Abstract

This invention is an eyewear frame which is formed with cannula grooves for receiving and accommodating an oxygen nasal cannula and which has plates for covering the cannula grooves so that, during use, the oxygen nasal cannula grooves are not visible.
Preferably, the plates are interlocking plates mountable onto the main member of the eyewear frame.

Description

_ 21 257 90 This invention relates to an embodiment or apparatus which supplies oxygen into the nasal passage of the human nose.
Oxygen dependent patients are dependent on oxygen for survival. Therefore, they wear an oxygen nasal cannula which is inserted into the nasal passage of the human nose (e.g. the oxygen nasal cannula is positioned on the face by putting the cannula over the head and inserting the nose piece of the cannula into the nostrils. The cannula tubing is then passed over the ears and can be adjusted under the chin by an adjustable sleeve.) This cannula is totally exposed and visible to the human eye. The oxygen is administered by an oxygen nasal cannula which is connected to an oxygen medical tubing which is then connected to an oxygen tank. The oxygen tank contains liquid oxygen or a compressed gas (oxygen) and once turn on regulates prescribed amounts of oxygen to enter the nasal passage and flow onward into the patient's lungs. This then allows the patient to receive a prescribed amount of oxygen to breathe and survive.
An apparatus of this type is inconvenient because of the unnatural feeling of having an oxygen nasal cannula hang and lay across the face of the oxygen dependent patient. It is, also unnatural and inconvenient because of the total visibility of the oxygen nasal cannula on the patient's face, which makes them feel self conscious and medically disabled. The difficulties of this apparatus are snagging, twisting and tangling of the oxyy~en nasal cannula.

