Abstract

NO BOUNCE DART

Abstract of the Invention A no bounce dart comprising a barrel having an axial cavity in its forward end. A point is mounted at the forward end of the barrel with the rearward portion of the point being slidably disposed in the barrel cavity. The point is afforded slidable movement between an extended position wherein the rearward end of the point is spaced apart from the bottom wall of the barrel cavity and a hammering position wherein the rearward end of the point contacts the bottom wall of the barrel cavity. An O-ring is mounted in the cavity in surrounding relation to the point to continuously frictionally impede movement of the point from its extended position to its hammering position. The time delay in the hammering action of the dart provided by the O-ring avoids bounce backs.

Field o~ thQ Invention Thi~ invention relates to darts in general and particularly to a dart having a controllably r~tractable point for prevent~ng the dart from bouncing off wire~ on a dart board.

Back~round of the Invention In a dart game, a dart i5 thrown at a target marked on a dart board. T~pically, the scoring areas are outlined by a wired grid on the *ace of the dart board. When a dart point strikes a wire of the grid, the dart is often deflected away ~rom the board and land~ on the ~loor. Such an occurrencQ is o~ten r~*erred to as a l'bounc~ back." When this occurs, the dart player scores no points and the darts may be damaged or the point dulled when the dart strikes the floor.
U.S. Patent No. 4,230,322 addres~e~ this problem and provides a ~'no bounce'9 dart which avoids hounce backs. disposed in and generally coaxial with the cavity of the barrel.
The point is afforded lengthwise movement between an extended position in which the rearward end of the point is spaced apart from the bottom of the barrel cavity, and a retracted or hammering position in which the bottom wall of the cavity contacts the rearward end of the point.

An elastomeric insert is positioned in the cavity between the point and the side wall of the barrel cavity. The presently preferred elastomeric insert comprises an 0-ring in surrounding relation to the point. The elastomeric insert frictionally engages one or both of the point and the side wall of the barrel cavity to continuously frictionally impede or slow the movement of the point relative to the barrel and thus provides a time delay means for preventing bounce backs.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the dart comprises an annular collar mounted in the barrel cavity in surrounding relation to the point. The collar has a neck region at its forward end with an axial passageway therethrough and preferably comprises a hollow cylindrical body region rearward of the neck region. The point comprises an enlarged head at its rearward end which lies within the body region of the collar.
The diameter of the enlarged head is greater than the diameter of the axial passageway of the neck region of the collar to prevent the enlarged head of the point from passing through the neck region of the collar. In such an embodiment, the elasto-meric insert, preferably an o-ring, lies between and frictionally engages at least one of tha points and collar to slow movement of the point relative to the collar and barrel from its extended position to its hammering position.

7~2 1 Deta~led Description With reference to FIG. 1, there is shown a preferred dart constructed i~ accordance with the present invention.
The dart 10 comprises a barrel 12 having a shaft (not shown~
attached to its rearward end and a ~light (also not shown) mounted on the rearward end of the shaft. A point 13 1~
mounted at the forward end o~ the barrel 12. The barrel 12 comprises an a~ial bore or cavity 16 at its forward end.
The cavity 16 ~s de~ine~ by a generally cylindrical side 10 wall 17 and a generally flat bottom wall 18. Th~ ~orward section o~ th~ side wall 17 comprises threads.
An annular collar 2} i9 mounted in and line~ the side wall 17 of the cavity 16. The collar 21 comprises a forward n~ck region 2~ whlch has an axial passageway 23 extendlng through it. ThQ neck region ~2 has external threads which engage the threaded portlon of the side wall 17 of the barrel cavity 16~ Extending rearwardly of the nack region, th~ collar 21 comprises a hollow which defines a generally cylindrical chamber 25. The diameter of the axial passageway 23 is less than the diameter o~ the chamber 25.
The point 13 comprises an elongated sha~t 27 which taper~ at i~s forward end to form a sharp tip. ~t the rearward end of the shaft 27, ~he point 13 compri es an enlarged head 28 having a diameter slightly less than the diameter oP the chamber 25, but greatar than the diameter o~
the axial pa~sageway 23 o~ the collar 21. The point 13 is mounted in thQ collar 21 with the shaft 27 exkending through th~ axial passageway 23 and the enlarged head 28 o~
th~ point 13 lying within the cha~ber 25 of the collar body region 24.
The point 13 is afforded slidable movement relative to the barrel 12 and collar 21 between a fully extended posltion in which the enlarged head 28 o~ the point 13 abuts tha neck realon 22 of the collar 21 and a hammering position 1 in which the enlarged head 21 contacts the bottom wall 18 of the barrel cavity 16.

