Abstract

Abstract In a novelty button or badge, it is known that they are used for advertising, identification and promoting events or products. In this invention a method has been developed in which to improve the button in which the finished button will have a scent, thus distinguishing it from other buttons or badges. The button, along with the usual imprinting of design; logo; and/or wording can also be custom scented in any scent or fragrance. The button(s) can be custom scented depending on the customer's desire using an existing fragrance produced by a fragrance company (eg. fruity, floral, chocolate, etc.) or a fragrance can be produced spacifically to copy an existing product leg.

Description

Specification This invention relates to the scenting of buttons, badges or other items worn on the person for the purpose of advertising, identification or promotion.

It is common for buttons to be used for the purpose of, announcing or promoting a product or event; as a keep sake of an event or exhibition; as a souvenir; for fund raising; for retail sale or for any worth while purpose.
Buttons are presently a visual item only to be worn or collected. Buttons have become popular yet common items in the above mentioned fields. Associations, companies, growps and/or the companies handling their advertising are constan-tly looking for new and inventive items that have the potential to be more "attractive" than previous items used by themselves or their competition.

I llave found that, by scenti1lg the button(s) or badge(s) to be worn, and with the flexability of sceliting theln witll almost any scent imaginable, tlle desire For this new invelltiorl to be overwelming.

Perfume companies l-lave been knowrl to hand out fancy embosed paper "cards", which have been sprayed or scented with their perfume, to customers in s~lopping centers and infront of perfulne displays. 1he scented "card" has limited posabilaties sllort of tllat one person andior companion actually smelling their perfullle. Wllet!ler tlle scent is liked or disliked the "card" will eitl!er~be tucked away in a purse or pocket, or discarded shortly tllere after.
It`is unlikely tllat the "card" will be kept for a long period of time or collected.~ button or badge scented with tlle same perfume will likely be (or have the putential of being) worn on a jacket, shirt or blouse. 1he scenting the bllt~torl in addition to the buttorl beillg imprinted with the fragrance ~;~ companies design or logo makes SUcIl a promotion more effercti~e, as morepeople will likely see or smell their scented button. The possabilaty of the scented buttoil being collected or worn over a period o~ time does not hurt their inlage. Tlle novelty alone, of tlle scented button on its own, even if a speci~fic p-omotion does not call for a perticular scent, when used~ will give an origionality to tllat promotion and hopefully create more awareness or the product ~"did you see the buttons XYZ company were giving out?").

A button or badge is manufactured as follows: An image is reproduced on paper in the shape and size of the desired button. This sheet or sheets are -~then laminated with a plastic using an adhesive to adhere the two together, giving the surface a glossy, lasting f;nish (as a menu in a restaurant is laminated). The laminated sheet is then cut out into the shape and size, using the appropriate die, creating a "disc". this disc is then, using an arbor type press and appropriate closing dies, is formed around a preformed shell which i~ turn is crimped onto a perforated "back" wh;ch has a pin or clasp attached so that the finished button can be worn.

~ ... 3 20~)3084 I have had good results with most methods of scenting the buttons as described, however, I have found the best results from a combination of mixing the fragrance with the adhesive along with adding a scented disc inside the button during its manufacture. The scent, over a period, will gradually become less noticable. To delay this I have found it is best to store the buttons or items in zip-lock bags so that, when they are to be used, they're at there most fragrant. I have also found that even when there is no direct scenting of - ;
paper or plastic the scent will slowly seep into the paper and plastic which results in a longer lasting scent. - -I have found no other patents resembling my scented, wearable buttons, during my preliminary search.
