Such gloves and protective pads that heretobefore had been designed, have been utilized in the sport or apparel industries.
Technological advances relating to the service industries are often intended to assist servers in performing their task with increased efficiency and ease. For example, removable cap-type closures in alcoholic malt beverages now have threaded bottle tops such as for example shown in C~n~ n Patent No. 1,107,687 so that they may be removed m~ml~lly, by rotation, intçntl~cl to elimin~tç the need for hand-held prying devices.
In physically removing the cap-type closure, commonly referred to as a "twist-off"
a clamp-like grip on the cap with the hand and a counterclockwise rotation are nPedecl However such twist-off caps usually present crimped edges and may require increased pressure to open, thereby causing injury to the hand or palm to today's individual who repeatably opens twist-off caps with their hand.
Today's mech~nic~l leverage type openers are available, however they elimin~te the simplicity of the twist-off cap. An ordinary glove of lighter construction would provide the user with a padded surface, but would restrict the movement of the hand and in a busy establishment the server would be required to remove the glove to perform all other tasks.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide protection for the hand and increase the grip for removing metal caps from threaded bottle tops, improve the speed and convenience in removing bottle tops.
~ - 3 - 2095477 It is a further object of this invention to provide a protective pad providing adjustable fastening means which allows the pad to fit dirrelelll relative sizes and shapes of fingers, thumbs and palms.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a protective pad for the palm of the hand extending between the thumb and at least one finger where the pad includes straps to releasably adjustably secure the pad to the thumb and one of the fingers.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a pad for protecting a hand when 10 twisting a twist top cap of a bottle comprising: a grip portion extending between the thumb and the index and middle finger of the hand; a fastening strap disclosed adjacent to the thumb for releasably adjustably embracing the thumb and securing the pad to the thumb; an index finger fastening strap disclosed adjacent the index finger for releasably adjustably embracing the index finger and securing the pad to the thumb; and a middle finger fastening strap disposed adjacent the middle finger for releasably adjustably embracing the middle finger and securing the pad to the middle finger.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other objects and features of the invention shall now be described in relation to the following drawings:
B
~ 4 ~ 20g~177 Figure 1 is a perspective use showing a right-hand pad according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a side perspective view of the invention of figure one with adjustable straps fastened thereto Figure 3 is a side view of the pad of figure 2 secured to the right hand.
Figure 4 is a view of figure 2 secured to the right hand across the palm in relaxed a position.
DESCRIP~ION OF THE INVENTION
Like parts shall be given like numbers throughout the figures.
Figure 1 illustrates the protective pad 1 which may be comprised of a variety of materials but in the embodiment described in figure 1 comprises of suede material.
The pad 1 has a straight side or edge 2 and a curved edge or side 3. The straight edge 2 is adapted to overlie the region between the thumb and index finger as shown in figure 4. The curved edge 3 is adapted to extend between the thumb and middle finger as shown in figure 4.
- ~ 5 ~ 2095477 The pad 1 also includes at one end thereof strap~6 which is adapted to releasably adjustably secure the pad 1 to the thumb as shown in figures 3 and 4. In particular, the strap 6 includes at one end thereof hook pile means and at the other end loop pile means releasably securing said strap. In particular, the hook pile means and loop pile means are commonly sold under the trade-mark of Velcro but may be comprised of other releasable fastening means providing that the strap embraces the thumb and is releasably secured thereto.
Accordingly by utilizing the hook pile means and loop pile means described herein, the pad and particularly the thumb fastening strap may adjust to a variety of sizes of thumbs.
The other end of the pad 1 includes a first strap or index finger strap 5 adapted to releasably embrace and secure the strap 5 and pad 1 to the index finger as shown in figure 4 as well as a second strap or middle finger strap 4 which is adapted to releasably securably embrace the middle finger as shown in figure 4.
The index or first strap 5 includes at one end thereof hook pile means 14 and at the other end thereof loop pile means 16 again which are typically sold under trade-mark of Velcro. Accordingly, the index finger strap 5 is adapted to releasably securably embrace a variety of sizes of index fingers so as to secure the pad 1 to the index finger.
The second strap or middle finger strap 4 also includes at one end thereof hook pile means 16 and at the other end thereof loop pile means 18 so as to releasably securably embrace a variety of sizes of middle fingers.
- 6 - ~ 2095477 The straps 4, 5 and 6 are comprised of a variety of materials and in the plerel~d embodiment comprise suede having the approl?liate hook and loop pile means stitched thereto. Moreover, the pad 1 and straps 4, 5, and 6 may be cut from a single piece of suede or alternatively, may be comprised of a number of pieces which are stitched together.
Although the preferred embodiment shown in the figures comprises of a pad secured to the thumb and the index and middle fingers the pad could be secured to one finger only as for example, the index finger.
Moreover the pad 1 may accommodate different sizes of hands or palms even though a single size pad is ~1tili7ecl, since the straps 4 and 5 will tend to ride slightly higher along the index and middle finger for a person who has a small hand compared to a person who has a larger hand.
The protective pad 1 accomplishes the desired result of protecting a hand and improving a grip without restricting the movement of the wearer or hltel rel ing with the other duties required by the wearer of for example, making change or pouring a drink.
Figure 3 demonstrates the protective feature of the pad 1, when twisting a twist-top 20 cap.
Moreover, the adjustable fasteners comprise straps 4, 5 and 6 where the finger and thumb allow the pad to fit different sizes of hands. Accordingly, by ~tili~ing the pad 1 as described herein, the following advantages become appalell~, namely:
'~
209~77 (a) protect the skin about the palm region of the hand and thumb when common twist-off caps are removed manually;
(b) improve the grip when used in a fashion described herein;
(c) allow the use of freedom of movement so as to perform other tasks;
(d) provide protective pad with adjustable straps on the fingers and thumb to fit sizes of fingers and hands.
Although figures 1-4 show the use of the pad 1 with respect to the wear of a right hand, such pad may also be designed so as to accommodate a left-handed person.
Although preferred embodiments as well as the operation and use have been described in relation to the drawings, it should be understood that changes in the preferred embodiment could be achieved by a person skilled in the trade without departing from the invention as claimed herein.
