Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

This device is a mechanically driven rotary injection pump to meter and inject precise quantities of high pressure Natural Gas directly into the combustion chambers or inlet ports of multi-cylinder Internal Combustion Engines so as to improve the economy of operation and reduce polluting emissions into the atmosphere.

Description

GA~EOUS FUEL INJ~TIO~ P~MP
Thls invention rel~te~ to the reduction of autornobile ~xhaust ernissions, greater economy of operation an(l the better use nf an abundant fossil ~uel. It is well known that the combustion of ~atural Gas/air mi~tures are almost entirely non-polluting. The e~clusive use of this fuel in automotive engines will eliminate tht' necessitv of e~pensive catalytic converters and all the other poll~ltion contlot devices.
Tlle pre~ellt method of introducing the gas into the combustion chambers of spark i~nited internal combustion engines is a dernand system into the inlet manifold~
in which the distribution amongst the cylinders is of an uneven quality.
Relyin~ as it does on manifold depression~ it can be no better -than the normally ~spirated and carburetted gasoline burning engines it seeks to replace: and to large e~tent nullifies the economy and non-polluting characteristics of the ~d~OUS fuel.
This invention: Rotary Gaseous fuel Distributor/Injection pump, is intended to rectity the mal-distribution by injecting a precise quantity of gas tlirectly into the cylinders or inlet ports.
Thi~ pulnp is for use on multi-cylinder internal combustion engines and comprises:
multi cylinder pump body with integral pressure head (~
incorporating reciprocating plungers (4) in a timed sequence to suit the firing order of the engine it will serve.
~O The plungers are activa-ted by an adjustable rotating cam!spool (6) that is keyed and locked to a rotating shaft (~) a-t the appropriate plunger setting. Plunger followers (10) pivoted from the pump body are interposed between the plungers I

and ~he ram/~pnoL and are held in co~tact with the plun~ers hy halrpin sprin~s.
~he c~lm/spool settlllg is acljustable to meet the nee~ls of various size engines all~l the differing swept cyllnder volumes.
The plungers are under the control of a circular throt~le ring (12) which abuts their outer ends and defines the plunger stroke.
Adjustable stops attached to the pump body (14) limit the idle and full throttle settin~s.
Tlle a~ial shaft is supported in three ball race~ and is driven by chained sp~nclie~s or suitable gearing from the cran~shaft or camshaft of the engine to Il) whicll it is attached.
Tlle throttle rillg is welded to a number of control rods which slide through ~uides in the pump body and pressure head and the threaded ends are bolted to an outer throttle plate, which is under the control of a servo mechanism and an over-riding inter-connected throttle linkage and lever or foot pedal.
The throttle plate is biased to the idle or cut-off setting by compression ~prin~s that surmount the control rods and are betwi~t the pressure head and the outer throttle plate.
Inlet orifice are drilled throu~h the peripheral walls of the pump body into the plun~er cylinders. Each inlet is Eitted with a non-return valve and i~n connect to a common supply line.
n~ltlet ori~ice are drilled through the pressure head at the diametral centre of e~cll cylinder and connect by equal length steel lines to the cylinder injector vnlve~.

The inlet pres~ure is held to 100 psi. appro~ clnd the outlet pressure will vary bet~een 'QOjl400 pSl.
~he rotcltlng assembly is enclosed within a stee] sleeve that bolts to the pre~?sure head and pump body and carries the gear end plate and bearin~.
The bclll races are pressed into machined recesses in the pump body and end plate;
hehilld which are grease cavities that connect by passageways -to the peripheral gl-eas?e nipples.
In dr~lwing~ which illustrate embodiments of the invention? Fico?ure 1 is a ~ide eletration partly in section showing the main elements. Fi~ure ~ is a plan view 1(~ o~ ~he of the under-side of the pump body~ showing the disposition of the plunL,er/cylinder~s, plun~er followers and throttle ring control rods and guides.

Claims (4)

1 A mechanically driven multi-cylinder rotary gaseous fuel distributor/injection pump to inject precise quantities of Natural Gas, directly into the cylinders or inlet ports of multi-cylinder spark fired internal combustion engines: which comprises;
2 A compact multi-cylinder body.
3 An axial rotating shaft, onto which a cam/spool is keyed and locked to reciprocate the piston plungers that are co-axial to the shaft but at 90°
to the actuating cam.
4 A means to control the piston stroke; consisting of a throttle ring that limits and determines the injection gas ratio, in conjunction with the sliding adjustably locking cam/spool.
The pump cylinder outlets are connected by equal length steel pipes to spring loaded injector nozzles mounted in the cylinders/ports of the engine.
The shaft is driven by direct connection, (chained gear drive or multiple gear wheels) to the engine crankshaft.
6 Plunger followers pivoted from the pump body are interposed between the cam/spool and plungers 7. A means to control the throttle ring by an external servo mechanism that connects directly to the external throttle plate.
8. Another means to control the throttle ring is by a centrifugal governor mounted on the shaft below the cam/spool.
9. The pump body is machined from steel or a hard alloy of aluminum or from a cast iron or cast alloy casting, 10. The plungers are of high carbon steel with Nylon seal rings recessed into circumferential ring lands.
