Abstract

On VOLVO station wagons, series 700, 800, 900, the tailgate panel can break around four upper clip holes, making the clip hole larger than a matching clip, so panel can not be properly secured to the tailgate. The invention - Volvo wagon tailgate panel repair bracket - eliminates need for expensive panel replacement.
The metal bracket is shaped to fit over the damaged hole in the panel. It is made of galvanized sheet metal and secured to the panel by two short self tapping screws. The hole in the bracket is of the same size and shape as the original hole in the panel;
it is located right over the damaged hole in the panel.
Original clips sticking out from the tailgate now fit snug and panel can be properly reinstalled and easily removed if the need be.
Four brackets (panel has four upper clip holes), eight self tapping screws and instructions sheet make the Volvo wagon tailgate panel repair kit. It will be offered to garages servicing Volvo cars.
The inventor tested the invention on more then twenty cars over the one year time and is convinced in its usefulness.

Description

The invention relates to repair of broken tailgate panel on Volvo automobiles - station wagons series 700, 800 and 900, model years from 1985 and up.
The tailgate inside trim panel on these vehicles is made of plastic and is secured on its upper portion by four plastic clips.
Due to the weight of the panel and frequent use of tailgate the panel cracks and breaks around the holes. Clip holes become larger than clips and panel can not be properly secured anymore.
Replacement of a broken panel is very expensive. The invention - repair brackets can permanently fix the broken panel and cost only around 5% of the price of a new panel. The bracket is installed on top of the broken portion of the panel and secured by two sheet metal self tapping screws size 6 x 3/8". See instalation instruction sheet enclosed. Hole in the bracket is in the same place where original hole was and is of the same size. Clips now fit again and panel is firmly secured to the tailgate. Repair brackets are very thin and there is no visible difference in trim fit.
The repair bracket is made of galvanized sheet metal. The thickness should be in between 0.2 and 0.3 mm. It is of an irregular shape 40 mm wide and 36 mm long. When installed, the sides fold 90 degrees and the screws are installed through two 3 mm pre-drilled holes. The oval hole in the center replaces (broken) hole in the panel.
Four brackets and eight screws make one panel repair kit;
panel has only four clip holes on its upper part.
The exact shape and measurements of the bracket are found on drawing #l as well as the positions and diameters of three holes in the bracket. The additional drawing illustrates the installation procedure.

Claims (2)

1. A bracket shaped to fit over a broken clip hole on a tailgate interior trim panel of any VOLVO station wagon series 700, 800 and 900 model years 1985 and newer. The brackets restore the function of a broken panel using the existing clips on the tailgate, as described in the specifications.
2. The Volvo station wagon tailgate panel repair kits that consist of brackets as defined in claim 1.
