FIELD O~ I~YE~5IQ~
This invention relates to the display of ~lat planar members such as posters for view by the public.
~ÇKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Generally, posters are displayed in cinemas in a framed glass device like a picture frame within which the poster is inserted. The poster is then displayed on the wall in appropriate locations in the cinema and viewed by the public. When the film .~ 10 being shown at a particular cinema is changed, the framing device is removed from the wall, in one example the back is removed and the old poster is replaced with a new poster. The frame is then reassembled and suspended from the same location with the new , poster.
~; 15 With the popularity of video stores, more posters ~ normally displayed in a cinema are being displayed in video shops.
;~ However, in video shops often the posters are fixed or taped directly to the glass window so the public may view the poster.
Unfortunately in cold climates especially, due to condensation, the posters are normally ruined in the long term by this direct application to windows. Further, it is not convenient to suspend ~S:
posters in display frames in windows of video stores in particular as it is difficult to suspend hooks and the like from glass panels.
~, 25 Referring now to United States Patent 9,652,239 to Brimberg, there is disclosed a space planning system having a ~' paper substrate with a smooth flexible sheet of static cling vinyl electrostatically adhered to the coated surface of the paper substrate. The vinyl sheet is cut into a plurality of graphic } 30 symbol elements in the shapes of wall sections, windows, etc., and ` the entire assembly is used for laying out plans within room ,'~; ~

U.S. Patent 4,741,119 to Baryla, discloses a di~lay board for displaying behind a transparent window a sheet doc~lment which clings electrostatically on the surface of a diele(tric plastic backing board. The sheet document is covered by a ^heet of transparent thin film plastic. The plastic sheet is only connected at one edge and the sheet document is sandwiched between the backing board and the sheet of transparent plastic film. At column 2, line 22, it is described that the transparent plastic . ~
~ 10 film is attached at one edge through the backing plate. Should . .
~, this display device then be mounted on anything other than an .~
.. easel, as illustrated in the figures, the document being displayed ~: may be dislodged. Further, and more importantly, when replacing the document it is difficult to align the edges of the separated . 15 sheets because of the difficulty in handling the separate ,; electrostatic surfaces.
~; It is known in the art to coat each poster being displayed in a plastic coating much the same as a drivers license is encapsulated. However this coating is expensive and once ~ 20 applied remains with the poster so coated permanently. There is a !~ need in the-art for a device to coat a poster when displayed, ;~ which is reusable and therefore more economical to use.
. Nowhere within the prior art is there found a pouch for containing a poster. The pouch being formed from clear dielectric , 25 plastic such as vinyl and having mounting means thereon for , mounting and displaying the poster in a convenient location.
Further, nowhere within the prior art is there found a pouch for displaying a poster or the like which has tear stop portions disposed at the sides of the pouch to prevent or minimize the amount of destruction done to a pouch by insertion and removal of ~, . .

i Referring now to Figure 1, there is illustrated in , schematic terms spools S1 and S2 upon which are disposed in roll A~' form the top sheet 1 and bottom sheet 2 made from clear s transparent poly vinyl chloride which supports the build up of a ~ 30 static charge thereon indicated by the build up of electrons on ... .

;~005'73~i 9 _ the surface of sheet 1. It is necessary that the sheets be able to propagate and support a static charge. The sheets are brought ~ together and are cut into predetermined portions by a moulding device illustrated in Figure 2. The sheets 1 and 2 when formed receive an electrostatic charge from the fri~tion between the rollers in the forming process of the sheets. These rollers operate at high speeds and tend to develop the static charge with - the sheet. Normally, the static charge is considered to be a nuisance. However, this invention utilizes this natural occurring phenomenon of static charges and utilizes it as described hereinafter.
Referring now to Figure 2, there is found in schematic . terms a mould through which the sheets 1 and 2 pass. The mould includes top portions T and bottom portions B having an edge :s 15 portion H about which three sides thereof there is disposed s heating elements for welding the edges of the plastic sheets 1 and 2 together and trimming them into a pouch form as best observed in relation to Figure 3. Alternatively, ultrasonic welding devices as known in the art may be used to seal edges of sheets 1 and 2 together. The sheets are trimmed by conventional methods in forming the pouch. Thus, the top portion of the mould T and the ~. .
bottom portion B are brought together, in the direction D in s` forming the pouch. Inside the mould (not illustrated) there is formed a unique anti-tear portion at the edges of the pouch which . 25 will be hereinafter described.
Referring now to Figure 3, there is illustrated a pouch 5 having edges 11, 12 and 13 wherein the two sheets 10 and 20 are joined together by the welding process of Figure 2. The end 15, however is not joined together, thus providing an opening within which a flat planar object such as a poster 30 is inserted. The ,~, ,~ .
i' . .

200S'^73G
- lO -flat planar object 30 may be a poster of a film beinq shown ~lt a particular cinema or it may be two posters back to back each being ; viewed through the transparent face of the sheets 10 and 20 respectively.
When an individual wishes to insert a poster within the pouch 5, the individual opens the end 15 and inserts the poster between the sheets 10 and 20 upon which there is disposed an electrostatic charge. Should the electrostatic charge be dissipated it is only necessary to rub the surface of the poster once inserted in the pouch with one's hand or alternatively, with a static charge inducing device such as a piece of cloth or a well known fur to develop the static charge. Generally speaking, the static charge however is formed upon manufacture of the pouch ,~ because of the above-mentioned high speed friction between the , 15 sheets of polyvinyl chloride when formed and the rolls in the ' process. The electrostatic charge therefore causes the poster to be suspended between the two sheets of dielectric material poly vinyl chloride in a predetermined position without the need of ,` supplementary glues, adhesives or boarders formed with the pouch.
, 20 The poster may then be displayed as is illustrated in relation to Figure 6.
With the continual use of the pouch, if posters are ' changed frequently, then there is a risk of tearing the edges 13 and 11 approximate the end 15 of the welded portions ~oining sheets 10 and 20. Therefore the pouch also includes tear stops 40 ,~ to prevent and minimize the risk of propagating a separation of the welds at the edges 13 and 11 of the pouch.
,~ Referring now to Figure 4, there is illustrated the pouch having tear stop portions 40 disposed proximate the top thereof. The tear stop portions include the portions 41, 42 and ~, , .

