Description
l This invention relates to a swabbing mandrel of the type used to remove fluid from a pipe or casing in oil, water and other types of wells. As well as removing fluid from said pipe or casing the swabbing mandrel is frequently used to clean the interior of the pipe or casing.
More particularly the swabbing mandrel of this invention is comprised of a core which is adapted to receive interchangeable shells having different outer diameters so that a single core having an appropriately sized shell fastened thereto may be used inside pipes or casings of various inside diameters.
One embodiment of the invention comprises a swabbing mandrel for use in swabbing pipe or tubing comprised of a core, a shell, and means to fasten the shell to said core, the shell has a generally hollow cylindrical shape, the shell has two upper interior diametsrs, an upper interior diameter and a lower interior diameter, the lower interior diameter of said shell being greater than the upper interior diameter of said shell, an interior shoulder formed within said shell between the upper interior diameter and the lower interior diameter, an elongated core, said core having a top and a base, .
13262~8 1 said core having its greatest outer diameter proximate the base, said greatest outer diameter being greater than the upper interior diameter of the shell but less than the lower interior diameter of said shell, the interior shoulder of said shell adapted to be seated on the outer diameter, proximate the base of the core, and means for fastening said shell to said core in said seated position.
In-a second embodiment of the invention, the shell contains a threaded aperture, the fastening means is comprised of a threaded set screw receivable in said threaded aperture in said shell and adapted to be tightened against said core to retain the shell in a fixed position relative to said core.
lS One embodiment of the invention is shown in the attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the core of the swabbing mandrel.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of a shell of the swabbing mandrel.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of the shell of Figure 2.

_ ~3~ 1 32 62 Q8 1 Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a core 1 having a top 2. The top 2 has a generally curved leading portion 3 and cylindrical sides 4. The body 5 of core 1 is comprised of an upper first cylindrical portion 6 and a lower second cylindrical portion 7. A series of flutes 8 extend from near the top of upper first cylindrical portion 6 to close to the bottom of lower second cylindrical portion 7. Immediately below lower second cylindrical portion 7 of core body 5 is a narrowed constricted cylindrical portion 9. Below narrowed constricted cylindrical portion 9 is a second cylindrical portion 10 having the same outside diameter as the lower second cylindrical portion 7 of core body 5. Below second cylindrical portion 10 is a third cylindrical portion 11 at the bottom of core 1. The diameter of third cylindrical portion 11 is greater than the diameter of cylindrical portions 10 and 7.
As seen in Figure 2, the shell 12 is in the form of a hollow cylinder. The exterior of shell 12 has a generally sexagonal shape with ribs 13 at the joints between adjoining exterior walls 14.
As seen in Figure 3, the interior of shell 12 includes an enlarged lower interior diameter 15 near the bottom 16 of shell 12 and an upper interior diameter 17 extending through the shell 12, the upper interior diameter 17 being less than lower interior diameter 15.
1 As seen in Figure 2 the shell 12 includes a threaded aperture 19 and as seen in Figure 4 a threaded set screw 20 receivable in threaded aperture 19.
The smaller interior diameter 17 of shell 12 is greater than the outside diameter of top 2 and the outside diameter of the lower cylindrical portion 7 of core body S. The larger diameter lS near the base 16 of shell 12 is greater than the outside diameter of the third cylinder 11 at the base of--core 1. The smaller upper interior diameter 17 of shell 12 is less than the outside diameter of third cylinder 11 at the base of core 1 so that the shoulder 18 between the enlarged lower interior diameter 15 and smaller upper interior diameter 17 of shell 12 is retained on the lip of the third cylinder 11. With the shoulder 18 of shell 12 lS sitting on the lip of the third cylinder 11 between cylinders 10 and 11 of core 1 the set screw 20 is threaded~into aperture 19 until set screw 19 firmly contacts second cylinder portion 10, retaining shell 12 in a fixed position on core 1.
In operation if the shell 12 is worn or if it is desired to use the swabbing mandrel in a pipe or casing having a smaller or larger diameter, the set screw 20 in shell 12 is loosened and the shell 12 is removed over the top 2 of core 1. A new shell 12 having the same inner dimensions and outer dimensions slightly smaller than the pipe or casing in which the swabbing mandrel is to be used is lowered over the top of the core 1 until the shoulder 18 of the shell 12 sits on the ~,," .
