Abstract

A paper tail ripper (10) having a pair of rotat-ably mounted knives .(12, 14), air motors (26, 28) which counter-rotate the knives (12, 14), and a deflector plate (60) which deflects paper tail (100) toward the knives.
The knives traverse closely spaced overlapping circles as they counter-rotate. Deflector (60) sweeps paper tail (100) onto transfer mechanism (30), which transfers paper tail (100) away from ripper (10), so that tail (100) may be threaded through a calender stack, etc. Ripper (10) is pivotally mounted on transfer mechanism (30) for movement between storage and operating positions.
