Description

PAGE-l-BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
01 This invention relates to a coated or uncoated toothbrushing 02 dentifrice tablet which is convenient for oral hygiene cleaning.
03 Many different dentifrice preparations are patented for clean-04 ing the oral cavity including toothpaste, powder, liquid toothpaste 05 and tablets.
06 Thus, after reviewing my collection of over 300 dentifrice re-07 lated patents ranging from U.S.# 1,082,681 through U.S.# 4,547,-08 362 it has become evident that I have created a unique dentifrice 09 preparation. An example of prior art is U.S.patent # 3,116,208(Ed-monds Sr.).This toothpowder tablet has NO Sodium Fluoride and re-11 mains in tablet form until it is crushed by the teeth of the us-12 er.The active ingredients are Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Lauryl13 Sulphate. In U.S.patent # 3,151,028 (Hay,Schram)the dental tablet 14 is not fast acting but instead is time-slow released.
SUMMARY AND DETAILED DISCLOSURE
-In my tablet preparation is a combination of the following ag-16 ents. The active Fluoride agent of Sodium Fluoride or Sodium Mono-17 fluorophosphate in the range of .05% to .40% by weight preferably 18 .20% along with passive agents as follows. The PL~QUE agents of 19 Calcium Carbonate in the range of 10% to 70% by weight preferably 34% by weight and Sodium Bicarbonate in the range of 5% to 50%
21 preferable 15% by weight. The TARTAR agents being Tetrasodium Pyr-22 ophosphate in the range of .5% to 10% preferably 3% by weight and 23 Disodium Pyrophosphate in the range of .5% to 10% preferably 3%
24 by weight.
The DETERGENT agent is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate in a range of 26 .5~ to 10% preferably 2% by weight. The SWEETENER can be Sodium 27 Saccharin in a range of .01~ to 5% preferably .5% by weight or 28 NUTRASWEET in a range of .01% to 5% preferably 1% by weight.A na-29 tural sweetener may also be used. The FLAVORING agent may vary fr-om a wide range such as spearmint, licorice, bubblegum, strawberry 31 to amaretto to creme de menthe in the additive range of ~01% to 32 5% by weight preferably 1~ by weight. The flavor may be an oil or 33 powder preferably a powder.Easy to use and does not create a sta-34 tic in the mixture. The flavor may range from an artificial to a natural or a combination of both mixed together. The COLORING ag-.

