Abstract
A hand held pill bottle opener for lift top pill bottles comprised of an rigid elongated lever member and an end including a tongue disposed in the end. The tongue disposed within said end of the lever member is positioned normal-to-parallel to the end extending from beneath the end and terminates in a fork which can be positioned flush against the thumb rest of the lid of a pill bottle and the tines of the fork rest snugly against either side of the thumb rest of the lid of the pill bottle and the end of the lever member is resting on top of the lid of the pill bottle. If an upward force is then applied to the lever member the end of the lever member and the tongue firmly grasp the lid of the pill bottle by the thumb rest and the top of the lid to easily force the lid off the pill bottle.
Description
_ PILL BOTTLE OPENER
The present invention relates to a hand held pill bottle opener for lift top pill bottles.
Various types of hand held bottle openers are known. One type in particular has been made for lift top pop bottles and comprises an elongated lever member and an end with a tang disposed within the end of the lever member which is adapted to fit under the edge of the lid of the pop bottle while the end of the lever member rests on top of the lid. When an upward pressure is applied to the lever member the tang pulls upward on the lid while the end of the lever member holds the bottle opener in place. This type has the disadvantage of inadequacy in the design of the tang which cannot be applied under the lid of a pill bottle since there is no gap between the lid and the bottle.
The only point upon which pressure can be applied to the lid of a pill bottle is the thumb rest which the lid manufacturers have designed as the point upon which upward pressure is to be applied in order to remove the lid of the pill bottle. The lid of the pill bottle fits snugly over top of the bottle so as to make it difficult to remove the lid. This is a safety feature of the lid and the pill bottle.
It is desirable to have a lift-top bottle opener which is adapted to the safety lids of pill bottles and is easy to use, small enough to carry in a pocket or a purse, and inexpensive to manufacture.
The present invention is comprised of an elongated lever member and an end including a tongue disposed in the end.
The elongated lever member is comprised of a flat member which spans the entire length of the lever member and which is rigid to prevent flexure at any point along the lever member.
The end of said elongated lever member is comprised of a flat member which extends from the lever member and is adapted to be engaged over the top of a bottle cap.
The tongue disposed within said end of the lever member is positioned normal-to-parallel to the end extending from beneath the flat member of said end in a direction away from said elongated lever member along the length of the end of the lever member but not extending past the length of the end of the lever member and not aligned with the end of the lever member.
The tongue terminates in a fork in which the back of the fork is squared and the bends between the back and the tines are angular and normal from the back wherein the squared back can be positioned flush against the thumb rest of the lid of the pill ~: 213098S
bottle and the tines of the fork rest snugly against either side of the thumb rest of the lid of the pill bottle and the end of the lever member is resting on top of the lid of the pill bottle such that- if an upward force is applied to the lever member the end of the lever member and the tongue firmly grasp the lid of the pill bottle by the thumb rest and the top of the lid to easily force the lid off the pill bottle.
The invention, as exemplified by a preferred embodiment, is described with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pill bottle opener;
and Figure 2 is a side view of the pill bottle opener shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a perspective view tongue of the pill bottle opener shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the pill bottle opener 10, is comprised of an elongated lever member 12 and an end 14 including a tongue 16 disposed in the end.
The tongue disposed within said end of the lever member is bent normal-to-parallel from beneath the flat member. The bends 18, 20 may be arcuate though they are shown in the figures to be angular.
The tongue terminates in a fork 22, in which the back of the fork, 23, is squared and the bends 28, 30 between the back and the tines 24, 26 may be arcuate though they are shown in the figures to be angular, and are normal to the back.
The purpose of the pill bottle opener is to allow the elderly and the weak or disabled to remove the lids from pill bottles which have lift-top safety lids.
The pill bottle opener is used by placing the lever in the palm of the hand with the thumb positioned near the end of the lever member close to the tongue, which is facing downward.
Align the tongue with the thumb rest of the lid of the pill bottle. The tines of the tongue should straddle either side of the thumb rest while the back of the fork should be flush against the front of the thumb rest. Apply upward pressure to the lever member and the lid should lift easily off the pill bottle.
The Pill Bottle Opener is preferably made of metal, which is a rigid material that resists flexure along the lever member.
Although only a single embodiment of the present invention 21~0g~5 has been described and illustrated, the present invention is not limited to the features of this embodiment, but includes all variations and modifications within the scope of the claims.
