Abstract
ABSTRACT
A jug for holding a flaccid container, comprising a rigid body portion having a base for supporting the container from below and a pair of fingers defining a channel for receiving a top portion of the container, and a gripping and sealing means adapted to slide on the pair of fingers for sealing the channel around the top portion of the container.
A jug for holding a flaccid container, comprising a rigid body portion having a base for supporting the container from below and a pair of fingers defining a channel for receiving a top portion of the container, and a gripping and sealing means adapted to slide on the pair of fingers for sealing the channel around the top portion of the container.
Description
2~7~4 SKELETON JUG
Field of the Invention This invention relates in general to jugs and more particularly to a jug for holding, dispensing, opening and closing a flaccid liquid container.
Background of the Invention Flaccid liquid containers are being used increasingly to store detergents and other liquids as a low cost alternative to cardboard or rigid plastic containers and the like. The use of such containers also contributes to the reduction of solid waste. The well known Envir-O-PakTM container consists of a flaccid container or bag, having a gusset at the bottom thereof.
Where the container or bag contains written matter thereon, it is desirable that such written matter should be seen by the end user. For example, where the container or bag contains liquid detergent, or other hazardous substance, it may be desirable that cautionary notices or directions be given on the bag or container itself.
One disadvantage of such prior art containers or bags is that there is no means for sealing the bags or containers after dispensing of a portion of the contents.
Summary of the Invention According to the present invention, a skeleton jug is provided for supporting full and partly full containers, thereby eliminating the necessity for permanent containers. For example, the Envir-O-PakTM
container itself may be used in conjunction with the skeleton jug of the present invention to dispense the liquid. In addition, the jug of the present invention allows written matter on the bag to be seen, and provides means for sealing an open bag or container after dispensing of a portion of the contents therefrom.
Brief Description of the Drawinqs A description of the preferred embodiment is provided below with reference to the following drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the jug in 2~76~fi4 accordance with the present invention with a flaccid container or bag held therein;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the jug according to the present invention with a gripping element thereof shown separate therefrom;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of jug molding according to the present invention; and FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of a sliding gripper/sealer portion of the invention.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment Turning to Figures 1 and 2, the skeleton jug of the preferred embodiment is shown comprising a combination of a rigid jug molding body portion 1 and a sliding gripper/sealing portion 3 which cooperate to hold and support a flaccid liquid container 5.
The jug molding body portion 1 is free standing and is provided with hand grips 7 which function as a handle when dispensing liquid from the container 5. The base of the jug molding body portion 1 incorporates an upward curving tongue 9 which serves to grip the flaccid container 5 from its underside via the gusset portion thereof.
In operation, the flaccid container or bag 5 is placed in the jug as shown in Figure 1 such that the gusset portion is gripped by the tongue 9 and the top edge of the bag or container 5 is located within the channel 11 formed by parallel finger portions 13. The fingers 13 are angled downwardly and outwardly such that the corner of the bag or container 5 may be cut open to form a spout for dispensing or decanting the contents thereof.
The flaccid container or bag 5 is gripped within the channel 11 in response to sliding the gripping/sealing portion 3 along the fingers 13 in the direction of the arrow shown in Figure 2. Specifically, 207~
the gripping/sealing portion 3 serves to compress the fingers 13 such that the channel grips the top edge of the container or bag 5.
Once the bag has been opened as shown in Figure 1, the gripping/sealing portion 3 may then be pushed forward along the downwardly sloping portion of the fingers 13 so as to seal the opening spout in the bag 5 by compression.
According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the jug molding body portion 1 is fabricated from clear plastic in order that any graphics appearing on the container 5 may be viewed.
In the alternative embodiment of Figure 3, the hand grips 7 of Figures 1 and 2 are shown replaced by a conventional handle 7.
According to the alternative embodiment of the sliding gripping/sealing portion 3 shown in Figure 4, an internal cutting blade 15 is provided for automatically opening the bag or container 5.
Other embodiments or variations of the invention are possible. For example, although the jug of the present invention has been described for gripping a bag or container 5 which holds liquid contents, the contents of the bag 5 may be powder, particulate, etc.
All such variations are believed to be within the sphere and scope of the present invention as defined by the claims appended hereto.
