Abstract
Abstract:
A toe cap protector for workboots comprising a molded plastic member which is adhesively adhered to the top area of the boot. The purpose of this protective cap being to reduce the wear of the boot. The toe cap protector comprises a member made of a relatively wearproof material, the member having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface being adapted to be fixed to the boot and the outer surface being adapted to be in contact with the object. The member has a substantially concave configuration,a central section and a pair of side sections extending integrally from at least a portion of the central section on each side of the central section. The protector has a lower peripheral edge, each one of the side sections has an upper peripheral edge diverging outwardly from the lower peripheral edge of the protector, and the central section has a pair of upwardly diverging side edges, whereby the upper peripheral edges of the side sections and the side edges of the central section define a pair of substantially "V"-shaped cut-out sections.

Field of the invention:
The oresent invention relates to ~he .ield of footwear accessories, and more particularlv to a toe cap ~rotector for workboots comprisina a molded plastic member which is adhesively adhered to the top area o~ the boot. The purDose of this protective cap beina to reduce the wear of the boot.
Prior art:
Workboots such as the ones worn by construction wor~ers are usually made of leather or lea~he like material and are ~rovided with an internal steel cap for 3rotect;nq the toe~ of ~he wearer aqainst injuries which miqht result ~rom a relativel~ neavv object fallinq on the toe reqlon.
The reqular activities o~ most construction workers involve tasks during which the boots of the worker are subject ~o being impacted upon or to impact various tvpes of ob~ects. ~he rePetitiVe impacts between a boot and an anv qiven object will eventually lead to the wearinq out of the leather makinq up the boot. lrhe erosion of the leather will tend to be particularlY siqnificant if the objects are relatively abrasives, as is o~ten the case in construction areas.
For erqonomical reasons, the front or toe area of the bOOts is far more susceptible of beinq impacted upon then an~ other area.
Indeed, this area is susceptible of receivinq obiects which are dropped, of impactinq objects lyinq on the qround durinq the walkinq motion, etc.
Recent surveys have demonstrated that the wearinq out of the leather on the front portion of the boot is bY far the most frequent reason invoked for replacinq a pair of construction boots.
The erosion of the leather not onlY imPalrs the esthetical aspect of the boot and its thermal insulation proPerties but it also destroyes the waterproofinq capacitY of the boot thus creatinq a serious potential health hazard.;~
Indeed, wor~:ers wearina boots which are not watertiqht are susceptible of beinq electrocuted since the liauids on the qround of construction sites often carry electrical charqes emanatinq from surrounding electical tools and apparatus.
In order to circumvent this problem, the present invention proposes a toe cap protector adapted to be fixed ~o the boot at its most vulnerable location for preventinq the leather ~rom beinq worned out.

Neither one of these two patents discloses a ~rotector which can be readely adhered to the shoewear and which is specifically adapted to protect the latter aqainst erosion.
Summary of the invention:
Accordingly, the present invention Proposes a toe cap protector for protectinq a toe reqion of a boot aqalnst wear caused by contact aqainst an object, the toe caD protector comprises a member made of a relatively wear~roof material, the member havinq an inner surface and an outer surface, the 1nncr surface beinq adapted to be fixed to the boot and the outer sur~ace beinq adaPted to be in contact with the object.
The member has a substantiallv concave confiquration,a central section and a pair of side sections extendinq intearallY from at least a portion o~ the central section on each side o~ the central section In the preferred embodiment, the at least a portion of the central section is apDroximatly a lower half of the central section. In this embodiment,the protector has a lower peripheral edqe, each one of the side section has an upper peripheral edae diverging outwardly from the lower peripheral edqe of the protector, and the central section has a pair of upwardly diverqina side edqes, whereby the upper peripheral edqes of the side sections and the side edqes of the central section define a Pair of substantially "V"-shaped cut-out sections.
The inner surface has a substantially rough finish for facilitating the fixing of adhesive material.
The outer surface is provided with textured areas for minimizing the marking of the outer surface upon contact with the object.
The outer surface is further provided with inteqrally bulqinq cushioninq bars for thickenia an area most suscePtible of beinq impacted upon.

