Abstract
In a vector excitation source digital speech coder utilizing vector excitation, candidate excitation sources (111, 121) are con-sidered independent of certain pitch parameters. Once a particular excitation source has been selected, the excluded pitch par-ameter may then be optimized, resulting in an overall improvement in speech quality.
