Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
LEAK PREVENTION DEVICE FOR A WASHING MACHINE
A leak protection device for washing machine comprises a tray portion with a 30 inch square base and 1.5 inch height surrounding side walls onto which the washing machine can be placed. A back splash portion includes a back sheet and two side sheets which extend forwardly from the back sheet at right angles thereto and overlie respective ones of the side walls of the tray. The sides extend forward approximately 8 inches so that they overlap the sides of the washing machine leaving a space behind the washing machine confined between the sides and in front of the back sheet within which the plumbing is received. Bottom edges of the sides and the back sheet include a flange to provide a seam overlapping the top of the tray. Water is carried from the washing machine or from the plumbing is then collected in the tray and discharged through a drain opening.

:
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
, The present invention relates to a leak prevention device for a washing machine for collection of leaking water and/or foam from a washing machine either of the dishwashing or clotheswashing type.
It is well known that washing machines have a 3~ tendancy to leak either a relatively small amount or a relatively catastrophic amount through misuse, malfunction or ; 10 breakage in the plumbing systems. Such leakages can cause significant damage to the surrounding areas of the home or building in which the washing machine is locatedO
In recent years there has been a tendancy for I such washing machines to be located in an area which is often more decorated or finished as opposed to a laundry room which could be of a simple nature with a water proof floor. There is therefore in the modern more decorated area much greater tendancy for the water leakage to cause damage to floor coverings, to walls and into the area beneath which may be decorated and finished with dry wall, carpeting etc Up until now it is believed that there has been no device provided which is designed to properly collect any leakages from a washing machine to prevent such leakage from ;~1 causing damage to the surrounding areas.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is one object of the present invention, therefore, to provide a leakage protection device for a washing machine.
According to the invention, therefore, there is provided a leak prevention device for a washing machine comprising a rectangular tray portion having a flat rectangular base and four side walls each upstanding from a respective side edge of the base, the base being dimensioned such that when lying flat on a floor it can receive a base of the washing machine resting thereon, and a splash back portion including a flat back sheet for lying flat against a vertical wall rearwardly of the washing machine and two sides each extending ! substantially at right angles to the back sheet, the sides being spaced by the width of the washing machine so as to ~ project forwardly from the back sheet at right angles to the ¦ wall and along a respective side of the washing machine, abottom edge of the back sheet and the sides being arranged such that water running down the back sheet and/or the sides falls into the tray portion.
One or more embodiments of the invention will now be described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

:~ DETAILED DESCRIPTION
~ A leak prevention device for a washing machine ,~ comprises a tray portion 10 and a back splash portion 11. The tray portion comprises a square base 12 generally of 30 inches ~, along each side which provides a sufficient dimension to ,`~ receive the conventional 30 inch dimensions of a conventional .,1 ~, washing machine generally indicated at 13. At each edge of the ';~ base 12 is provided an upstanding wall 14 with the walls in the base being integrally formed preferably by a vacuum forming technique from a suitable plastics material to define an open ~, top tray. The height of the wall 14 is preferably of the order ~, of 1.5 inches which, as shown in Figure 2, is at a height approximately equal to the base of the washing machine so that it does not in any way interfere with the operation of the ~; washing machine whether that be a front door type or a top .'. l opening type.
The tray 10 is thus fully closed except for a :
drain opening 15 which as shown is provided in one of the side :~ ~ ' ~ ';

walls 14 but can be provided in the base if required. The drain opening 15 comprises an outlet tube 16 surrounded by a flexible sealing member or gromet ]7 which seals the tray to ~ prevent escape of water from the area around the hose. The ¦~ hose 16 is connected to a suitable drain area through a hole in .
,~ the floor or other plumbing system to duct any water away from ¦; the tray which may collect in the tray.
The backsplash portion 11 comprises a rectangular rear sheet 18 and a pair of sides 19 and Z0. The sheet 18 is attached to a wall surface at the back of the washing machine.
,,; The sides 19 and 20 have sufficient stiffness so they can extend outwardly from the back sheet 18 at right angles ~ thereto. The width of the backsheet is equal to the width of ,1 one of the side walls 14 of the tray so that the sides 19 and ~¦ 20 overlie two parallel side walls while the back sheet lies along the rearward most of the side walls of the tray.
At each bottom edge of the back sheet and the sides is provided a flange portion 21 which is turned inwardly and then downwardly to lie along an inside surface of the respective side wall so as to overlie that inside surface in an overlapping seam arrangement. The flange portion has a height . ~ ~
of the order of 0.5 to 1.0 inches simply to provide an overlapping seam arrangement so that any water running down the sides or the back sheet is guided to extend over the top edge :;., ~' ., ''', `' il :

i of the respective side wall and into the tray. The width of each of the sides is of the order of 8 inches so that with the conventional spacing of a washing machine from the wall of the ,~ order of 4 inches the sides extend along a respective side of ~,~ the washing machine to provide an overlap.
As shown in Figure 2 the plumblng for the wash I machine is generally indicated at 23 and connects into the i washing machine and suitable plumbing supply in the wall or ' across the wall. The plumbing 23 is thus retained behind the washing machine but within the area bounded by the splash portion so that any breakage of the plumbing or separation of the plumbing from the washing machine which can cause catastrophic leakage will be collected in that area and will run down into the tray. rrhe dimensions of the outlet pipe 15 are selected so that even in the event of a continual supply of the water from a broken pipe, the water runs out of the tray at an equal or slightly greater rate to prevent the tray from overflowing.
¦~ With an option extra a shelf 25 can be attached across the top of the sides 19 and 20 and the back sheet 18.
This shelf thus projects over the rear part of the washing machine 13 to help confine the area behind the washing machine within which the plumbing 23 is located and to provide a shelf for receiving washing powder or other similar materials.