An O-ring 38 is carried in a circumferential groova 39 in the head 40 of the point and frictionally engages the ~ide wall 41 o~ the barrel cavity 35 to slow the movement o~ the point 37 relative to the barrel 42.
With reference to FIG~ 3, there is shown yet another embodiment o~ the invention. In this embodiment, the O-ring 46 is carrie~ by the collar 47 rather than by the enlar~ed head 48 o~ the poi~t 49. In such embodiment, a transverse hole i8 drilled through the collar, the diameter of the holG
51 being slightly graater than the diameter o~ the axial passageway 52. The hole 51 thuq forms notche~ 53 and 54 abov~ and below th~ axial passageway 52. The O-ring ~1 is inserted into the hole 51 so that it extends into the notcheq 53 and 54 and lies genexally in surrounding relation to th~ axial passageway 5~ The point 49 is then mounted in the coll~r 47 with the 6haft o~ the point 49 extending through the axial passageway 52 and the o-ring 46. Th collar 47 and point 49 are then mounted in the cavity 56 and barrel 57. In such an arrangement, the O~ring 46 frictionally engages the point 49, slowing movement between its extended and hammering positions.
With re~erence to FIG. 4, there ls shown yet another e~bodi~ent o~ the invention wherein tha O-ring 61 is 8imply disposed between the ~haft 62 o~ the point 63 and the cylindrical wall forming the body region 64 of the collar 65. In such an embodiment, the O-ring 6~ i5 not carried in a groov~ or ~lot in elther the point 63 or collar 65 but frictionally engage~ both the collar 65 and the shaft 62 o~
the point 63.
}t is apparent that many variations in the abova structures can be practiced without meaning~ully departing fxo~ ~he ! scopa of the :invention. ;..For example, it i~
apparent that thQ placement o~ the O-ring may vary,ias dasired. .Moreover, elastomericiinserts.other than`.~ s may be utilized in the practice o~ the invention.

Claims (11)

1. A dart comprising:
a barrel having an axial cavity at its forward end said cavity being defined by a side wall and a bottom wall, a point mounted at the forward end of the barrel, wherein the rearward portion of the point is disposed in the axial cavity of the barrel and afforded axial movement between an extended position wherein the rearward end of the point is spaced-apart from the bottom wall of the barrel cavity and a hammering position wherein the rearward end of the point contacts the bottom wall of the barrel cavity; and an elastomeric insert positioned between the point and the side wall of the barrel cavity to frictionally engage at least one of the point and the wall of the barrel cavity to continuously retard movement of the point between its extended and hammering positions.
2. A dart as claimed in claim 1, wherein the elastomeric insert is an O-ring in surrounding relation to the rearward portion of the point.
3. A dart as claimed in claim 2, wherein the O-ring is carried by a circumferential groove in the rearward portion of the point.
4. A dart comprising:
a barrel having an axial cavity at its forward end, said cavity being defined by a side wall and a bottom wall;
an annular collar mounted in the cavity of the barrel, said collar comprising a neck region at its forward end and an axial passageway extending through the neck region;

a point having an enlarged head at its rearward end disposed in the cavity of the barrel rearwardly of the neck region of the collar and a shaft extending rearwardly from the head through the axial passageway of the collar, said point being afforded slidable movement from an extended position wherein the enlarged head of the point abuts the neck region of the collar and is spaced apart from the bottom wall of the cavity and a hammering position wherein the enlarged head of the point abuts the bottom wall of the cavity; and an elastomeric insert disposed in the cavity and engaging the point and at least one of the side walls of the cavity and the collar to continuously retard movement of the point between its extended and hammering positions.
5. A dart as claimed in claim 4, wherein the elastomeric insert is an O-ring.
6. A dart as claimed in claim 5, wherein the O-ring is carried by a circumferential groove in the enlarged head of the point.
7. A dart comprising:
a barrel having an axial cavity at its forward end;
said cavity being defined by a side wall and a bottom wall;
an annular collar mounted in and lining the cavity of the barrel, said collar comprising a neck region at its forward end with an axial passageway therethrough and a body region rearward of the neck region, said body region having a generally cylindrical wall and hollow interior forming a generally cylindrical chamber, said chamber having a diameter greater than the diameter of the axial passageway;
a point having an enlarged head at its rearward end disposed in the chamber of the body region of the collar and a shaft extending through the axial passageway of the collar, said point being afforded a slidable movement from an extended position wherein the enlarged head of the point abuts the neck region of the collar and is spaced-apart from the bottom wall of the cavity and a hammering position wherein the enlarged head of the point abuts the bottom wall of the cavity; and an elastomeric insert disposed in the cavity between the collar and the point and engaging said collar and point to continuously frictionally impede movement of the point between its extended and hammering positions.
8. A dart as claimed in claim 7, wherein the elastomeric insert is an O-ring.
9. A dart as claimed in claim 8, wherein the O-ring is carried by a circumferential groove in the enlarged head of the point.
10. A dart as claimed in claim 8, wherein the O-ring is carried by the collar.
11. A dart as claimed in claim 9, wherein the collar comprises a transversely-extending hole forming notches above and below the axial passageway and wherein the O-ring is positioned in the hole and extends into the notches and wherein the shaft of the point extends through the and frictionally engages the O-ring.
