Abstract

IN CAR ANIMAL WATERER
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
An animal watering apparatus has a reservoir bottle with a delivery spout projecting downwardly from the bottom of the bottle. A valve in the delivery spout may be opened by an animal to deliver water on demand. Below the delivery spout is a basin of rigid, chewable synthetic plastic material that may be impregnated with a flavoring or odorizing material. The basin is connected to the bottle to form a unit. A support for the bottle and basin unit is mounted on a spring loaded telescopic pole so that the bottle and basin can be mounted in an automobile at any convenient location.

Description

2 ~

IN CAR ANIMAL WATERER
The present invention relates to an animal watering apparatus and more part;cularly to such an apparatus that is suitable for use in an automobile.
Pet owners often find it necessary to travel with their pets, esp~cially dogs.
With automobile travel in hot weather this can be both uncomfortable and unhealthy for the animal, which is generally confined and has no access to a water supply. The present invention is therefore concerned with the provision of a watering apparatus that may conveniently and practically be used in an automobile.
According to the present invention there is provided an animal watering apparatus comprising:
a reservoir for containing water;
a delivery spout projecting downwardly from the reservoir and having a downwardly open end for delivering water from the reservoir;
valve means normally closing the end of the delivery spout and responsive to contact of an animal's tongue with the end of the spout to open the spout to allow water to run therefrom;
a basin of substantially rigid, chewable, synthetic plastic material;
means mounting the basin below the delivery spout; and mounting means for mounting the apparatus in an automobile;
The substantially, rigid, chewable synthetic plastic material from which the basin is manufactured is intended to be sufficiently robust to resist chewing by pets, especially dogs. One example of a suitable material is the nylon mater;al used for synthetic dog bones. A material of this sort can be impregnated with a flavoring or odorizing agent malcing it attractive to the animal. The basin below the spout serves to cateh drips from 2 ~

the spout to prevent the splashing of water about the interior of the vehicle.
The mounting means of the apparatus is preferably a spring loaded telescopic pole that will mount at any convenient location with the vehicle.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an exempl~ry embodiment of the present invention:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a watering apparatus according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the reservoir, basin and support of the apparatus; and Figure 3 is a front elevation of the reservoir, basin and support.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a watering apparatus 10 for in-car use. The apparatus includes a reservoir bottle 12 with a threaded neck 14 on the top end and a cap 16 for closing the threaded neck. The cap is intended to seal the neck closed to prevent the ingress of air. A delivery spout 18 is locaeed at the bottom end of the reservoir. This includes a cylindrical tube 20 sloping downwardly and outwardly from the bottle. The tube is equipped with a valve 22 at the lowermost end to retain water in the bottom until the valve is actuated by an animal. The valve includes a lip 24 forming a constriction at the open end of the tube 20 and a ball 26 that rides freely in the tube and engages the lip to close the tube.
Positioned below the lowermost end of the delivery spout 18 is a shallow basin 28. This is a relatively thick, rounded basin made of the nylon material convsntionally used for synthetic dog bones. It is positioned sufficiently far below the outlet end of the spout 18 that an animal has access to the end of the delivery spout in order to raise the ball 26 from the seat provided by the lip 24 to allow water run from the delivery spout. The basin is positioned to catch water delivered from the spout and not consumed by the animal.
The basin 28 is connected to the back side of the reservoir bottle 2 by a vertical arm 30 integral with the basin and with the bottle.
The reservoir bottle and basin assembly is held in a support 32 that is generally L-shaped with an upright arm Iying along side the bottle 12 and the arm 30 and a lateral support 36 extending under the basin 28. A hoop 38 is mounted on the upright 34 and extends around the reservoir bottle to hold it in place. The bottle and basin assembly may be lifted out of the support 32 for filling and cleaning purposes.
The upright arm 34 of the support 32 is fixed to a telescopic pole 40. This pole includes a lower section 42 with a floor engaging foot 44 and an upper section 46 with a ceiling engaging head 48. An internal spring (not illustrated) inside the pole extends the pole to provide firm engagement between the pole and the floor and ceiling surfaces or any other two confronting surfaces between which the pole may be located.
With the apparatus of the present invention, the reservoir may be filled with water ~md mounted at an appropriate location inside an automobile using the mounting system. Animals may drink from the reservoir by lapp;ng at the ball 26 of the valve 22 to release water from the delivery spout and by lapping up water from the basin 28. Some animals, particularly dogs, will derive enjoyment from chewing on the basin, which is made from a suitable material for this purpose. The basin material may be impregnated with a flavoring or odorizing material to enhance the animal's enjoyment.
While one embodiment of the present invention has been described in the foregoing, it is to be understood that other embodiments are possible within the scope of the invention and are intended to be included within the appended claims.
