Description

" 20`2`~592 FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a fingernail brush for the application of a composition for treatment of human nails or cuticles and particulary relates to a brush where the bristles are disposed at an angle to said brush handle.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Contemporary society generally favours long fingernails for the modern woman. However, long fingernails tend to flake, split or crack either through loss of moisture, either through the ageing process, exposure to the elements or naturally.
Accordingly various compositions of nail hardeners have heretofore been devised as canvassed in a patent application filed by Applicant on even date of this application.
Furthermore, nail polishes are frequently applied by women on their fingernails and toenails.
Fingernail brushes have typically been utilized to apply the various compositions, hardeners, and polishes to the fingernails and cuticles.
''~'' ' For example, United States Patent No. 2,426,328 discloses a fingernail polish brush used for the application of polish on to a fingernail comprising a rotationally symmetrical -~
tuft of hairs secured to the front end of a brush stem wherein ;~
-- 2~23~92 said tuft of hairs are arranged in the form of a plurality of concentric rings.
Moreover, various configurations have heretofore been devised for a variety of applications of brushes as well as apparatus for manufacturing same.
In particular United States Patent No. 2,979,362 teaches a machine for sieving bristles, especially for paint brushes.
:-Moreover, United States Patent No. 3,668,732 teaches a brush of the type commonly used in brushing and combing a person's hair.
Finally, United States Patent No. 2,426,328 teaches the manufacturing of brushes, namely toothbrushes by means of melting the ends of the bristles to assume the desired contour.
The brushes which are disclosed by the prior art and, in particular, fingernail brushes which have heretofore been constructed are relatively difficult to use, particularly when applying the composition, nail hardener, or nail polish to the underside of a finger or toenail. Moreover, the ends of the ~:
bristles on the fingernail brushes which have been heretofore -~
been used have not been constructed so as to minimize any potential damage to the cuticles when applying such compositions.
--- 20~:3 ~ 92 Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved fingernail brush which facilitates the application of composition to the nail as well as minimizing any potential damage to the cuticle when applying the composition to the nail and cuticle.
It is an aspect of this invention to provide a fingernail brush for the application of a composition for treatment of human nails or cuticles comprising: a brush handle;

In one embodiment of the invention the other end of said bristles are disposed at an angle to said handle.

Figure 2 is an expanded view showing the rounded ends of said bristle.
Figure 3 is a side view of a finger in combination with said fingernail brush.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Like figures have been like numbers throughout the figures.
Figure 1 generally illustrates the fingernail brush, 2, which comprises a handle, 4, extending longitudinally along its axial length which presents at one end a tuft of bristles, 6.
The handle, 4, may be constructed of any suitable material such as wood or plastic or the like and presents a generally longer handle than heretofore been used for the application of composition to a nail of a human. In particular, the handle is sufficiently long enough so as to enable the user to grasp the handle, 4, of the brush, 2, easily into the hand of the user for accurate manipulation of same.
The bristles, 6, are attached at one end to said handle by suitable means which is well-known to those persons skilled in the art. In particular, the bristles, 6, are arranged so that - ~0~2'3~2 the bristles become progressively lonyer as one travels from one side, 8, of the handle, 4, to the other side, 10, of the handle, 4. More particularly, bristle, 12, is longer than bristle, 14.
In particular, the bristles, 6, are disposed so as to present an angle, a, to handle, 4.
The brush disclosed in Figure 1 permits easy application of composition to the nail, 16, of a user as best illustrated in Figure 2. The composition may be easily applied by brush, 2, to both the top and underside of the nail, 16.
Figure 2 generally represents the end of the bristles, 6, which are remote from handle, 4. In particular, Figure 3 discloses that the ends of the bristles 20 are rounded. The ends 20 of the bristles, 6, are rounded so that during the application ~-~
of the composition to the nail or nail plate, 16, and cuticle, 18, the bristles do not damage, or tear the cuticle. In other words, the bristles which have heretofore been u~ed for fingernails have not been designed so as to minimize damage to the cuticle. -It has been found, for example, that by applying the composition which is the subject matter of Canadian patent application filed by Applicant on 1989/10/27 as Application N0.
2,001,688-4 to the nail, 16, and cuticle, 18, the composition may be utilized to cleanse the cuticle without damaging same. In the prior art bristles, such bristles may be cut so as to present ; ;~' ~' `0~359`2 uneven or sharp ends which may tend to irritate or damage the cuticles.
By utilizing the brush as disclosed herein with the composition disclosed in the said Canadian patent application filed by Applicant, the cuticles tend to exhibit healthy characteristics thereby permitting more energy of the body to be focused on the growth of the nail.
Cutting, clipping, tearing or damaging the cuticle 18 in any way, shape or form only encourages the cuticle matrix to produce thicker, tougher, longer cuticle tissue, in much the same way a persons skin produces a scar if it is cut, torn or damaged.
The cuticle 18 acts as a seal between the nail plate 16 and the skin, stopping harmful bacteria from invading the sensitive tissue underneath. The cuticle 18 adheres to the nail plate 16 to ensure the seals integrity. Pushing back, lifting or breaking that seal in any way, sends a message to cuticle matrix to produce more cuticle cells. Hence the cuticle 18 grows back thicker, tougher and longer.
The same is true for the seal on the bottom side of the nail at the point where the nail plate 16 become free of the skin and turns white. It is at these two "seal" areas that the final layers of tubular nail plate tissue are produced. These final layers of tissue are smooth and silky allowing the nail plate to slip freely away from the seal. Therefore, breaking or ` `` 2023~92 interfering with the seal also affects the adherence and integrity of those final outer protective layers of nail tissue.
By use the brush as described herein in combination with the composition described in applicant's Canadian patent application 2,001,688-4 it has been found that the cuticle, nail and surrounding tissue tends to return to a natural, healthy state and the cuticle 18 will recede to a healthy acceptable length without having to be cut, clipped or pushed back.
t While treating nails with the brush as disclosed herein it is suggested to gently brush away any loose or flaky cuticle tissue and to brush in the direction that the nail grows, following the natural curve of the cuticle, from the centre and down along the nail groove. Sufficient pressure should be used to remove any loose tissue but one should not apply as much pressure as to loosen or dislodge the cuticle 18. The cuticle 18 and surrounding tissue should not be reddened or irritated in any way throughout or following this procedure.
f The brush is used to gently brush away dirt and residue from the top and underside of the nail 16 in an up and down motion. The Angular cut of the brush is designed to remove any residue safely and easily from in and around the base area on the underside of the nail without damaging the delicate "seal" area.
One should not use any objects such as nail files to "scrape"
or "clean" the underside of the nail. The action tends to damage the tubular structures of the nail as well as the "seal" by ~',';