Detailed description of the preferred embodiment:
Referring to ~igure 2, there is shown a toe cap Pro~eCtor 10 embodying the invention adhesively attache~ to the toe area of a conventional workboot 12.
The toe cap protector lO has a central section 19 and a pair of side sections 16 extendinq inteqrally from a~proximatly the lower half of the central section 14 on each side. The protector 10 has a lower peripheral edqe 18 adapted to be position ad~acent the top rim 20 of the sole 22. Each one of the side sections 16 has an upper peripheral edqe 24 diverqinq ou~.wardlY from the lower peripheral edqe 1~. The central section 19 has a pair of uowardly diverginq peripheral side edqes 26.
The peripheral edqes 29 and ~6 define a ~air o~ substantially "V"-shaped cut-out sections ~8 on each side o~ the central section 14. The substantially "V"-sha~ed cut-out sections ~ ~cilitate the foldinq of the ~rotector 10 in a relativelY concave con~iauration and also facilitates the adaDtation of the relativelY concave protector 10 to boots havin~ various ~oe cap sizes and qeometry.
Indeed, the cut-out sections 2~ allow each one o~ the side sections 16 to fold relative to the central section 14 alonq a correspondinq pair of foldinq lines identified in fi~ure 1 bY the reference numeral 30. The cut-out sections 28 also allow the folding of the central section lg alonq a foldina line 32 substantially correspondinq with the upper ~eripheral edqes 24 of the side sections 16.
The specific qeometry of the toe cap protector lO thus allows for its adaptation to various toe cap sizes and shapes while insuring that the vulnerable regions are protected. The vulnerable sections are namely the front section of the toe reqion, covered by the side sections 16 and the lower half of the central section 14, as well as the top section of the toe cap, covered bY the upper half of the central ection 19.

As illustrated clearly in ~iqure 1, the central section 19 and the side sections 1~ are provided with textured areas indicated bv hatching lines delimited by a border. Irhe textured areas are provided to minimize markinq of the materlal cause~ by repetitive impacts.

The cushioninq bars 3~ are Drovided to thicken this critical area which is most susceptible of beinq imPacted uPOn.
Optionaly, the toe cap protector may have imbedded inscriptions such as the raised letterinq extendinq intearallY ~rom the surface and identified bY the reference numeral ~ in t.qure 1.
The imbedded inscriptions maY be used to ident1fY the manufacturer for example.

Claims (10)
1- A toe cap protector for protecting a toe region of a boot against wear caused by contact against an object, said toe cap protector comprising:
A member made of a relatively wearproof material, said member having an inner surface and an outer surface, said inner surface being adapted to be fixed to said boot and said outer surface being adapted to be in contact with said object.
A member made of a relatively wearproof material, said member having an inner surface and an outer surface, said inner surface being adapted to be fixed to said boot and said outer surface being adapted to be in contact with said object.
2- A toe cap protector as recited in claim 1, wherein said member has a substantially concave configuration.
3- A toe cap protector as recited in claim 1, wherein said member has a central section and a pair of side sections extending integrally from at least a portion of said central section on each side of said central section.
4- A toe cap protector as recited in claim 3, wherein said at least a portion of said central section is approximately a lower half of said central section.
5- A toe protector as recited in claim 3, wherein said protector has a lower peripheral edge, each one of said side section has an upper peripheral edge diverging outwardly from said lower peripheral edge of said protector, and said central section has a pair of upwardly diverging side edges, whereby said upper peripheral edges of said side sections and said side edges of said central section define a pair of substantially "V"-shaped cut-out sections.
6- A toe cap protector as recited in claim 1, wherein said inner surface has a substantially rough finish for facilitating the fixing of adhesive material.
7- A toe cap protector as recited in claim 1, wherein said outer surface is provided with textured areas for minimizing the marking of said outer surface upon contact with said object.
8- A toe cap protector as recited in claim 1, wherein said outer surface is provided with integrally bulging cushioning bars for thickenig an area most susceptible of being impacted upon.
9- A toe cap protector as recited in claim 1 adhesively fixed to said boot.
10- A toe cap protector as recited in claim 1, wherein said relatively wear proof material is polyurethane and wherein said protector has a thickness of approximatly 0.075 inches.
