Description
31.
~evice securing a quick-acting clamping de~ice for fixing the cover of a pressure vessel The invention concerns a method of securing a quick-acting clamping device for fixing the cover of a pressure vessel, with the quick-acting clamping device, on the one hand, embracing a flange section at the open end of the pressure vessel and, on the other hand, embracing a U-shaped cover section in the closed position.
Methods of closing pressure vessels with so-called quick-acting clamping devices have been known. Such pressure vessels are provided with a flange section at the upper open end, the contour of the cover being adapted to that of the flange. When closing the pressure vessel, the protruding open ends of the flange or the cover are embraced by the clamp-shaped quick-acting device so that, upon pressurization of the vessel, the quick-acting clamping device prevents the cover from being opened in the axial direction.
Similar closing clamps are known for large-volume pressure vessels - see also the applicant's patent application DE-29 53 541-A1 or EP-O 093 878-B2 - where the ring-shaped closing clamps are designed to form at least two-part rings.
In order to optimize safety standards, arrangements have been made to prevent unintentional opening of the vessel when under pressure. Here, the quick-acting closing device serves as a protective device by locking, for example, a pressure relief valve, such pressure vessels being equipped with these valves by the manufacturer.
....
-- 2 - 2~ 31 The objective of the invention is to additionally protect the cover against unintentional opening of the vessel when under pressure.
According to the invention, this objective is attained by the pressure vessel being equipped with locking or mating components fitted into the U-shaped components of the quick-acting clamping device on the external side of the cover and/or on that of the pressure vessel flange, i.e. on the contact surface and on the mating surface of the U-shaped components. These locking or mating components lock at the slightest movement of the cover when the vessel is being pressurized.
Upon pressurization of the vessel, the locking and mating components and their mutual locking operation prevent unintentional loosening of the clamps when the vessel is under pressure. Only after relieving the pressure or lowering the cover or if the latter can be moved slightly in the axial direction, do the locking components are released and the clamps can be loosened.
An embodiment of the invention provides for a mating groove or mating tongue to be fitted, for locking purposes, on the external side of the cover, on that of the flange and/or on that of the internal contact surface of the U-shaped components of the clamping device.
From the technological point of view, such a design is relatively easy to realize, as the mating groove and mating tongue can be provided easily either by machining or bolting.
. .
The invention, however, also provides for the mating components to be equipped with a great number of .. . . . ~ . . .: .

2C~Q31 concentrically arranged grooves/tongues. A great number of such grooves or tongues prevents the U-shaped components of the clamping device in particular from being weakened excessively.
Another embodiment of the invention provides for the cover and the U-shaped component of the clamping device to be provided with projections or recesses.
In the following, the invention is explained in detail - with the aid of the drawing, which shows in Fig. 1 a simplified cross-section of the closing area of a pressure vessel and in Fig. 2 and 3 modified embodiment examples as part-sections.
A pressure vessel, generally marked (1) in Figure 1 and only shown in a simplified way and in sections, is provided with a protruding flange (2) fitted near the opening. A plug-type section (3a) of a cover marked (3) mates into the opening marked (la), with the seals (4) only being suggested in the drawing.
Cover (3) shows the wall sections (3b) corresponding with flange (2), with the wall sections being diagonally clamped with a mainly U-shaped quick-acting clamping device (S) shown in cross-section together with the U-shaped components (5a) and (Sb).
The left half of Figure 1 shows the pressure vessel (1) in pressurized condition, whereas the right half of Figure 1 shows the pressure vessel (1) when not under pressure.

In the external marginal section (3b), cover (3) is provided with a tongue (6), whereas a groove (7), corresponding with tongue (6) in cover (3), is fitted to the corresponding internal surface of the U-shaped component (5b) of the quick-acting clamping device (5).
It functions as follows:
If a cover (3) is placed onto the pressure vessel under atmospheric pressure (right half of figure 1), the quick-acting clamping device (5) can be moved and tightened beyond flange (2) or the corresponding marginal section (3b) of cover (3). This position is shown in the right half of Figure 1. If the pressure vessel (1) is then pressurized, cover (3) moves slightly upwards, as shown in Figure 1, causing tongue (6) to engage in groove (7), thus locking the components. Consequently, unintentional release of the quick-acting clamping device in the direction of arrow (8) is prevented.
Other embodiments are shown in Figure 2. A groove (7') may also be provided in flange (2), and a corresponding tongue (6') in the appropriate U-shaped component (Sa).
The upper part of Figure 2 shows that several grooves (7'') and several tongues (6'') may be fitted into the corresponding components.
Finally, Figure 3 shows the possibility of distributing projections (6''') and corresponding recesses (7''') over the circumference of the vessel to prevent any weakening of the quick-acting clamping device.
