Description
HOCKEY EOUIPMENT BAG
The present invention relates in general to carrying bags, and more particularly to a portable hockey equipment bag.
Hockey players traditionally store and carry their uniforms and equipment in large duffel bags.
Unfortunately, such prior art duffel bags do not provide for separation between wet and dry articles of clothing and equipment. Thus, the storage environment within such duffel bags is conducive to developing mildew.
Furthermore, by not providing for separation between the various pieces of equipment, it can be difficult for a hockey player to locate a particular piece of equipment (e.g. skates which need to be sharpened) when the piece of equipment is tossed in and hidden among all of the other clothing and equipment within the bag. Hence, an individual is often required to fully unpack his or her duffel bag in order to locate a particular article of clothing or equipment.
In addition, the sharp blades of a pair of skates can scratch or tear the other pieces of equipment or clothing within the bag, and can result in dulling of the blades in the event the blades are in contact with one another and jostled within the bag during transportation.
An additional disadvantage of using prior art duffel bags for the purpose of transporting hockey equipment is that such duffel bags, when fully loaded, are typically bulky and cumbersome to carry.
According to the present invention, a hockey bag is provided wherein various articles of clothing and hockey equipment may be stored in appropriately dimensioned compartments. The compartments are separated for isolating wet and dry equipment, and isolating the player's skates from the remainder of the equipment.

The shape of the equipment bag of the present invention accommodates both a handle for hand carrying as well as shoulder straps for over shoulder carrying of the bag, to facilitate ease of transportation.
Thus, in general according to the invention there is provided a hockey equipment bag, comprising a generally rectangular compartment for storing a hockey uniform and pads, a generally deltoid prism-shaped compartment for storing a helmet, hockey gloves and a pair of skates, and connecting means between said prism-shaped compartment and said rectangular compartment for selectively opening and closing said bag.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described in greater detail below with reference to the following drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hockey equipment bag in accordance with the preferred embodiment;
Figure 2 shows the hockey equipment bag of Figure 1 in an open position with equipment stored therein;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bag shown in Figures 1 and 2 in the open position without equipment stored therein: and Figure 4 is a perspective view of the bag shown in Figures 1-3 being carried over shoulder by a hockey player.
With reference to the drawings, a hockey equipment bag 1 is shown comprising a generally rectangular lower compartment 3 for storing a hockey uniform and pads, etc., and a generally deltoid prism-shaped compartment 5 for storing a helmet, hockey gloves and a pair of skates.
The hockey equipment bag 1 is preferably manufactured from 420 denier nylon with PVC backing.
The lower compartment 3 is provided with a water resistant rubberized base 6 for preventing the ingress ' ' 9 ~
of water into the bag 1 in the event that the bag is laid to rest on a wet surface.
As seen from Figures 2 and 3, the upper and lower compartments 3 and 5 are hingedly connected along a rear edge of each of the compartments such that the equipment bag may be selectively opened and closed.
When in the closed position, the compartments 3 and 5 are secured together by means of a zipper 4, or other suitable fastener.
The upper prism shaped compartment 5 is divided into a pair of gusseted zippered side pockets 7 and 9 for storing a pair of skates, and an inner trunk 11 intermediate the side pockets for storing the helmet and hockey gloves. A mesh cover 13 is provided for separating the contents of inner trunk 11 from the contents stored in rectangular compartment 3. The mesh cover 13 allows for drainage of water from the equipment stored within inner trunk 11.
Access to each the side pockets 7 and 9 is provided by means of additional zippers 15 and 17. As can be seen from the drawings, the skates stored within side pockets 7 and 9 are completely isolated from the remainder of the uniform and equipment.
As shown with best with reference to Figure 4, the eguipment bag 1 of the present invention is also provided with a pair of shoulder straps with shoulder padding and side buckles, for over-shoulder carrying of the bag 1.
In addition, a handle 21 is connected to the top most edge of the upper compartment 3 for hand carrying of the bag 1.
A further generally rectangular zippered trunk 23 is attached to the front of the lower rectangular compartment 3 for storing soap and towel, etc., (see Figure 2).

In summary, the hockey equipment bag of the present invention provides for ease of handling, as well organized and compartmentalized separation of equipment and clothing.
Additional embodiments or variations of the invention are possible within the sphere and scope of the claims appended hereto.
