Description

;~:00703~
Method for taking a sample from a moving material web The present invention relates to a method in accordance with the preamble of claim 1 for taking a sample from a moving material web.

The invention also concerns an apparatus used for the implemen-tation of the method.

For several process variables such as humidity in a moving paper web amidst the production process (e.g., for the measure-ment of dryer section efficiency in a paper machine), measure-ments performed using conventional measurement techniques results in unreliable data. The reason for unreliable results stems from both the sensor technology and the calibration difficulties.

The aim of this invention is to overcome the drawbacks as-sociated with the technology described above and to achieve an entirely novel method and apparatus for taking a sample from a movlng material web.

The invention is based on slitting with a blade from the moving material web a narrow strip, which is then wound onto a sampling roller placed after the slitting blade and later taken to the laboratory.
. .
More specifically, the method in accordance with the invention is characterized by what is stated in the characterizing part of claim 1.

Furthermore, the apparatus in accordance with the invention is characterized by what is stated in the characterizing part of claim 6.

The invention provides outstanding benefits.

The apparatus in accordance with the invention permits a 6uitable length of a sample strip with a desired width to be taken for a later laboratory analysis from a moving material ,:

web, particularly a paper web, without severing the web over its entire width. The superimposed composition of material layers in the wound sample permits a reliable laboratory sample to be obtained from a moving material web. Hence, the inner material layers of the sample retain their original properties. The process variables such as, e.g., the moisture content, can reliably be analyzed from the sample in the laboratory. In addition, the sample serves for the estima-tion of, for instance, the roughness, bulk and strength of the web. The measurement of moisture content allows a reli-able estimation on the efficiency of dryer sections to be established. Further, reliable sampling for moisture content, coating weight, base weight, thickness and ash content of the web is achieved for the calibration of gauging equipment mounted on beams. Moreover, calibration is possible without web breaks.

The invention is next examined in detail with the help of the exemplifying embodiments lllustrated in the attached drawings.

Figure 1 shows in a side view a sampling apparatus in accor-dance with the invention.

Figure 2 shows the sampling apparatus illustrated in Fig. 1 from the installation dlrection of the sampling apparatus.

Figure 3 shows in a side view an alternative embodiment in accordance with the invention.

According to Figs. 1 and 2, the apparatus comprises a sampling roller 1, whose axis is aligned perpendicular to the machine direction of a web ~. A sample 4 is taken from the web 6 by rolling the sample strip onto the sampling roller 1. In addition, the apparatus comprises a slitting blade 2, which extends through the web 6 and is capable of slitting from the entering material web 6 a sample strip 4 of desired width to be rolled onto the sampling roller 1, while a remainder web 5 proceeds in the process. The sampling roller 1 and the slitting blade 2 are attached to a rectangular frame chassis 7 so that ~0.~ ., .

the blade 2 precedes the sampllng roller 1 in the machine direction of the web 6. The width of the sampling roller 1 is determined by the maximum width of the desired sample strip.
The typical maximum width of the sample strip 4 is approx.
60 % of the width of the sampling roller 1. The roller 1 is rotatingly mounted on bearings to the frame chassis 7. The blade 2 is attached to the opposite side of the frame chassis 7 in relation to the roller 1 so that the blade 2 is placed to the side of the frame chassis 7 facing the web 6. In the case a supporting roll 3 of the web 6 is a driven roll, the sampling roller 1 can be operated undriven, whereby the rotation of the sampling roller is obtained by pressing the sampling roller 1 against the supporting roll 3. A nip is thereby formed between the roller 1 and the roll 3. The sample strip 4 can be attached at the start of the sampling operation with the help of the nip between the roller 1 and the roll 3 about the sampling roller 1 using a tacky material on the surface of the sampling roller 1 such as two-sided self-adhesive tape. The sampling operation is started by moving the frame chassis 7 close to the web 6, whereby the slitting blade moves to the edge of the web 6 starting to slit a narrow strip from the web 6. By virtue of the tacky material on the surface of the sampling roller 1, at contact with the sampling roller 1 the strip is wound about the roller 1. Next, the frame chassis 7 is moved toward the center of the web 6, whereby the blade 2 is also transferred allowing a wider strip to be slit from the web 6. The sampling operation is concluded by transferring the frame chassis 7 toward the edge of the web 6 until the blade 2 is removed from the area of the web.

The blade 2 can also be mounted movable along rail guides in the frame chassis 7, in which case the frame chassis 7 is naturally mounted permanently to the body of the equipment.
The movements of the frame chassis 7 or the blade 2 can be implemented, for instance, manually or by means of electric motors, hydraulic cylinders, or actuators driven, e.g., pneumatically. The movement of the blade 2 in relation to the web can obvlously be automated, whereby each measurement v~,,., . ~, . .: . i . ~

program can be set to slit a sample strip with a desired length and width.

Replacing the blade shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a rotating blade or a pair of blades comprising two rotating blades can be used for slitting the sample strip 4.

Provided that ln accordance with Fig. 3 the sampling roller 10 is independently driven by a drive 11, the apparatus can be used at unsupported sections of the web, for example between guide rolls 12 and 13. In this case, however, the apparatus must be provided either with a separate actuator means 14 attached to the frame 17 for moving the roller 10 down to the web 15 and up to a rolling/stand-by position, or a separate guide (not presented) for leading the start end of the sampling strip to the sampling roller 10. The cutter 16 acts in similar way as the blade 2 in Figs. 1 and 2. In case of Fig. 3 an adhesive or some other tacky material is used for locking the sampling strip to the sampling roller 10.

Instead of the tacky surface of the sampling roller 1, mechani-cal implementations for locking the sample strip 4 to the sampling roller 1 are suitable. These kinds of implementa-- tions are known in the art from, for instance, the film guidance mechanisms of movie projectors.
