tarpaulins avoids the need for ropes and the inherent problems of creases caused by ropes.
While the cap 14/hook 24 combination of the present invention in the context of its functioning in conjunction with a container 10 is as a weight, it is envisaged that this combination of cap/hook and container will have other uses as well, which uses are intended to be covered hereby.
Thus it is apparent that there has been provided in accordance with the invention a bottle cap with hook for making a detachable weight that fully satisfies the objects, aims and advantages set forth above. While the invention has been described in conjunction with specific embodiments thereof, it is evident lS that many alternatives, modifications and variations will be apparent to those skilled in the art in light of the foregoing description. For example, while in the illustrated embodiments, the caps are provided with threads for engagement over the openings of containers, other conventional engagement means for the caps and containers may be provided. Accordingly, it is intended to embrace all such alternatives, modifications and variations as fall within the spirit and broad scope of the invention.
Claims (17)
1. In a cap for closing an open top of a container to contain a weighting means, the cap comprising an upper surface and means for releasably securing the cap to the container to close its top, the improvement characterized in that a hook is secured to the upper surface of the cap so as to upwardly extend from that surface.
2. A cap according to claim 1 wherein the hook is centrally positioned on the upper surface.
3. A cap according to claim 1 wherein the cap is of the type having an upper circular surface circumscribed by a downwardly depending skirt, an inner surface of the skirt being provided with thread means adapted to engage corresponding thread means about an opening at the top of a container.
4. A cap according to claim 3 wherein the cap is of a type to threadably engage the top of a plastic pop bottle.
5. A cap according to claim 4 wherein the hook is secured to the cap by fastening means selected from the group comprising rivet means, screw means and nut and bolt means.
6. A cap according to claim 4 wherein the cap and hook are of integral plastic construction.
7. A cap according to claim 1 wherein the hook comprises a hook clip type.
8. A cap according to claim 5 wherein the hook comprises a hook clip type.
9. A cap according to claim 6 wherein the hook comprises a hook clip type.
10. A container having an open top, the container to contain weighting means, in combination with a cap, the cap comprising an upper surfacer and means for releasably securing the cap to the container to close its top, a hook being secured to the upper surface of the cap so as to upwardly extend from that surface, the hook to be releasably secured to an aperture in a peripheral portion of an object when the container contains the weighting means.
11. A container and cap according to claim 10, the container containing weighting means.
12. The container and cap of claim 10 wherein the cap is of the type having an upper circular surface circumscribed by a skirt, an inner surface of the skirt being provided with thread means adapted to engage corresponding thread means about the opening at the top of the container.
13. The container and cap according to claim 12 wherein the container is a plastic pop bottle.
14. The container and cap according to claim 13 wherein the cap and hook are of integral plastic construction.
15. The container and cap of claim 14 wherein the hook comprises a hook clip.
16. The container and cap according to claim 13 wherein the weighting means is water.
17. The container and cap of claim 13 wherein the weighting means is sand.