The inventors found that these disadvantages may be overcome by providing an apparatus which is designed to totally hide the oxygen nasal cannula within the eyewear frame. It eliminates the unnatural feeling of having the cannula hang and lay over the ears and the side of the face. This new apparatus also allows total non-visibility of the oxygen nasal cannula on the patient's face, enabling them to feel natural and self confident.
According to this invention, there is provided an eyewear frame comprising: a face member; a left arm and a right arm hingedly mounted to the face member to permit wearing of the eyewear frame by the user; there being a left arm cannula groove formed in said left arm for receiving and accommodating an oxygen nasal cannula therein; there being a right arm cannula groove formed in said right arm for receiving and accommodating an oxygen nasal cannula therein; said face member having a front and a back, there being a left face member cannula groove and a right face member cannula groove formed in said face member at said back; said left face cannula groove being formed to receive and accommodate an oxygen nasal cannula already mounted within said left arm cannula groove and extending to a left delivery opening which, in use, permits the oxygen nasal cannula to be extended into the user's left nostril; said right face cannula groove being formed to receive and accommodate an oxygen nasal cannula already mounted within said right arm cannula groove and extending to a right delivery opening which, in use, permits the oxygen nasal cannula to be extended into the user's right nostril;
there being a face plate means mountable to the back of the face member to cover the left face member cannula groove and the right face member cannula groove during use; there being a right arm plate means mountable to the right arm to cover the left arm cannula groove during use; there being a left arm plate means mountable to the left arm to cover the left arm cannula groove during use.
The invention will be readily understood after reading the following description of the preferred embodiment in combination with the drawings of the preferred embodiment in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective ivew of the eyewear frame with an oxygen nasal cannula inserted;
Figure 2 is a front view of the eyewear frame with an oxygen nasal cannula inserted;
Figure 3 is a back view of the eyewear frame with an oxygen nasal cannula inserted;
Figure 4 is a sectional view of a portion of the back of the face member, showing the interlocking mechanism used to secure the face plate which covers the cannula groove during use;
Figure 5 is a sectional view of a portion of the arm of the eyewear frame showing an arm clip securement means for securing the arm plate to the arm of the eyewear frame;
Figure 6 is an illustration of the arm of the eyewear frame and the arm plate mountable thereon;
Figure 7 is a back view of the eyewear frame showing its component parts and an oxygen cannula tube mounted in the left arm cannula groove and left face member cannula groove.
Refernng to the drawings, the components of the eyewear frame include the eyewear face 1, two face plates 2, two arms 3, two arm plates 4 and two arm clips 5.
Mountable onto the eyewear frame is an oxygennasal cannula 23 and a cannula swivel clip 28.
The eyewear frame is dissasembled by removing the face plates 2. Each face plate is removed by placing one's thumb or thumb nail into the face thumb slit 8 (see Figure 3 or Figure 7). Upon doing that, one would feel the top edge of the face plate 2 and can pull or pry back the face plate 2, breaking the seal and allowing the face plate 2 to be partially pulled out of the face recession 20 of the eyewear frames. This face plate 2 is very flexible and bends easily because it can be made of a very flexible plastic or rubber substance, thereby allowing the face plate 2 to bend without breaking. After the face plate 2 has been partially pulled out (about '/ way), it can then be pulled straight up and out, allowing the two male face plate connectors 12 to easily pull out of the two female face plate connectors 13 (see Figure 7). The plate is thereby removed.
After both face plates 2 have been removed from the face 1, the arm plates 4 can be removed from the arms of the eyewear frame. To remove each arm plate 4, the arm clip S is first removed by placing a fingertip under the inside of the arm clip S which slightly protrudes below the arm 3 (See Figure 3). One will then be able to catch the edge of the arm clip 5 with one's fingertip, slightly pull the arm clip 5 out of the female arm clip connector 7 and push up thereby removing the arm clip 5 from the arm 3 (see Figure 5, 6 or 7). The arm clip 5 can be made of metal or plastic as long as it is resilient enough to bend and spring back into shape. The next step for removal involves inserting the tip of one's thumb or thumb nail into the arm thumb slit 9 (see Figure 5, 6 or 7).
Upon doing that, one should then feel the top edge of the arm plate 4 and can pull or pry back the arm plate 4 allowing it to be partially pulled out of the arm recession 21 (see Figure S, 6 or 7).
This arm plate 4 is very flexible and bends easily because it is to be made of a suitably resilient plastic or rubber substance to allow bending without breaking. One the arm plate 4 is partially pulled out, one can then pull it straight up and out and one can then easily pull the arm plate connector 14 out of the female arm plate connector 15. Each arm plate 4 is thereby removed from the arm 3 of the eyewear frame.
After the two arm plates 4 have been removed from both the arms 3, and the two face plates 2 have been removed from the face 1 of the eyewear frame, the oxygen nasal cannula 2 3 is ready for insertion. The oxygen nasal cannula 23 is inserted into the eyewear frame by feeding one of the two annula tips 29 into the hole of the arm 17 located nearest to the ear (see Figure I , 2, 3, 6 or 7). It is then fed far enough through the hole 17 so that the cannula 23 tubing may be then fed through the next hole in the arm 16 hearest the hinge (see Figure 5, 6, or 7).
The moulded curve 24 of the cannula 23 can be straightened as it is being fed through the holes 16, 17, 18 and 19 and will spring back to its original shape due to resilience. The cannula 23 is conninually fed through to the first hole in the face 18 nearest the hinge (see Figure 4) and then fed through to the second or last hole in the face 19 Nearest the nasal passage (see Figure 1, 2, 3 or 7). Each cannula tip 29 can be fed through the eyewear frame in this manner.
After the cannula 23 has been fed through the holes 16, 17, 18 and 19 in the eyewear frame, the cannula 23 may still be loose and have slack, and may not be completely inserted or snapped into the cannula grooves 10, 11. The oxygen nasal cannula 23 is then adjusted by placing the eyewear fram on one's face and inserting both cannula tips 29 into the nostrils. With su~cient slack, the ends of the cannula 23 are adjusted by sliding the cannula 23 up or down to fit one's nose comfortably and snug.
The molded curve 24 should fit snug around the curvature of the nose. The tapering end 27 or cannula tip 29 has been speically designed to be sipped or cut with scissors as needed, for a suitable fit. After the cannula 23 has been adjusted, the eyewear frame is carefully removed from the user's face. Using one's fingers, the loose oxygen nasal cannula 23 is placed and snapped into the cannula grooves 10 and I 1 of the face I and arms 3. .At the same time, the slack is taken up by puling or tugging on the cannula 23 near the hole in the arm 17 nearest the ear. This procedure is repeated for each side of the eyewear frame.
After adjustment, the frame can be reassembled into one complete unit. To re-insert a face plates 2, the two male face plate connectors I2 are placed into the two female pface plate connectors 13 and the face plate 2 is snapped into the face recession 20. (see Figure 4 or Figure 7). This procedure is repeated for each of the two face plates 2.
To re-insert the arm plates 4, each male arm plate connector 14 is placed into the corresponding female arm plate connector I S and the arrn plate 4 is snapped into the arm recession 21 (See Figure 6 or Figure 7). The arm clip S is slid down over the arm 3 and arm plate 4 until the arm clip 5 snaps securely into place. As shown in the drawings, there are two male arm clip connectors 6 and two female arm clip connectors 7 which keep the arm clip 5 in place (see Figure 5, 6 or 7). This procedure is repeated for each re-inserting each of the two arm plates 4 into the eyewear frame.
In result, this invention provides an eyewear frame for an oxygen nasal cannula 23 which can be mounted and totally hidden therein, resulting in a complete single unit. The eyewear frame can be placed on one's face with the cannula tubing being allowed to lay loosely behind the head and back of the user. The cannula swivel clip 28 can be attached to the oxyy~en nasal cannula 23 tubing and the cannula swivel clip 28 can be attached to an article or piece of clothing, preferably around waist level of the user. After doing so, the oxygen nasal cannula 2 3 tubing can be directly attached to the oxygen tank.
In use, once the oxygen tank is turned on to the patient's prescription, the prescribed amount of oxygen will flow from the tank, through the oxygen nasal cannula 23 tubing totally concealed within the eyewear frame. The oxygen dependent patient may now receive the oxygen that is required without feeling self conscious or medically disabled..
It will be readily apparent that this invention can be used both for prescription eyewear and non-prescription eyewear and that numerous variations in style, shape and design are possible without deviating from the scope of this invention. The embodiment illustrated is the preferred embodiment only and the specification is not to be read in a limiting sense. The scope of the invention is as defined in the appended claims.