~01~5~31;
.. Il 43. The weld proximate the edge 13 has a predeterminf~d widt'l T1.
However, the weld proximate the portions 41 and 92 ha~e a predetermined width of lesser amount than the weld at the edge 13.
The portion 43 includes the weld of predetermined width T1 as well. Therefore, voids a, and b are created which when a ~ear propagates through the section a, it will be stopped at the weld 43. Should it propagate through weld 43 it will be stopped again . at the portion b. This of course may be continued throughout the entire edge of the pouch. However, for economic reasons, it is 10 considered that the tear stop portions may be limited to two or three multiplications.
~, Referring now to Figure 5, there is illustrated the poster 30 being displayed width wise as opposed to length wise as seen in Figure 4. The openings 50 and 52 of Figure 4 are disposed ,!
on the sides of the alternative pouch illustrated in Figure 5.
The S clips 60 are provided which pass through the openings 50, 52 of the pouch and which allow for the mounting of the pouch from ,f overhead mounting portions such as chain or any convenient mounting portions. The sheets 10 and 12 formed into a pouch are formed in exactly the same manner as that described in relation to the previous figures.
Referring now to Figure 6, there is illustrated the pouch of Figure 4 suspended by alternate means from a window w of a video store. The display means includes a suction cup 70 which supports hook portion 71. The suction cup is placed against the window and used as per suction cups found in the prior art ;~ retaining the poster in position by vacuum. The portion 71 passes through the openings 50,52 thus supporting the display device or pouch 5 a predetermined distance from the window W. Of course the display is on the inside of the window I.S. and the p~blic can ' ' .

;~O()S'~3~) view the poster 30 whose face is turned toward the windo~ W from the outside O.S. of the window W. Of course the poster 30 between j the sheet portions 10 and 20 may include a double sided poster or two posters inserted between the two sheets 10 and 20 to allow advertising posters to be displayed inside the store and outside the store.
Referring now to Figure 7, there is illustrated supplementary sheet portions 100. The supplementary sheet portions 100 are formed from dielectric material such as poly vinyl chloride and are mounted upon a plastic card ]10 to which the dielectric material will adhere and be easily removed from.
The dielectric material 130 therefore having a marquee boarder 120 contains a predetermined message such as "NOW RENTING", "COMING
. SOON", "NOW SHOWING", etc. It is important that the material used such as poly vinyl chloride will support a electrostatic charge ~ when rubbed by for example hand or any other convenient mechanism.
-j As best illustrated in relation to Figure 8, the supplementary element 100 separated from the plastic sheet 110 is rubbed onto the pouch 5 at a convenient location on the face of the sheet 10 adjacent the poster 30 to indicate to the public something special :, about that particular poster. For example, if the poster were a travel poster the supplementary sheet might include the phrase "Discounted". If the poster 30 were to advertise a film then the phrase could be "Coming Soon". By rubbing the surface of the supplementary sheet 130, the sheet clings to the surface 110 of the pouch 5 by electrostatic forces. As best illustrated in ~; Figure 9, a marquee display about the pouch 5 rimming the poster :,~
~ 30 will be prepared in exactly the same manner. The supplementary ~;
sheets 130 of Figures 8 and 9 are removeable and are storable again on the card 110 by placing the appropriate supplementary .~

i .

;~O~ 3~i .
sheet on the similarly si~ed card.
Therefore there is provided a unique way of displa~ing posters and planar sheets in general in economical fashion.
.By providing a display device embodied in a pouch, the 5 poster may be mounted conveniently between the sheets of the pouch and held in position by an electrostatic charge on the sheets of the pouch. Further, supplementary signs and marquees may be xplaced in position prior to mounting the poster in the pouch or safter the poster is mounted. Following initial mounting of the ,r,'10 supplementary messages the poster may be changed as illustrated in ,'relation to Figure 3 conveniently and re-hung on the window of a '~video store for example, as illustrated in relation to Figure 6.
It is possible in an alternative embodiment to leave the edge of the pouch 12 illustrated in Figure 5 unwelded, leaving the .15 user two ends to insert the poster from. In this example the tear ~stops 40 would also be disposed proximate the end 12 of the pouch.
`'.The pouch therefore is reusable, thus more economical ~for the video store operator and the cinema operator to use. In ;~the past, the only alternative for the cinema operator and the 20 video store operator was to have the poster laminated and sealed which is a very expensive process. The instant invention provides the operator with a very cost effective reusable device which is ,easy to use, practical and does not require a whole lot of technical understanding. It is fast to set up and assemble in a 25 mount within a window. Further, to change the poster within the ~pouch is a very simple task indeed.
,~As many changes can be made to the preferred embodiments fof the invention without departing from the scope thereof; it is intended that all matter contained herein be illustrative of the 30 invention and not in a limiting sense.
