Description
FOR NEUTRALIZING EFFECTS ~ NEFA8 ~ E8 IMPURITIES OF N-DICHLOROPHOSPHORYL
T ~ ICHLOROPHOSPH ~ ZENE AND ITS POLYCONDENSATE
The subject of the invention is a process for neutralizing tion of the harmful effects of impurities of N-dichlorophospho-ryl trichlorophosphazene of formula:
o he C12 P - N = PC13 N- ~ dichlorophosphoryl) trichlorophosphazene (in abbreviation P2NOC15) is used, as a monomer, for the preparation of polydichlorophosphazene, according to a process written for example in French patents 2,466,435 and
- arrêter la croissance des chaînes à un certain niveau de masse moléculaire ;
n c12P (o) NPC13 Cl2P (O) (N-PCl2) n Cl + (nl) POCl3 This preparation of polydichlorophosphazene by polycondensation requires a very high purity P2NOC15.
Depending on the purity, we can obtain a polydichlorophosphazene of more or less high mass, and, in cases where ~ the purity is completely insufficient, we will get a completely crosslinked polymer.
P2NOCl5 impurities can have two main types of action:
- stop the growth of chains to a certain molecular weight level;
- induce parasitic reactions of polycon-densification, leading to branching and bridging interchains, to finally get a crosslinked polymer and thus completely unusable.
The quality of P2MOC15 can therefore be assessed by behavior and we observe differences in reactivity quickly very important in terms of polycondensation in according to the P2NOC15 preparation parameters. So the parameters mentioned for example in French patents 2.612.169, 2.612.171 and 2.606.3 ~ 6 influence the behavior-. '- ~.
. : -.
P2NOC15 during polycondensation. Pollutions accidental events can also occur and it has been observed, for example, that traces of moisture can limit the molecular mass or cause crosslinking of the polyconden sat.
The object of the present invention is therefore to obtain P2NOCl5 whose behavior during polycondensation is exempt from the previously mentioned aleas.
More precisely, the subject of the invention is a pro-ceded neutralization of the harmful effects of impurities P2NOCl5, this method consisting in associating PCl5 with said P2NOCl5.
Within the meaning of the invention, the expression "associate PCl5 to P2NOC15 "designates the only simultaneous presence of the two products, without necessarily imposing any reaction either of said products or of PC15 with one or the other of the impurities of P2NOCl5.
From this f ~ it, PCl5 can be associated with P2NOCl5 to different moments since the preparation of P2NOC15 itself until the polycondensation of said P2NOC15. However, being given that when PC15 is introduced into the syn-P2NOCl5 thesis, solvent evaporation may cause part, it is better to add it after concentration crude P2NOClS. P2NOC15 can be prepared by following the technique described for example in the American patent

sation évoluant de façon defavorable. La polycondensation duP2NOC15 présente deux periodes :
- l'une pendant laquelle on observe un départ de POC13 et pendant laquelle se forment des chaînes courtes (cette période peut durer de 3 a 10 ~ures à 280C) ;

When we introduce the PC15 into the raw P2NOC15, we obtain serve a favorable effect on the purity of the distilled P2NOC15 and also on the distillation yield. At the end of the dis-tillation, the boiler frequently contains several for hundred oligomers. When distilling in the presence of PCl5, we suppress the formation of these oligomers which is, well obviously, favorable to the yield.
The addition of PCl5 can also be done at the start or during polycondensation, said polycondensation can before being driven using for example the technique written in French patents 2.6 ~ .170 and 2.612 ~ m. Adding polycondensation can make it possible to catch a polycondensation-Have .. ~. . .

