Abstract
Form 24 Sheet 2 of 5 ABSTRACT
The primary function of this invention is to maintain the opera-tion of the cooling system in ZEBRA MUSSEL infested waters or an other infested waters that a self contained cooling system is necessary for proper cooling of an outboard motor or an inboard outbourd unit (Which is sometimes referred to as a stern drive unit.). The secondary advantage being, there is no need to remove the cooling fluid for winter storage of a vessel if antifreeze coolant is utilized.

Description
~ f~ 7 DISCLOSURE Sheet 3 of 5 Specification (1) The invention relates to a self contained cooling system for an outboard motor or an inboard outboard unit (Also known as a stern drive unit.) to allow the operation of said unit in infested waters.
(2) The present system being used can be blocked by ZEBRA MUSSEL
infestation or other infestation that is likely to grow on or in the intake port, thereby blocking the flow of cooling water and causing engine damage due to over heating.
Winter storage made easier if the heavy outboard or inboard outboard unit does not require draining for such storage. This can be accomplished by using an antifreeze mixture instead of using normal water as a coolant (3) The coolant is passed through a heat exchanger that is located in the lower submerged section of the drive unit. This heat exchanger is in direct contact with the water that the boat is operating in and may require the addition of ooling finns to increase the effective area of the heat exchange.

This heat exchanger can either be internal in the case of a new boat propulsion unit designed or can be an external retrofit unit to accommodate existing units. (The heat exchanger shown in figures 1, 2 & 3 is the latter.
REFER TO FIGURES 1, 2, & 3 (on sheet 5) 1/ Heat Exchanger (Internal & external cooling fins if necessary).

Claims
CLAIM Sheet 4 of 5 The device allows the operator of an outboard motor or inboard outboard unit the freedom of boating in infested waters without the problem of damaging the engine due to over heating caused by a plugged intake port.
The device also protects the owner against winter freezing cracks in the engine block due to poor maintenance in preparing the drive unit for winter storage if a suitable antifreeze mix is used for the coolant.
