Description
A1K1 1~1 PAINT APPLICATOR CCVER
Field of the Invention The invention relates to the field of painting utensils and in particular to devices for re-usable airtight sealing of paint rollers, paint brushes and the like so that such paint applicators may be left after use for subsequent use without the need for thorough cleaning between uses.
Background of the Invention It is known in the prior art that it is desirable to provide airtight re-sealable containers to hold paint and paint wetted paint rollers so that in between uses, the paint roller does not have to be cleaned. Sealing inhibits drying out of the paint roller which would render the paint roller unusable.
In particular Applicant is aware of United States Patent No. 5,316,137 which issued Kyllonen on May 31, 1994 for a Paint Saver Tray. Kyllonen and similarly United States Patent No. 4,541,542 which issued to Florentino on September 17, 1985 for a Paint Tray Cover, and United States Patent No. 4,547,926 which issued to Kern on October 22, 1985 for a Roller Tray With Cover, teach conventional paint roller trays having various airtight re-sealable covers for mounting thereon.
Applicant notes that in the Kyllonen, Florentino and Kern prior art devices, it is assumed in those references that a painter would wish to store the paint roller in the paint roller tray, i.e. in the tray in which the paint is normally held during use. Thus provision in the prior art is only made for a single paint roller to be held within the re-sealable paint tray, or in the case of the Kern device, a single paint roller alongside a paint brush.
2l2767a -` -It has been found that it is often desirable to store a paint roller or a paint brush in a paint wetted condition separate and apart from the paint tray. For example it is sometimes the case that more than one painter is operating out of a single paint tray or that a single painter is using more than one paint roller, for example paint rollers of different sizes, out of a single tray. Consequently, it is an object of the present invention to provide a re-usable airtight paint wetted area cover for reusable airtight covering of paint applicators such as paint rollers and paint brushes and in particular a cover which may be easily and removably installed over paint rollers and paint brushes so as to leave exposed the paint utensil handle. The cover of the present invention is not large and bulky like a conventional paint tray but, rather, snugly fits around the paint wetted area of the painting utensil making for ease of storage of the painting utensil.
Summary of the Invention A re-sealable airtight paint applicator cover for re-sealable airtight csnt~;n~ent of a paint-wetted area on a paint applicator has first and second clam shell members, the first clam shell member for snug removable airtight engagement with said second clam shell member so as to form a paint applicator wetted end cont~;nment cavity therebetween. The cavity is adapted to receive therein the paint wetted area of the applica-tor, an aperture in the re-sealable airtight paint applicator cover for re-sealable airtight mating around a handle of the paint applicator. In operation, the paint applicator wetted area may be placed between the first and second clam shell members and the first and second clam shell members removably and re-sealably mounted together so that the paint applicator wetted area is contained within the cavity and the cavity is airtight. The paint applicator handle extends from the aperture in the re-sealable airtight paint applicator cover.
Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a partial cut-away plan view of the airtight paint applicator cover of the present invention in its closed position.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the airtight paint applica-tor cover of the present invention in its open position.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a re-sealable airtight paint roller cover 10 which may be made of molded plastic or of disposable polystyrene materials such as often found in the manufacture of egg cartons. Paint roller 12 is held between upper and lower clam shell halves 14. Clam shell halves 14 may be hinged such as by a molded hinge, along hinge line 16. With clam shell halves 14 folded over onto one another along hinge line 16, so as to enclose paint roller 12 within paint roller cover 10, an airtight seal is formed between clam shell halves 14, that is, along hinge line 16, around airtight mating edges 18, and around paint roller handle 20 by paint roller handle seal 22.
212767~
Paint roller handle seal 22 may be of a resilient material such as rubber, implemented such as by the split rubber grommet illustrated in Figure 3, which may be fitted around paint roller handle 20 when it is desired to mount paint roller cover 10 over roller 12. Alternatively, semi-circular rubber seals or seals of like resilient material may be mounted around the edges of semi-circular cut-outs 24 on clam shell halves 14. If paint roller cover 10 is made of polystyrene or the like, then seal 22 may be formed as an integral part of semi-circular cutouts 24.
Clasp mechanism 26 such as illustrated in detail in Figure 4, having clasp prong 26a and mating clasp prong recep-tacle 26b may be mounted to or form part of clam shell halves 14 on edges 18.
In one embodiment, edges 18 matingly engage as illustrated in Figure 5 by the snug mating of upper edges 18a within ch~nn~l 28 around circumference of lower edge 18b. In an alternative embodiment, as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, paint brush cover 30 has clam shell halves 32, hinged about hinge line 34 for re-usable airtight sealing of paint wetted area 36 of paint brush 38. Clam shell halves 32 are held closed by clasp 40 in a manner similar, for example, to that of clasp 26 on paint roller cover 10. Handle seals 42 are provided within, for example, semi-circular cutouts 44 in a manner similar to handle seal 22 and semi-circular cutouts 24 on paint roller cover 10.
As with paint roller cover 10, paint brush cover 30 allows for paint brush handle 46 to protrude from paint brush cover 30, paint brush cover 30 providing an airtight cover over paint wetted area 36.
As will be apparent to those skilled in the art in the light of the foregoing disclosure, many alterations and modifica-tions are possible in the practice of this invention without departing from the spirit or scope thereof. Accordingly, the 212767~
scope of the invention is to be construed in accordance with the substance defined by the following claims.
