Abstract

ABSTRACT

It is proposed to provide on vehicles with sliding doors an arrangement which effects opening or closing of the said doors by mechanical means operated by an electro-motor which may be controlled by the driver of the vehicle.

The arrangement comprises an endless chain meshing with a sprocket rotated by the electromotor. The chain is connected to the door. Activating the electromotor to one direction would result the opening of the door while activating to the other direction would close the door. The vertical edge of the door is provided with sensing means to avoid the slamming of the door on a person unintentionally.

Description

FIELD AND BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to an auxiliary device for use at vehicles and more particularly to an auxiliary device which is particularly useful as a mechanism for automatic opening and closing of sliding doors in van~
and other commercial vehicles.

Most vans and similar commercial vehicles are provided with side sliding doors, such doors are opened or clo~ed manually by the driver or the passengers of the respect-lve vehicle.

Experience has shown that in some instance~ it is inconvenient due to Yarious conditions to open (or close) the door in the said manner.

".
There are known devices for opening or closing of doors in vehicles, however, these devices relate to hinged doors or to hydraulic or pneumatic devices which require relatively long pistons as the doors in question are in most ca~es considerably wide. Equally, the known devices for manipulating sliding door~ on vehlcles are of rather complicated and costly construction see e.g. U.S. Patent No. 4,640,0S0, U.S. Patent No.
4,617,757, U.S. Patent No. 4,945,677 and 5,046,283.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide a mechanism which will facilitate the opening ~and closing) of sliding doors in vehicles.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a mechanism which is electrically operated.
It is yet another object of the present invention to ': "-.,:
provide a mechanism which could be also manually --;-operated.
It ig also an ob~ect of the present invention to provide a mechanism with safety means which would avoid the slamming of the door or catching someone thereinbetween.
It is an additional further object of the present invention to provide a mechanism which will include a separation clutch to avoid clamping of article~ by the sliding door.
Still, it is a further ob~ect of the pre~ent invention to provide a mechanism of small dimensions to enable the location thereof in a small limited space.
Finally, it is an ob~ect of the present invention to provide a mechanism which could be installed in all vehicle models and which could be easily operated by the driver or by the passengers in an emergency situation.

SHORT SUMMARY OF T}IE INVENTION
According to the invention the new mechanism compri~es an endless chain connected to the sliding door of a vehicle, said chain being led about a plurality of idle rollers and meshlng with a toothed wheel which is ln driven connection with an electric motor, intermediate said toothed wheel and said motor there being provided a separation clutch.

According to another feature of the invention the mechanism is provided with a handle which acts on said clutch and permits the separation of the motor and consequently makes possible the manual operation of the door, when so required.
According to a further feature of the invention the door edge is provided with sensing means, adapted to avoid the closing of the door on a passenger.

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

The invention will now be described with reference to the annexed drawings, in whlch:

Fig. 1 is a schematical perspective lay-out of the mechanlsm according to the invention.

Flg. 2 is a partial perspective view of a vehicle employing the mechanism.

Fig. 3 is a side view of the driving mechanism according to the invention.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the mechanism. `
Fig. 5 and 6 illustrate an embodiment of the mechani~m and the manual clutch separation.
Fig. 7 is an exploded illustration of the mechanism.
, .,: ' DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
,:
Turning first to Fig. 1, the new mechani~m is enclosed within inverted u-shaped housing ~ and comprises an endless chain 1 between the extremes of which a bracket 2 is inserted, said bracket in turn is connected to the sliding door D o$ the vehicle.
Chain 1 rides over a plurality of idle rollers 3 and a ~prlng 4' bia~sed pulley 5' carried on an arm 4 whlch keeps said chain under constant tension; At least one uch pulley is provided, however in ~ome case~ two or three may be provided (as seen in Fig. 7).
Chain 1 is moved by means of a sprocket 7 which i~
placed over axi~ 6 which in turn is driven by an electric motor 8 via a reduction gear 9 ~see Fig. 3 and 7). Sprocket 7 is placed between two friction plates 10 held under pre~sure created by a helical coil spring 11, so forming a clutch. It is quito apparent ; : :
, . ,: ~

that by activating motor 8, to have its shaft rotate either direction the door (not seen) which is connected to bracket 2 will slide to either direction. The activation of the motor 8, in that manner is effected by causing a polarity change in the well known way.
Nut 25 which is placed over spring 11 make~i possible the adjustment of the pressure applied on friction plates 10 It is thus possible to adjust the working force acting on the sliding door.
In the event of malfunction of the mechanism or any disturbance to the free movement of the door, the clutch can be manually separated by turning of handle 12 which is keyed on axle 13, on which an oval cam member 14 is keyed.
The turning of the handle (and consequently cam 14) causes cam 14 to engage two pivotaly connected levers 15. Said two levers 15 engage upper flange 16' being part of sleeve 16.
The lower flange 17 of sleeve 16 applies pres~ure on the upper friction disc 10. As mentioned before, the turning of which will cause friction disc 10 to disengage sprocket 7 which enables the free moYement of the door. The mechanism as a whole is mounted within housing H which ls secured to the motor by means of scewbolts 30. It should be noticed that the locklng ---~

mechanism of the door remains unchanged. The lock proper is opened by means of an electric actuator as ;
known in the art.

As can be seen in Fig. 2 the edge of door D is provided with a rubber or the like conduit 30 both ends are closed which is connected via branch 32 to a sensing means 34. A touch on said conduit 30 will be sensed by sensor switch 34 and stop the movement of tha door.
The embodiment illustrated in Fig. 5 and 6 is provided with a slightly different separation mechanism. To axis 13 two pins 28 are connected. The turning of handle 12 and axis 13 will cause pins 28 to engage two levers 15 which engage upper flange 16'.
The two levers 15 pivot about axis 29.
