Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A portable barbecue apparatus has a stake portion for driving into the ground, or a ground support ring, each having a pivot socket by which a support post can be located in standing relation beside camp fire. The support post has a series of permanently attached, laterally extending sleeves of square tubing, to receive corresponding grill handle portions in loosely entered relation therein from either end of the sleeve. The barbecue is extremely robust, and effectively resistant to malfunction or seize-up due to exposure and rust-ing of the components. The arrangement facilitates the simul-taneous use of a number of grills, and permits their prepara-tion, when in a reversed location, clear of the fire, and the socket mountings for the post permits lateral pivotting of the post and grills.

Description

CAMPFIRE BARBECUE STAKE
TECHNICAL FIELD
This invention is directed to a barbecue apparatus, and in particular to a barbecue appa~atus for use wl~h an open campfire.

BACKGROUND ART
_ A large number of patents exist which illus~rate a variety of approaches to the provision of a fireside barbecue apparatus.
Most, if not all of these prior art patents comprise infinitely adjustable arrangements, having closely interfitting parts whereby a grill or grills may be selectively repositioned along the length of the barbecue support post. Many of the below listed prior art arrangements utilize threaded ~asteners in order to achieve the desired removability or adjustability of the grill on its support post. However, in the environment of use, which is outdoors, with the consequent exposure of the structure of the apparatus to the weather elements, and due to the use of low cost iron components that are subject to corrosion, these prior art elements are extremely susceptible to rusting and ~amming.
The complexity of many of the prior art patents, in addition to increasing their vulnerability to weathering and corrosion effects, also increases their initial cost, while complicatlng their usage.
Due to the generally rusty and inevitably greasy condition of such barbecues and their use over generally unprotected fires, their stowage and/or handling is preferably kept to a minimum, thus rendering such barbecue apparatus yet more prone to corrosion and malfunction.
The following list of prior art is intended to be illustrative and not exhaustive of the relevant prior art:

2,827,846, March 1958 Karkling;

DISCLOSURE OF _NVENTION
The present invention provides a simple, robust, barbecue apparatus resistant to climatically induced malfunction.
The invention further provides a barbecue apparatus having a loose spigot and socket connection between the grill means thereof and the supporting post thereof.
The invention further provides a barbecue apparatus embodiment having a spike with a pivot socket for insertion in driven relation into the ground, to receive the support post portion of the apparatus in engaging relation within the socket.
In a further embodiment there is provided a supporting foot for the support post, the foot being preferably in the form of a ring, on which a fire may be located.
The present invention thus provides a campfire barbecue apparatus for use with an open campfire for barbecuing food thereover, comprisingj ground engaging support means, having upwardly oriented connection means for engaging a post in secured relation therewith;
post means having a lower end for engagement with the connection means a stepped arrangement of laterally extending socket rneans permanently secured to the post-means; and grill means having a handle portion for entry in removable engaging relation with the socket means, whereby the grill means may be selectively positioned in supported relation on the post means.

2 ~

In the preferred embodiment the stepped sockets are of square section tube, being secured as a serles in mutua1.ly spaced relation down at least the top portion o~ the g~ill post.
The sockets are preferably secured to the side~, of the post, having an end thereof projection laterally.
In a pre~erred embodiment one or more pairs of sockets are secured in mutually adjacent relatlon, on opposite sldes of the post to permit the positioning of a pair of grills thereby in level, side by side relation.
The provisions of sockets in stepped relation, at different heights on the post permits the positioning of one grill above another.
The handle portion of the grill means is freely insertable within the socket means, while limiting lateral canting of the grill means relative to the post.
An alternative embodiment to the ground spike and socket is a substantially circular ground ring, having hollow socket means extending upwardly therefrom.
The grill means in accordance with the present invention may have a rectangular grill frame with a plurality of cross bars thereacross, and with one side portion of the frame comprising an extension of the handle portion.
A particular advantage of the present invention, in addition to robust, low cost construction particularly insensitive to the elements, is the freedom provided to the user to locate the grill at a desired height, and in a preferred relation to the campfire and the other grills that may be in use.
The capability of the post to swivell on its supporting socket provides a full range of adjustability of the grills in re]ation to the camp fire.
The foregoing arrangement permits the provision of one or more pairs of sockets, having a socket on each side of the post.

In the preferred embodiment the grill bar portions are of slender stainless steel rod.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS:
Certain embodimen~s of the invention are described, ~y way of illus-tration, without limitation o~ the ir~vention thereto, reference being made to the accompanying drawlnys, whereln;
Figure 1 is a perspective view o~ the respective component portions of the presently disclosed barbecuing apparatus, in exploded relation;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the Figure embodiment, differently arranged, and Figure 3 is a section taken at 3-3 of Figure 2.

BEST MODE OF CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Referring first to Figure 1, the combination apparatus 10 comprises a support hoop 12 having a sleeve 14 extending upwardly therefrom, and a spike assembly 16, including a sleeve portion 18.
The post and socket assembly 20 comprises a rod-like post 22 having a series of tubuIar sockets 24 secured thereto.
The sockets may be secured to either one or to bo-th sides of the post 22, at any desired level on the upper end of the post.
The lower end of post 22 provides a loose fit into the respective sleeves 14 and 18 of the two support means, to enable post 22 to be readily inserted or withdrawn, or pivotted, in use, within a sleeve 14 or 18 into a desired orientation relative to a camp fire.
The grill assemblies 26 are each provided with a square section handle portion 28 sized for easy entry into the square sockets 24. An auxiliary looped handle portion 29 extending parallel with the plane of the grill facilitates the handling thereof.
The grill bar portions 30 may be of stainless steel, being generally of round section, typically of one quarter inch stainless steel rod.
In use, the respective components of the apparatus may ~ , . . . ....... , :.- :

be readily assembled and disassembled by sliding fit. The square handles have an easy sliding fit in their respective square sockets which has the effect of permit-ting a sligh~
declination, with slight lateral canting of the grill surfac1e, to concentrate grease and drippings for deposition away from the post 22, and hence tends to safeguard the user from s~oke inhalation, when attendiny to the barbecue.
The freedom of en~ry or exit of the square handle portions 28 within the sockets 24 greatl~ facilitates location o~ any one of the grill assemblies 26 at any desired convenient location on the post 22.
A successful embodiment comprises a 24-inch diameter ring of 7/16-inch round iron rod having a 6-inch length of 3/4 -inch iron pipe as a socket, extending upwardly therefrom, welded to the ring.
A 12-inch pointed spike of 3/4-inch round rod has a 4-inch length of 3/4-inch iron pipe as a socket welded to the spike.
A 3-foot length of 3/4-inch round rod has 3 or 4-pairs of sockets, the sockets comprising 2-inch lengths of 3/4-inch square tubing welded thereto, mutually spaced at 6-inch intervals, along the upper 2-feet of the post.
A grill having 1/4-inch stainless grill bars has a 1/2-inch square section iron bar forming a 12-inch handle and a 10-inch side to the grill.
A lS--inch length of 3/3-inch diameter round rod formed into a loop is welded to the handle, to form the auxiliary handle 29.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY
Outdoor barbecue apparatus enjoys wide market penetration and widespread use in the North American continent, with usage elsewhere to a lesser degree.
