Abstract

A flexible hanging planter for growing floral plants comprising a sheet of plastic material having a plurality of slits cut in one quadrant of the sheet. The sheet is folded over and sealed along two edges thereof forming a bag portion having an open and closed end.
The plurality of slits are at said closed end. A handle is bonded to the bag portion at the open end. The bag is adapted for receiving growing media and the plurality of slits are adapted to receive a plurality of seed plugs to be retained within the growing media and the handle is adapted to support the bag and growing media in a hanging condition.

Description

FLEXIBLE PLANTER
Field of Invention This invention relates to a device for growing decorative hanging plants. In particular, the invention relates to a flexible hanging planter from which floral plants will grow obscuring the flexible planter from view.
Background of Invention Flexible hanging planters of the type of this invention as illustrated in Figure 1 are commercially available from nurseries. These planters are made from a tube of flexible plastic material which is closed at one end. A handle is adhered to the open end of the tube. At the closed end of the tube, a plurality of longitudinally extending slits are cut into the front face of the tube thereof. The bag is filled with growing media. Seed plugs are inserted through the slits and embedded into the growing media. The planters are hung in a greenhouse for up to eight weeks. During this period, the seed in the plug germinates and begins to grow out of the slit and upwardly covering the planter. Impatience, begonias, garden chrysanthemums and poinsettias have been successfully grown in this fashion.
The prior art flexible hanging planters are very labour intensive for the greenhouses to manufacture. Manual labour must be used to carefully cut the plurality of slits on the front face of the flexible hanging planter without cutting through the back face. This process requires a certain amount of skill to properly space and cut the appropriate number of slits.
Summary of the Invention The disadvantages of the prior art maybe overcome by providing a flexible hanging planter constructed from a single sheet of plastic wherein a plurality of slits are cut 2082,26 substantially perpendicular to ane edge of one quadrant of the sheet. The sheet is then folded over and sealed along two edges defining a bag having a closed and an open end and a front and back face wherein the plurality of slits are at the closed end and on the front face. A handle is bonded on the back face at the open end of the bag.
According to one aspect of the invention a flexible hanging planter for growing floral plants comprising a sheet of plastic material having a plurality of slits cut in one quadrant of the sheet. The sheet is folded over and sealed along two edges thereof foxming a bag portion having an open and closed end.
Detailed description of the drawings In drawings which illustrate embodiments of the invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the prior art;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the sheet for forming the bag portion of the embodiment of Figure 2; and Figure 4 is a back elevational view of the embodiment of Figure 2.
Detailed description of the preferred embodiment The preferred embodiment is generally illustrated as 1f7 in Figure 2. The.
flexible hanging planter 10 generally comprises a bag portion 12 and a handle portion 14.
Bag portion 12 has a front face 16 and a back face 18. Bag portion 12 has a seam 20 along the bottom edge and a side seam 22 along the side edge thereof.
Handle 14 is a strip of material which is joined at each end thereof to back face 18 of bag 12. At paints 24 and 26, strap 14 is bonded to back face 18.
Front face 16 has a plurality of longitudinally extending and spaced slits 28.
Slits 28 extend a short distance from a point spaced inwardly from end seam 20 longitudinally towards the open end 30 of bag portion 12.
Bag portion 12 is manufactured from a single sheet of plastic as illustrated in Figure 3. Slits 28 are cut in one quadrant of the sheet substantially perpendicular to one edge. The sheet is folded over thereby presenting front face 16 arid back face 18. The two outer edges are sealed to form end seam 20 and side seam 22. I-Iandle 14 is then bonded to the back face 28.
The flexible hanging planter 10 can now be shipped in bulk to a nursery.
Unskilled labour can now take the bag 10 and put suitable growing media 32 into the bag portion 12. Seed plugs 34 are inserted through slit 28 into growing media 32.
The number of plugs 34 should generally equal the number of slits 28. Each seed plug 34 contains a seed. The flexible hanging planter 10 is then hung on a hanger 36 within a greenhouse. The growing media 32 is kept suitably moist.
In the normal course, each seed will germinate and a plant will begin to grow.
The plant will grow outwardly through the slit 28 and then upwardly towards the light source. Once the plant has grown sufficiently and has flowered, the plant effectively covers or obscures the flexible hanging planter 10 from view resulting in a decorative hanging plant.

In the preferred embodiment, the bag portion 12 is a 6 mil green plastic. The preferred plant to be grown from such planters are impatience or begonias.
Similar results have been achieved with garden chrysanthemums and poinsettias.
It is now apparent to a person skilled in the art that the flexible hanging planter the present invention could be readily modified. It is understood that certain changes in style, size and components may be effective without departure from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
