Abstract

An interior mounted locking mechanism for a door is provided. The mechanism uses the concept of having a lever mechanism operating a cam which functions to draw the door inwardly against the frame and its associated seal.

Description

1FIELD OF THE lNV~NlION
2The invention relates to a locking mechanism for a 3service body. More specifically, the service body would be of 4the type comprising a hinged door adapted to engage a sealed 5frame.

6RAC~GROUND OF THE lNv~:N~lION
7Heretofore, the locks utilized on van doors of the 8above-described type have comprised a simple sliding bolt 9assembly actuated by a rotatable handle. In order to securely 10close the door, it has to be physically pushed into abutment with 11the frame which makes it physically quite difficult to lock the 12door and as a consequence is unsatisfactory.
13A patent search has revealed various lock mechanisms, 14although not for use in connection with van doors. See, for 15example, U. S. Patents 1,955,653; 2,589,872 or 3,771,376.
16However, there still existed a need for a lock 17particularly adapted for the application outlined earlier herein.

18SUMMARY OF THE lNV~NlION
19In accordance with the present invention, there is 20provided a locking mechanism incorporating the concepts of a 21lever mechanism operating a plurality of cams which function to 22draw the door inwardly against the frame and its associated seal.
23Broadly stated the invention is an interior mounted 24locking mechanism for a door, said door having a door frame with 25seal means associated therewith, which comprises: an externally 26mounted handle, a rotatable arm connected to said handle, said 27arm being functional to rotate through an only angle just greater Z000038 j 1 than 180, a cam member, and levér means, operatively connected 2 to said rotatable arm and said cam, said means being functional 3 when said arm is rotated in a first direction to draw said cam 4 inwardly into gripping engagement with said door frame and when said arm is rotated in the reverse direction to thereby release 6 said cam from said door frame.

8 Figure 1 is a side sectional view of the lock of the 9 present invention in the closed position.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the lock in the closed 11 position.
12 Figure 3 is a side-sectional view of the lock of the 13 present invention in the open position.
14 Figure 4 is a plan view of the lock in the open position.
16 Figure 5 is a front elevation of the lock of figure 1 17 mounted in the service body.
18 Figure 6 is a rear elevation of the lock of figure 1 19 mounted in the service body.
Figure 7 are side-sectional views of the door and door 21 frame respectively taken through the line A.

23 Having reference to the accompanying drawings, the lock 24 1 is adapted for use being mounted on a door 2 which fits into a frame 3 having a seal 4 therearound.
26 More specifically, the lock 1 comprises a handle 5 27 which is mounted on the exterior of the door 2. The handle 5 1 extends through a conventional recessed lock 6 which is 2 positioned on the door interior. A rotatable arm 7 is pivotally 3 connected at one end to the lock 6 via a bushing 8. The arm 7 is 4 functional to rotate slightly in excess of 180 to a point just beyond centre. At its outer end, the arm 7 is pivotally 6 connected to an adjustable swivel 9. The swivel 9 is pivotally 7 connected at its other end to a horizontal link 10 which in turn 8 is solidly connected to a vertical shaft 11. The shaft 11 g carries the cams 12 which cams are rotatable through 90. Thus the swivel 9, arm 10 and shaft 11 form the lever mechanism 11 operating the cams 12.
12 In operation, when the handle 5 is rotated in a 13 clockwise direction, the arm 7 is rotated through 180 to a 14 position just therebeyond. The swivel linkage 8 is moved laterally, causing the horizontal link 10 to rotate in an 16 anticlockwise direction. When the link 10 moves it rotates the 17 shaft 11 and the cams 12 are drawn into gripping engagement with 18 the door frame at its sealed edge. Conversely anticlockwise 19 rotation of the handle 5 will actuate the reverse mechanical movement to thereby unlock the door.

Claims (4)

1. A mounted locking mechanism for a door, said door having a door frame with seal means associated therewith, which comprises:
a rotatable arm being functional to rotate through an angle only just greater than 180;
a cam member; and lever means, operatively connected to said rotatable arm and said cam, said means being functional when said arm is rotated in a first direction to draw said cam inwardly into gripping engagement with said door frame and when said arm is rotated in the reverse direction to thereby release said cam from said door frame.
2. The locking mechanism of claim 1 wherein the locking mechanism is mounted on the interior of the door.
3. The locking mechanism of claim 2 wherein the seal means further comprises a handle in communication with the rotatable arm.
4. The locking mechanism of claim 3 wherein the handle is mounted on the exterior of the door.