0' ent may range from a spectrum of colors from w2i~é~ ugh black.
02 The color will coordinate with the flavor. An example is bubblegum 03 flavoring with a pink or light red F.D.&C. LAKE #5 or#40.The col-04 oring ~gent may range from a dye to a lake either non-oil or oil 05 based and may be water soluable or non-water soluable. The prefer-06 red combination is a lake, oil based and NON-soluable with an add-07 itive range of .005% to 3~ by weight preferably .02~ by weight 08 depending on the color combination used. The BINDING agent may be 09 chosen from numerous excipients such as Dicalcium Phosphate,Micr-ocrystaline Cellulose,EMDEX to a Cellulose.SORBITOL or XYLITOL
11 may be also used. The preferred BINDING agent is a combination of 12 M.C.C.- Microcrystaline Cellulose in a range of 10% to 60% by we~
13 ight preferably 25% by weight (granular-micron size approximately 14 100 microns) along with XYLITOL in a range of 1% to 25% by weight preferably 3% by weight and SORBITOL in a range of 1% to 40% by 16 weight preferably 12% by weight. Both SORBITOL and XYLITOL yield a 17 good mouth feel for the chewable tablets. The formula Binding ag-18 ent may also use M.C.C. alone which would make up the total 40%
19 by weight and SORBITOL may also be used alone as the binding ag-ent at the preferred 40%.The overall range for the binding agent, 21 no matter which is used,is from 10% to 60% by weight. EMDEX is a 22 Dextrate and should not be used as I prefer a SUGAR FREE TABLET.
23 Dicalcium Phosphate leaves an after taste and is also hard to ma-24 sk when used in a chewable tablet form which is not ingested.
Especially important in making a dentifrice tablet is using 26 Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate in GRANULAR or COARSE
27 size particals instead of the powder form. The granulars should 28 range in micron size from 10 thru 500 preferably approximately 29 100 microns. This is considered DIRECT COMPRESSION material to by-pass the powder to granulation stage, then to tablets. The Binding 31 agent M.C.C. is also purchased in micron size to make the direct 32 compression easier.
33 The tablet Flow-Lubricant agent most widely used is MagnPsium 34 Stearate. It is added to aid the formula in flowing thru the rot-ary tablet press with the least trouble. The Flow agent ranges fr-36 om .05~ to 10% by weight preferably .5% by weight.
37 The aforementioned formula,with all the ingredients mixed to-38 gether,is then placed into a ro~ary press and compressed into a PAGE-3- 2 ~ ~ 6~1 ~ t ~
01 hard but chewable toothbrushing tablet. These tabiets are now plac-02 ~d into a coating machine, either pan or air, preferably the pan me-03 thod ,and coated with a protective cellulose. The amount or thick-04 ness of the coating may range from .10% to 10% by weight prefer-05 ably approximately 3~ by weight. To remain a chewable the tablet 06 must remain between a K.P.(KILO PRESSURE) of a range of 10 to 12 07 K.P.'s.Any harder anA the tablet becomes difficult to compress,es-08 pecially in the mouth of the user. The ideal K.P. of the initial 09 powder tablet is 6 to 8 K.P.'s.This K.P. may range from l to 100 K.P.'s.The K.P. is increased by from l to 2 K.P.'s when the coat-11 ing is added. The coating is a cellulose, either H.P.M.C.-HYDROX~-12 PROPYL METHYCELLULOSE or H.P.C.-HYDROXYPROPYL CELLULOSE with a Tr-13 adename of OPADRY.The coating may range from a clear (NO COLOR) to 14 any of the color-coded coordinating with the flavors choices in this application.Preferred is a clear coating which is flavored 16 the same as the tablet, inner core, ingredients.
17 The finished tablet is very convenient for brushing your teeth.
18 The coated tablet also yields several important factors:
l9 (a) hardness for shipping and handling.
(b) extended shelf life.
2i (c~ a moisture barrier:limits migration and penitration.
22 (d) protects against bacteria growth.
23 (e) prevents discoloring and breakdown of the core 24 ingredients.
(f) prevents tampering with the tablet. -26 (g) most importantly:the coating prevents the MIGRATION of 27 the FLAVOR from the inner core ingredients.
28 OPADRY is a tough, printable, economical, highly consistent,non-29 caloric, non nutritive, non allergenic and resistent to microrganism growth coating.Moreso than coatings formulated with natural gums.

12 Referring back to the color-coding:a single agent or all of the 13 agents may be colored red and coordinate wi~h a red for the straw-14 berry flavoring.
As to the manufacturing, all selected ingredients are assayed 16 then the selected FLUORIDE,PLAQUE,TARTAR,DETERGENT and BINDING ag-17 ents are added together and mixed to the desired consistency.Next 18 the selected SWEETENER,FLAVOR-coded and COLOR-coded agents are ad-19 ded to the aforementioned mixture and mixed to the desired consis-tency.To this mixture is added the tablet FLOW-LUBRICANT agent and 21 futher mixed therein.Thereafter the desired tablet weight-amount, 22 strength and shape are selected and the entire mixture is placed 23 into a rotary tablet press and compressed to these aforementioned 24 manufacturing specs. The selected coating, flavoring and coloring combination is now added and mixed into the coating. The method of 26 The method of coating is selected at this point and the tablet is 27 placed into this method to be coated to the manufacturing specs.
28 The final preferred product is a coated,color/flavor-coded coordi-29 nating toothbrushing tablet ready for packaging and consumer use.
With this invention of a dentifrice toothbrushing tablet herein 31 described it should be understood that various changes may be made 32 in the preparation of the agents arrangement and form without dep-33 arting from the scope of the following claims. An exclusive proper-34 ty or privilege is claimed as hereby defined.
