Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The glasses frame of the present invention includes a lense receiving portion and a pair of arms pivotally secured to the lense receiving portion. Each arm has a multiple piece construction comprising a forward arm portion at which the arm is pivotally secured to the lense receiving portion, a rearwardly extending arm portion extending to an ear mount which fits over ones ear when the glasses frame is in use and a connector portion providing a bendable connection between the forward arm portion and the rearwardly extending arm portion and reducing likelihood of damage to the arm.
The glasses frame of the present invention includes a lense receiving portion and a pair of arms pivotally secured to the lense receiving portion. Each arm has a multiple piece construction comprising a forward arm portion at which the arm is pivotally secured to the lense receiving portion, a rearwardly extending arm portion extending to an ear mount which fits over ones ear when the glasses frame is in use and a connector portion providing a bendable connection between the forward arm portion and the rearwardly extending arm portion and reducing likelihood of damage to the arm.

The present inventior relates to a flexible supporting arm in a glasses frame which substantially reduces damage and breakage to the arm.
BACKGROUND OF T~E INVENTION
As just about everyone who wears glasses will appreciate, the area most susceptible to oamage in the glasses frame is along the supporting arm. The ~rms WhiCh are of an elongated relatively thin nature comparea to the rest of the frame often break either airectly in tne arm itself or at the pivotal connection to the lense supporting portion of the frame.
SUM~ARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
The present invention proviaes a glasses frame having a lense receiving portion and a pair of arms pivotally secured to the lense receiving portion with each of the arms having a multiple piece damage resistant construction. In particular, each of the arms comprises a foLward arrn portion at which the arm is pivotally securea to the lense receiving portion, a rearwardly extending arm portion extending to an ear mount which fits over ones ear when the ~lasses frame is in use and a connector portion in the form of a bendable connection between the forwara arm ~portion and the rearwaraly extending arm portion WhiCh reduces the likelihood of damage an~ breakage to the arm.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION ACCORDING TO THE PREFERRED
EMBODIMENTS OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
Figure 1 shows a glasses frame generally inaicatea at 1. This frame includes a lense receiving portion 3 which has a pair of small pivot connections 5 to either sioe of the lense receiving portion. A pair of arms 9 are then connected to the small pivot connections 5 of tne lense receiving portion.
Each of the arms has a multi-piece flexible or bendable construction as best seen in Figures 2 tnrougn 4 of ~he drawings. This construction comprises a forwara snort arm portion 10 and an elongated rearwardly extending arm portion 14. The forward arm portion 10 inclu~es a secono small pivot connection 11 wnicn is pivotally secured in a standard manner to tne small pivot connection 5 airectly on ~he glasses frame.

in an ear mount 17 as shown. Tnis ear mount simply fits over ones ear to support the glasses frame wnen tne glasses are in use.
The key to arm 9 lies in tne provision of a flexible or bendable connection between arm portions lû ana 14. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 through 4 an~ best seen in Figures 2 ana 3, tnis flexible connection comprises a coil spring 13 connecte~ at its enas to the arm portions 10 10 and 14. Coil spring 13 is covered by a small sheatn or tube 12 which provi~es a separation of arm portions 10 and 14 and maintains tension on the coil spring.
In the specific embodiment shown coil spring 13 includes a pair of hooked ends as shown. Arm portion 10 includes a small eyelet 16 while arm portion 14 incluaes a small eyelet 15. As will be seen in the drawings, these eyelets both extend axially of their respective arm portions. The hooked ends of the coil spring are snappeo into the two eyelets ana as noted above tension is maintained on the spring to maintain its connection witn the eyelets via the tube or sheath 12.
The arms of most standar~ glasses have a rigid overall construction. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 through ~ of the ~rawings, the forwara arm portion 10 ana the rearward arm portion 14 of each of the arms once again have a rigid or solid construction to provioe a stable support for the glasses frame. In addition, sheath or tube 12 has a rigid construction to resist bending of the glasses arm under normal useage. Here it should be notea that arm portion 14 has a reduced diameter end member 14b which telescopically fits into one end of tube 12 while arm portion 10 has a ball end 17 which also telescopically fits into one end of the tube 12 in a ball ana socket type r `

manner. Therefore, although the arm normally maintains 2 straight position, it will bend at the benaable connection in the event of undue force or pressure placea on the arm.
In particular, the tube 12 will pivot about the ball ena 17 of the forward arm portion 10 but as soon as the force or pressure on the arm is releasea the arm will snap back to it normally straight position. Therefore, under normal circumstances each of the arms is sufficiently r gia to provide more than adequate support to the glasses frame but 10 if needed, the arms will bend to substantially reauce tne likelihood of damage to each of the arms.
Figure 5 of the arawings shows a somewhat moaifieo arm aenerally indicated at 9a. This arm incluaes a forwara arm portlon lOa having a pivot connection lla an~ a rearwara arm portion 14a. The forward and rearwara arm portions are connectea by a rubber connector 12a which once again unaer normal conditions is sufficiently stable to hola the straight line positioning of the arm as shown but which is bendable under force to resist damage to arm 9a.
Although various preferred embodiments of tne invention have been described in detail, it will be appreciated by those skillea in the art that variations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

