Abstract
In a pivoting arm stapling device, it is known to have a pivot system applicable only to large staplers of a type no longer in use. In this invention, the pivot system enables the pivoting arm to be applied to any design of stapler currently in use.
Description
~,A 2 1 1 64 74 This invention relates to stapling devices, particularly the low profile desktop type that pivot, enabling the user to staple material either on a line parallel to the edge of the stapler or on a line perpendicular thereto.
Pivoting arm staplers heretofore have been cumbersome using a large plunger to drive the staple through the material.
The object of the present invention is to enable a pivoting arm to be utilized in a more compact, low pro~ile stapler.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent upon reading of the following description, when taken in conjunction with the drawings in which:
Fig.1 is a perspective view of a pivotal stapling device in the perpendicular stapling position with a cutaway showing the location of the pivot and pivot plate.
~ ig.2 is a perspective view of a pivotal stapling device in the parallel stapling position.
Fig.3 is a sectional view taken along line A in Fig.1.
Fig.4 is a view of the pivot plate and the portion of the staple carriage with which it comes in contact.
Referring to the drawings, ~ig.1 shows a stapler comprised of a base 1 having an anvil 2 with staple bending recesses 3, mounted at the forward end of base 1 and two tabs 4 integral to the back end of base 1. An arm 5 is pivotally mounted to the tabs 4 by means of rivets 6. Integral to the forward end of arm 5 is pivot plate 7.
- Staple carriage 8 is pivotally mounted to the staple driver arm 9 by rivets 10.
Pivot pin 11 is integral to pivot plate 7. Staple driver arm 9 is mounted to pivot plate 7 by means of pivot pin 11 passing through hole 16 at the forward end of arm 9 and held ` in place by washer 12 and spring-steel washer 13 enabling arm 9 to be rotated to any number of positions.
Staple driver arm 9 has a number of holes 15 to seat nubs 14 to keep members in position for stapling when staple driver arm 9 is parallel or perpendicular to base 1.
The staple driving mechanism and the means by which the staples are urged towards the driving mechanism are known in the art as are the means for staple loading.
The invention exemplifies features unknown in the art as they relate to the low profile stapler described above. I do not, howeverJ wish to be limited to the specific structure shown. Modifications may be made in the future that are within the spirit of my invention and the scope of my claims.
