Abstract
- ABSTRACT -In using a manual torquing tool such as a screw driver to turn a threaded fastener, it is known to use the palm of the other hand to apply additional axial load in order to increase turning ability and reduce slippage and wear on both tool and fastener.
In this invention, a circular curved pad is provided to the palm of the pressing hand to transmit load to the handle without direct contact between the handle and the palm, thus reducing friction and eliminating discomfort to the hand.
Said invention is positioned with the convex surface towards the palm, and can be held in place by partial closure of thumb and little finger. The invention is bi-directional, as the torque tool can be rotated either clockwise or counterclockwise, and can be used in either hand. A concentric profile on the concave surface provides a centering action on the tool handle. The invention would be provided in a variety of colours common to hand tools, and would accomodate a full range of hand torque drivers for sockets and all varieties of screwdrivers.

Description
0~8~l43 DlSC~(?SU~ = SPI~ol~ A'rlON
Thls invention relates to a hand-held pressing surface, or pad accessory to torque-driven hand tools.
~ t is common for hand tools to be used to torque or untorque threaded fastenérs such as screws, bolts and nuts.
Often circu~stances require that a greater axial load be applied to transmit the torque to the fastener while prev~nting slippage or damage to tool or fastener.
Normal hand tools such as screwdrivers accomodate light to medium axial loadling by the turnin~ hand itself during the torquing action. ~his axial load can be i~creased by pressing the palm of the other hand against the end of the screwdriver during the turnin~ actio~. This exposes the palm to direct eontaet with the turning tool, resulting in eoneentrated pressure to, and frietion witn the skin of the palm, eausing discomfort to the hand.
We have found that this operation may be improved by providing a eurved pad surface for the palm. It is convex to the palm and eoncave to the tool handle. A eoneentric profile would centralize the handle within the eoncavity during torquing.
~he tool ean be used in either the ri~ht or left hand, and for elockwise or countercloekwise torquing. When not in action, the tool is grasped in place between the -thumb and small finger.
ln drawings which illustrate embodiments of the inv~ntion, Figure 1 is a plan view OI' the tool on palm of hand.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the tool ~rasped between thumb and little finger.
Figure 3 is a side view of the tool grasped between ~umb and little finger.

Figure 4 is a side view o~ the ~rasped tool with a super-imp~sed view of the other hand holdin~ the screwdriver ready for tor~uing.
Fi~ure 5 shows the mating of the palm pad and torquing tool during the load-torquing action.
Figure 6 shows the palm pad detail.
The thickness and structure are sufficient to withstand axial loads experienced with torqui~g or untorquing threaded ~asteners. Edges are smooth and ~ot sharp.
The plastic palm pad would have a hardness equivalent to -the tool handle itself to minimize wear to both.

Claims
CLAIM
The inventors claim that this new tool, when positioned in the palm of one hand, can assist the application of an axial load to a manual torquing tool grasped in, and rotated by the opposite hand, in order to increase the torquing effort without causing damage to the fastener or tool, nor discom-fort to the pushing palm, and in which we claim an exclusive property or priveledge.