The present inventior relates to a flexible supporting arm in a glasses frame which substantially reduces damage and breakage to the arm.
BACKGROUND OF T~E INVENTION
As just about everyone who wears glasses will appreciate, the area most susceptible to oamage in the glasses frame is along the supporting arm. The ~rms WhiCh are of an elongated relatively thin nature comparea to the rest of the frame often break either airectly in tne arm itself or at the pivotal connection to the lense supporting portion of the frame.
SUM~ARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
The present invention proviaes a glasses frame having a lense receiving portion and a pair of arms pivotally secured to the lense receiving portion with each of the arms having a multiple piece damage resistant construction. In particular, each of the arms comprises a foLward arrn portion at which the arm is pivotally securea to the lense receiving portion, a rearwardly extending arm portion extending to an ear mount which fits over ones ear when the ~lasses frame is in use and a connector portion in the form of a bendable connection between the forwara arm ~portion and the rearwaraly extending arm portion WhiCh reduces the likelihood of damage an~ breakage to the arm.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION ACCORDING TO THE PREFERRED
EMBODIMENTS OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
Figure 1 shows a glasses frame generally inaicatea at 1. This frame includes a lense receiving portion 3 which has a pair of small pivot connections 5 to either sioe of the lense receiving portion. A pair of arms 9 are then connected to the small pivot connections 5 of tne lense receiving portion.
Each of the arms has a multi-piece flexible or bendable construction as best seen in Figures 2 tnrougn 4 of ~he drawings. This construction comprises a forwara snort arm portion 10 and an elongated rearwardly extending arm portion 14. The forward arm portion 10 inclu~es a secono small pivot connection 11 wnicn is pivotally secured in a standard manner to tne small pivot connection 5 airectly on ~he glasses frame.

in an ear mount 17 as shown. Tnis ear mount simply fits over ones ear to support the glasses frame wnen tne glasses are in use.
The key to arm 9 lies in tne provision of a flexible or bendable connection between arm portions lû ana 14. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 through 4 an~ best seen in Figures 2 ana 3, tnis flexible connection comprises a coil spring 13 connecte~ at its enas to the arm portions 10 10 and 14. Coil spring 13 is covered by a small sheatn or tube 12 which provi~es a separation of arm portions 10 and 14 and maintains tension on the coil spring.
In the specific embodiment shown coil spring 13 includes a pair of hooked ends as shown. Arm portion 10 includes a small eyelet 16 while arm portion 14 incluaes a small eyelet 15. As will be seen in the drawings, these eyelets both extend axially of their respective arm portions. The hooked ends of the coil spring are snappeo into the two eyelets ana as noted above tension is maintained on the spring to maintain its connection witn the eyelets via the tube or sheath 12.
The arms of most standar~ glasses have a rigid overall construction. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 through ~ of the ~rawings, the forwara arm portion 10 ana the rearward arm portion 14 of each of the arms once again have a rigid or solid construction to provioe a stable support for the glasses frame. In addition, sheath or tube 12 has a rigid construction to resist bending of the glasses arm under normal useage. Here it should be notea that arm portion 14 has a reduced diameter end member 14b which telescopically fits into one end of tube 12 while arm portion 10 has a ball end 17 which also telescopically fits into one end of the tube 12 in a ball ana socket type r `

manner. Therefore, although the arm normally maintains 2 straight position, it will bend at the benaable connection in the event of undue force or pressure placea on the arm.
In particular, the tube 12 will pivot about the ball ena 17 of the forward arm portion 10 but as soon as the force or pressure on the arm is releasea the arm will snap back to it normally straight position. Therefore, under normal circumstances each of the arms is sufficiently r gia to provide more than adequate support to the glasses frame but 10 if needed, the arms will bend to substantially reauce tne likelihood of damage to each of the arms.
Figure 5 of the arawings shows a somewhat moaifieo arm aenerally indicated at 9a. This arm incluaes a forwara arm portlon lOa having a pivot connection lla an~ a rearwara arm portion 14a. The forward and rearwara arm portions are connectea by a rubber connector 12a which once again unaer normal conditions is sufficiently stable to hola the straight line positioning of the arm as shown but which is bendable under force to resist damage to arm 9a.
Although various preferred embodiments of tne invention have been described in detail, it will be appreciated by those skillea in the art that variations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Claims (5)
- THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH AN EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
l. A glasses frame having a lense receiving portion and a pair of arms pivotally secured to said lense receiving portion, each arm having a multiple piece construction comprising a forward arm portion at which the arm is pivotally secured to said lense receiving portion, a rearwardly extending arm portion extending to an ear mount which fits over ones ear when the glasses frame is in use, and a connector portion providing a bendable connection between said forward arm portion and said rearwardly extending arm portion and reducing likelihood of damage to the arm. - 2. A glasses frame as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the forward arm portion and the rearwardly extending arm portion of each arm is of a rigid one piece construction.
- 3. A glasses frame as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said connector portion comprises a spring and a sheath over said spring.
- 4. A glasses frame as claimed in Claim 3, wheein said sheath has a rigid construction and wherein said forward arm portion and said rearwardly extending arm portion each have end members telescopically fittable into said sheath, said spring allowing extension of said arm under force and enabling pullout of either of said forward arm portion and said rearwardly extending arm portion relative to said sheath.
- 5. A glasses frame as claimed in Claim 1, having a rubber connector between said forward arm portion and said rearwardly extending arm portion.