sation unfavorably evolving. The polycondensation of P2NOC15 has two periods:
- one during which we observe a departure from POC13 and during which short chains are formed (this period can last from 3 to 10 ~ ures at 280C);
- the other during which the sance of molecular masses from the level of oligomers up to the high masses, this without visible clearance of POC13 (this period can last from 10 to 40 hours at 280 ° C).
Measuring the release speed of POC13 roughly predict the behavior of the polycondensate during the continuation of the polycondensation. If the speed is very fast (> 1% conversion per minute at 2600C), experience shows that polycondensation will lead to a crosslinked polymer. Under these conditions, it is possible to rectify this aberrant reactivity by adding PC15 during the first period.
This addition results in an immediate slowdown of the release of POC13 and polycondensation can be conducted, under usual conditions, up to a high level of molecular mass, without crosslinking.
During certain polycondensations, clearly under the effect of impurities playing the role of limiting chain tutors, the growth of molecular masses stops at insufficient levels. In these cases, adding PC15 allows ~ polycondensation to start again and reach the desired molecular weight level.
When PC15 is added to the raw P2NOC15, it is not generally not necessary to exceed a rate of 20 ~
(weight of PC15 relative to the weight of crude P2NOClS). This rate is advantageously between 0.1 and 5%. When ~ eu PCl ~
is associated with PiNOC15 subjected ~ polycondensation, the quanti-very high tees of PC15 should be avoided to avoid mation of P3NC112 according to the following process:
P2NOC15 + 2 PC15 - ~ (C13 PNPC13) PC16 + POC13 . -, ''':' ~?
the presence, in the polycondensate, of P3NC112 thus formed, leading only to a low mass polymer. The amount of PC15 introduced must therefore be limited if we want reach high masses. In this hypothesis, it should consider a rate of 2 ~ by weight as a limit higher, the recommended amounts generally being taken between 0.05 and 1% by weight.
P2NOC15 ~ as treated in accordance with The invention, the association P2NOC15 and PC15 as well as the polycondensates of P2NOC15 treated by association with PC15 also constitute objects of the invention.
The following examples illustrate the invention.
EXAMPLE 1 (¢ omparative) 2.709 g of crude P2NOC15, prepared according to the process described in US Patent 3,231 ~ 327 are introduced in the distiller of a distillation apparatus fitted with a column with packing and a reflux head control. The product is distilled at 102-C at 0.5 torr at the top and 125C at the boiler with a reflux rate of 5 during topping and 1 during the tailing. one obtains, compared to the charge ini-tial:
- Heads: 348.23 g or 12.85%
- Heart: 2155.02 g or 79.55%
- Remains in the boiler: 57.94 g or 2.14%
- Volatiles condensed in a nitrogen trap liquid: 135.83 g or 5.01%.
The heads are strongly colored in yellow. The heart ~ 8 ~ gris3 ~ re.
B ~ MPL ~ 2 1.876 g of the same batch of raw P2NOC15 as that used read in Example 1, are introduced into the boiler with 72.51 g of PC15. The mixture is maintained for 2 hours at 130-C with stirring, then distilled under the same conditions ticks to those in Example 1. The heads are divided into 3 fractions. The balance of the distillation is established as follows in relation to the total initial charge:
- Heads 1: 66.64 g or 3.42 ~
(including 0.46 g of PC15) - Heads 2: 117.35 g or 6.02%
(including 0.038 g of PC15) - Heads 3: 138.62 g or 7.11%
~ absence of PC15) - Heart: 1373.46 g or 70.49 - Remains in the boiler: 12 g or 0.61%
- Volatiles: 195.03 g or 10.00%
(including 62 g of PC15) Head 1 is slightly yellow. Heads 2 and 3 and the heart is perfectly colorless.
E ~ EMPL ~ 3 (comparative) Polycondensation is carried out in a reactor 500 ml heated by circulation of oil and equipped with anchor agitation, nitrogen inlet, introduction of reagent, of an outlet of vaporized POC13, comprising a rising condenser heats ~ 140 ~ C, followed by a condenser downward POC13 vapors and a recipe graduated to receive the liquid POC13. The set is pres-surized under nitrogen thanks to a hydraulic guard.
We introduce into the r ~ actor 138.47 g (0.514 mole) of P2NOC15 from the distillation described in Example 1, which are heated ~ 265-C. We observe a clearing-~ POC13 ment whose speed between 20 and 60% conversion is 1.25% .mn ~ l. After 2.07 hours of polycondensation, the conversion tops out at 87.28%. We carry out, for 20 min, a scanning of the actor with nitrogen which makes it possible to recover 95.3%
of theoretical POC13. We then introduce ~ 97.32 g of trichlo-rodiphenyl. The temperature of the polycondensate is adjusted to 280-C. After 8.37 hours under these conditions, a sample taken on which the viscosity is measured which is:

The medium temperature is set to 270-C. Under these conditions tions, the POC13 release speed measured between 10 and 35% conversion, is 2.46% .mn-l. After 0.30 hour polycondensation, at 35% conversion, we introduce into the polycondensate 1.03 g of PC15 (0.77 mol%). The speed of POC13 release immediately slows. This speed measured between 35 and 60% is 0.52% .mn-1. After 4 hours polycondensation, the conversion tops out at 87 ~ 8%. we e ~ performs, for 15 minutes, a nitrogen sweep which allows recover 91.9% of bheoric POC13. Then we introduce 158.3 g of trichlorodiphenyl. The temperature of the polyconden-sat is set to 280-C. A series of samples is taken at different times and on each of them, a measurement of intrinsic viscosity. After 50 hours of duration total polycondensation, this viscosity is a THF
