Abstract

A method of packaging self adhesive note paper includes the following described steps. Firstly, place a perforation line on a plurality of single sheets of self adhesive note paper forming a pad. The perforations are positioned across an adhesive bearing portion parallel and immediately adjacent to a peripheral edge. Secondly, insert the pad of self adhesive note paper into a matchbook-like cover having a lower flap and an upper flap engagable with the lower flap.
Thirdly, place a staple through the matchbook-like cover including the lower flap and the pad intermediate the peripheral edge and they perforation line. The single sheets can be removed one at a time from the pad by tearing the single sheets along the perforation line.

The present invent;ion relates to a method of packaging self adhesive note paper.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Self adhesive note paper was first introduced into North America and sold by the 3M Company under the trade mark "Post-it" notes. Marketing of the Post-it notes at first posed a problem for the 3M Company as the public did not appreciate the usefulness of the product until given the opportunity to utilize the product. It is, therefore, critical to expanding the market for the product to put samples into the hands of as many persons as possible.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
What is required i_s a method of packaging self adhesive note paper that will b~e conducive to a wide distribution of the product.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of packaging self adhesive note paper, including the following described steps . Firstly, place a perforation line on a plurality of single sheets of self adhesive note paper forming a pad. The perforations are positioned across an adhesive bearing portion parallel and immediately adjacent to a peripheral edge. Secondly, insert the pad of self adhesive note paper into a matchbook-like cover having a lower flap and an upper flap engagable: with the lower flap. Thirdly, place a staple through the matchbook-like cover including the lower flap and the pad intermediate the peripheral edge and the perforation line. The single sheets can be removed one at a time from the pad by tearing the single sheets along the perforation line.

In the promotional advertising business the single: most popular promotional item is a book of matches. Books of matches containing promotional messages can be found in ashtrays at virtually every hotel and restaurant across North America. The habits of the populace, however, are changing.
Members of the public ~~re to in ever increasing proportions becoming non-smokers; sometimes militantly so. In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, self adhesive note paper can be packaged in the familiar matchbook cover format. This meets they needs of the promotional adveri~ising business and also serves to place self adhesive note paper into the hands of millions of new potential users.
Although benefici~~l results may be obtained from using the method, as described, when matches are placed within a matchbook cover there is no perforation line provided to facilitate the removal of matches. The matches must be torn adjacent an edge of the lower flap. If this were fo:Llowed with the present invention the space available for writing on the self adhesive note paper would be severely limited. Even more beneficial result.. may, therefore, be obtained when the lower flap extends i:rom the peripheral edge past the perforation line, such that the lower flap completely covers the perforation line.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a note pad which includes a matchbook-like cover with a lower flap and an upper flap engagable with the lower flap.
A plurality of single sheets of self adhesive note paper forming a pad are secured within the matchbook-like cover.
The pad has a perforation line across an adhesive bearing portion parallel and immediately adjacent to a peripheral edge.

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of some self adhesive note paper packaged in accordance with the teaching of the present method, with upper flap in a closed position.
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of some self adhesive note paper packaged in accordance with the teaching of the present method, with upper flap in an open position FIGURE 3 is an exploded perspective view illustrating the second step in the method.
FIGURE 4 is a top plan view illustrating the first step in the method.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF' THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The method of pack~~ging self adhesive note paper will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 through 4.
The method includes the following described steps.
Referring to FIGURE 4, :Firstly, place a perforation line 12 on a plurality of single sheets of self adhesive note paper 14 forming a pad 16. Perforation line 12 is positioned across an adhesive bearing portion 18 of pad 16 parallel and immediately adjacent to a peripheral edge 20. Referring to FIGURE 3, secondly, insert pad 16 of self adhesive note paper into a matchbook-like cover 2:Z having a lower flap 24 and an upper flap 26 engagable with lower flap 24. Referring to FIGURES 1 and 2, Thirdly, place a staple 28 through matchbook-like cover 22 including lower flap 24 and pad 16 intermediate peripheral edge 20 and perforation line 12. Single sheets 14 can be removed one at a time from pad 16 by tearing single sheets 14 along perforation line 12. It is preferred that staple 28 be placed as close to peripheral edge 20 as possible to minimize the amount of each single sheet 14 which is left behind in matchbook-like cover 22 when single sheets 14 are torn along perforation line 12. When this teaching is followed lower flap 24 extends from peripheral edge 20 past perforation line 12, such that lower flap 24 completely covers perforation line 12.
Referring to FIGUP:ES 1 and 2, the product which results from these teachings i:~ a note pad, generally identified by reference numeral 10.
The use of note pad 10 will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 i:hrough 4. Matchbook-like cover 22 and single sheets of pad 16 may be imprinted with promotional advertising and may be substituted for books of matches as a promotional gift to customers. During use customers. will remove single sheets 14 from pad 16 by tearing along perforation line 12. Llpon removal from pad 16 notations can be made upon single sheets 14 and adhesive bearing portion 18 can be used to mount single sheets 14 in a desired position on various objects.
It will be apparent to one skilled in that art the advantages provided by packaging self adhesive note paper in the manner described. :It will also be apparent to one skilled in the art that self adhesive portion 18 of note pad 10 must be capable of removal from objects without causing damage. It will finally be apparent to one skilled in the art: that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the Claims.

Claims

1. A method of packaging self adhesive note paper, comprising the steps of:
a. placing a perforation line on a plurality of single sheets of self adhesive note paper forming a pad across an adhesive bearing portion parallel and immediately adjacent to a peripheral edge;
b. inserting the pad of self adhesive note paper into a cover having a lower flap and an upper flap engagable with the lower flap, such that the cover resembles the shape and configuration of a matchbook; and c. placing a staple through the matchbook-like cover including the lower flap and the pad intermediate the peripheral edge and the perforation line, such that the single sheets can be removed one at a time from the pad by tearing the single sheets along the perforation line.

2. The method of packaging self adhesive note paper, as defined in Claim 1, the lower flap extending from the peripheral edge past the perforation line, such that the lower flap completely covers the perforation line.

3. A note pad, comprising:
a. a cover including a lower flap and an upper flap engagable with the lower flap, such that the cover resembles the shape and configuration of a matchbook; and b. a plurality of single sheets of self adhesive note paper forming a pad secured within the matchbook-like cover, the pad having a preforation line across an adhesive bearing portion parallel and immediately adjacent to a peripheral edge.
