Description
- l - 2061460 The present invention relates to toilet seats more particularly to a quick release mounting for toilet seats.
Toilet fixtures commonly are fitted with doubled seats having a seat component and a lid. Both are carried on a hinge, itself mounted on a toilet bowl by bolts through fastener openings in a rear flange of the bowl and nuts threaded onto the bolts below the flange. It is difficult to clean the area of the toilet bowl around the hinge, where it is attached to flange. Foreign material can accumulate in such hard to reach areas. For complete cleaning, it is necessary either to scrub the area with a small brush or to remove the seat, which is a difficult and sometimes unpleasant task.The present invention relates to a novel arrangement that ameliorates this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a hinge fitting for a toilet seat the fitting comprising a first component adapted to be secured to a toilet seat, a second component pivotally connected to the first component and quick release fastener means for fastening the second component to a toilet bowl.
The invention also provides a toilet seat incorporating the hinge.
By quick release fastener is meant one that disengages with a simple, usually single, movement, for example a push on a push button or a one-quarter turn of a knob.
Using quick release fasteners on the seat hinge allows the entire seat to be lifted from the bowl after a simple manipulation of the fasteners. The seat may then be deposited in a bathtub or shower stall for washing, while the entire toilet bowl may be effectively cleaned. The seat removal and re-installation operation is extremely simple, to the point that it is practical to remove the seat for cleaning every time the toilet is cleansed. The quick release seat is useful in both domestic and commercial -2- 2061~60 applications.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the present invention:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a toilet equipped with a seat according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the toilet seat of Figure 1 showing the seat removed;
Figure 3 is an exploded view of a hinge;
Figure 4 is a cross-section of a quick release fastener in a released condition; and Figure 5 is a cross-section of the quick release fastener in the engaged condition.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a toilet 10 having a conventional toilet bowl 12. The bowl has a rear, horizontal flange 14 with a pair of laterally spaced openings 16 that serve for mounting a seat assembly 18. The seat assembly itself includes an annular seat 20 and a lid 22, both pivotally mounted on the toilet bowl by a hinge fitting 24.
The hinge fitting includes a pair of seat brackets 26 fastened to the seat 20 and projecting to the rear. Two lid brackets 28 are fastened to the lid 22 and also project to the rear. The two sets of brackets 26 and 28 are pivotally mounted on a horizontal hinge rod 30 extending across the toilet fixture, behind the seat and above the flange 14. The ends of the rod 30 are carried by two hinge brackets 32, each of which has a lug 34 apertured to receive the respective end of rod 30 and a flange 36 that projects to the rear, over the bowl flange 14. A bore 38 through each flange 36 aligns with one of the openings 16 in the bowl flange 14 so that the flanges 36 can be -3- 2061~60 secured to the flange 14 by respective fasteners 40.
The configuration of the fasteners 40 is most clearly illustrated in Figures 3, 4 and 5~ Each fastener includes a receptacle 42 with a tubular, externally threaded body 44 that fits through one of the openings 16 in the rear flange 14. A
flared head 46 on the upper end of the receptacle 42 seats in the upper end of the opening 16. A nut 47 is threaded onto the receptacle below flange 14 to secure the receptacle in the opening 16. The bore 48 through the receptacle 42 has an annular, peripheral channel 50 partway along its length.
A second component of the fastener is a body 52 with a lower end in the form of a sleeve 54 slideable in the bore 48 of the receptacle 42. Towards its upper end the sleeve has an external thread 56 that threads into a mating bore in one of the hinge flanges 36. Below the thread is a diametrical through passage 58 that is configured with slight constrictions 60 at the outer periphery of the .sleeve 54. With the body 52 fully inserted into the receptacle 42, the cross passage 58 aligns with the peripheral channel 50 in the receptacle.
A pair of balls 62 are carried in the cross passage 58. These serve as locking elements for fixing the body 52 to the receptacle 42 as will be described more fully in the following. An end plug 64 closes the bottom end of the sleeve 54.
At the upper end of the body 52 is an enlarged head 66 with a counterbore 68 at its upper end. A lip 70 extends inwardly over the outer end of the counter bore.
The lock operating means includes a plunger 72 extending into the body 52 from the top. It has at its lower-most end a cylindrical ball retainer 74 andimmediately adjacent the ball retainer a relieved neck 76. A stem 78 leads from the neck to an enlarged head 80 at the upper end of the plunger. The head has a peripheral rib 82 at its bottom end, the rib being positioned in the counter bore 68 of the body 52 and being retained against release by the peripheral lip 70. A push button 84 forms the upper end of the head 80.
The plunger is biased towards the raised position illustrated in Figure 5 by a coil spring 86 housed with the counterbore 68 and engaging between the bottom end of the counterbore and the head 80. With the plunger in the position illustrated in Figure 5, the retainer 74 engages the two balls 62 and forces them outwardly in the cross passage 58 until the balls project into the channel 50 in the receptacle 42. This effectively locks the body 52 to the receptacle, so that the flanges 36 of the seat hinge can not be lifted from the rear flange 14 of the toilet bowl.
When the push button 84 is pressed down, as illustrated in Figure 4, the relieved neck 76 of the plunger comes into line with the balls 62 and the balls are free to move in-wardly, out of engagement with the channel 50 in the receptacle 42. This unlocks the body 52 from the receptacle 42, allowing the body and the attached hinge flange 36 to be lifted from the flange 14 of the toilet bowl for cleaning purposes, as illustrated in Figure 2. The restricted openings at the end of passage 58 retain the balls in the passage.
While one embodiment of the quick release fastener has been described in the foregoing, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular fastener illustrated. Other fasteners may be used to similar effect and are intended to be included within the scope of this application.
