Description
2 0 ~
Seatin~ fur~iture in pl~stic ~ rial, l~f ~hich the decoration o~
-the backrest a~d/or seatin~ element can b~ ~elec*ed.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
05 ~he present invention relates to s0ating furniture in plastic material, of which the decoration of the backrest and/or seating element can be selected.
BACKGROUN~ OF THE INVENTION
The plastic chairs, armchsirs or other seating units, whether they are made in one piece or adjustable, are all identical to one another, and can only be differentiated by cushions.
The disadvantage of this personalizing method is that it is relatively expensive for widely distributed products.
Moreover, as the cushion is not jointed to the piece of furniture, it is difficult to automatically constitute, during production, assemblies which will retain their stability.
Also, the cushions being susceptible to climatic conditions, it is advised not to leave them outside in all weathers as can be done normally with plastic furniture.
To overcome such disadvantages, some pieces of ~urniture comprise a shell and a backrest and/or seating insert which are interconnected by almost permanent assembly means. The insert is selected within a wide range of models which are all different in shape, finish, color, etc. It is advantageously molded in plastic material, but it can also be in wood, metal or other materisls.
In one known embodiment, the insert is fixed by means of studs in plastic material which are hot-riveted in the shell. It is therefore difficult to replace it with another.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore the object of the invention to provide an insert which is readily mountable and dismountable by the user himself without the help of any particular tool.
The insert is then interchangeable, which makes the product ~ore attractive, and enables the consumer to personali~e his choice by diversifying it. Indeed, the consumer can acquire 2~2~
several different inserts for each piece of furniture, and in doing so he can transform his garden furniture just by changing the inserts.
To this effect, and in accordance with the invention, the 05 insert is flexible and comprises along two opposite edges, fitting means for fitting the insert in a substantially perpendicular direction, which means are opposite and designed to cooperate with conjugated means molded on the shell, fitting of the insert then consisting in engaging its first fitting means into the conjugated one of the shell, in arching said insert so as to present its second fitting means opposite the conjugated one of said shell and in releasing the insert so that, by an elastic return motion, said second fitting means also come into engagement.
Advantageously, the insert comprises, on each one of its two other sides, at least one elastic locking member or clip, directed rearwardly and cooperating with a conjugated member of the shell.
According to a particular embodiment, the shell is bordered on two opposite sides of the opening, with flattened strips which are offset from the shell outer surface and thus define a rabbet, while the insert correspondingly forms U-sections designed tn fit over said strips.
The shell defines an opening of which two opposite sides are bordered by said conjugated fitting means, and by rabbets extending alnng the other two sides so that the insert fits closely to the shell when in position.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWIN~S
The invention will be more readily understood on reading the following description with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which :
- Figures 1 to 3 are partial perspective views with torn parts, illustrating the essential steps in assembling an insert according to the invention in a backrest shell of an armchair, - Figure 4 is a vertical section taken along line IV-IV
of Figure 3, - Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken along line V-V
of Figure 3, - Figures 6 and 7 are views similar to Figure 5 emphasi~ing the preliminary steps in the assembly of the clips of 05 the insert, - Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing inssrts placed in the backrest and in the seating element.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBOûIMENT
Referring to the drawing, this shows a one-piece armchair of which the shell 1 is molded in one-piece in plastic material. It has a backrest 2 and a seating element 3 supported by legs 4, a band 5 of the backrest extending on the sides to form armrests 6 integral with the seating element and the front legs.
The backrest 2 is a frame belongîng to the shell and defining a central opening 7. It is designed to receive a decorative insert 8 filling said opening. In the illustrated example, the insert 8 is constituted by molded platic material provided with sunk or raised decorative patterns such as canework or chequered patterns, or patterns representing flowers, animals, etc...; the color of the insert can be the same as that of the armchair, or different, and the decorative patterns can be differently colored from their base, by screen printing or printing the mass.
The frame of the backrest 2 comprises a strip 9 built on along the upper edge of its opening 7, which strip 9 is adapted to cooperate by interlocking in upward direction with a conjugated U-section 10 molded with the insert 8 and projecting rearwards.
Similarly, the frame of the backrest 2 comprises a strip 11 built on along the lower edge of its opening 7, which strip 11 is adapted to cooperate by interlocking9 but this time in downward direction with a conjugated U-section 12 molded with the insert 8 and projecting rearwards.
Moreover, locking members or clips are provided on the sides of the insert 8. ~n the illustrated example, two lug pieces 13 and 14 also molded with the insert, project rearwards 2 ~
approximately halfway up the sides thereof. The lug pieces are extended by teeth 15 and 16 facing in opposite directions and are designed to be engaged from the front towards the rear in slots 17 and 18 pro~ided in the frame of the backrest 2.
05 In this example, the frame of the backrest 2 comprises lateral projections 19 and 20 which are directed rearwardly and have a U-shaped section. The flanges 21 and 22 of tne projection 19 define the slot 17 which is meant to receive the lug piece 13 and said slot extends rearwards and through the outer flange 22 in order to form a fastening catch 23 for the tooth 15. The inner flange 21 is less high than the outer flange 22 and constitutes an abutment 24 for the insert 8 when the tooth 15 is in engagement with the catch 23. Said tooth has an inclined ramp 25 designed to cooperate with the outer flange so as to cause the elastic arching of the lug piece 13 when the insert is pushed rearwardly.
Similarly, the flanges 26 and 27 of the projection 2û define the slot 18 designed to receive the lug piece 14 of which the tooth 16 then cooperates with a fastening catch 28 when the insert 8 is brought to rest against an abutment 29 after elastic deformation of the lug piece 14 by reaction of an inclined ramp 30 of the tooth with the outer flange 27 of the projection 20.
The abutments 24 and 29 are offset from the front surface of the frame of the backrest 2 substanti.ally of the same measurement as the strips 9 and 11, so that ~he insert can fit in the resultingly constituted rabbet 31 closely against the front surface of the frame of the backrest 2.
To fit the insert 8, and as clearly illustrated in Figure 2, its section piece 12 is fitted onto the lower strip 11 of the backrest, then said insert is arched forward until its section piece 10 is in facing relationship with the strip ~ and it is then released to engage said section piece 10 onto said strip 9, while applying a pressure rearwardly in order to engage its lug pieces 13 and 14 into the slots 17 and 18 of the frame of the backrest 2 and to snap-engage the teeth 15 and 16 into the catches 23 and 28.
When the insert 8 is fastened, it is in resting contact on the 2 ~
abutments 24 and 29 and it is pressed closely against the outer surface of the frame of the backrest 2.
Obviously, the fitting means can be reversed, and in this case, the insert 8 is provided with strips and the frame of the 05 backrest 2 defines grooves. Similarly, the locking means can also be reversed~
Moreover, the fitting means can be provided along the lateral edges and the locking means along the top and bottom edges.
In the illustrated example, the insert 8 is mounted on the backrest of a one-piece armchair, in a simple and quick way;
it can also be readily dismounted.
An insert 32 di.agrammatically shown in dash-and-dot lines in Figure 8 can also be mounted in a frame of the seating element 3 of similar shape to that of the backrest 2.
Moreover, the backrest insert 8 and/or seating element i.nsert 32 can be mounted on an adjustable armchair.