Claims (4)

1. An eyewear frame comprising:
a face member;
a left arm and a right arm hingedly mounted to the face member to permit wearing of the eyewear frame by the user;
there being a left arm cannula groove formed in said left arm for receiving and accommodating an oxygen nasal cannula therein there being a right arm cannula groove formed in said right arm for receiving and accommodating an oxygen nasal cannula therein said face member having a front and a back, there being a left face member cannula groove and a right face member cannula groove formed in said face member at said back, said left face cannula groove being formed to receive and accommodate an oxygen nasal cannula already mounted within said left arm cannula groove and extending to a left delivery opening which, in use, permits the oxygen nasal cannula to be extended into the user's left nostril;
said right face cannula groove being formed to receive and accommodate an oxygen nasal cannula already mounted within said right arm cannula groove and extending to a right delivery opening which, in use, permits the oxygen nasal cannula to be extended into the user's right nostril;

there being a face plate means mountable to the back of the face member to cover the left face member cannula groove and the right face member cannula groove during use;
there being a right arm plate means mountable to the right arm to cover the left arm cannula groove during use.
there being a left arm plate means mountable to the left arm to cover the left arm cannula groove during use.
2. An eyewear frame as claimed in claim 1 wherein said face plate means comprises a left face plate mountable interlockedly to the face member to cover the left face member cannula groove and a right face plate mountable interlockedly to the face member to cover the right face member cannula groove.
3. An eyewear frame as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the right arm plate means comprises a right arm plate mountable interlockedly to the right arm to cover the right arm cannula groove and the left arm plate means comprises a left arm plate mountable interlockedly to the left arm to cover the left arm cannula groove.
4. An eyewear frame as claimed in claim 1, claim 2 or claim 3 wherein there is provided a clip means for securing the right arm plate to the right arm and for securing the left arm plate to the left arm.
