Description

BACKGROUND OF INVENTION:
Field of Invention The present invention relates to an improved composite jointed form which is joined by a pressure sensitive adhesive strip of sheet-like material which forms part of a frontal sheet, having a pressure sensitive back side, and disposed on an adhesive release material side of a backing sheet.
Description of Prior Art Composite jointed forms are known, and the present form is an improvement of such type of jointed form wherein two strip-like sheet materials are jointed together by a glue line joining an overlap edge portion of a release liner to an edge portion of a paper strip.
Additionally, indentations are formed from the top side of the release liner and penetrate into the adjacent strip of material to provide improved securement. A detachable form strip is then disposed over a portion of the release liner, spaced from the glued portion, with the other strip having a detachable form portion printed thereon.
A disadvantage of this type of composite jointed form is that the joint formed between the two strips of material is necessarily thick due to the presence of the adhesive release liner material, the glue layer, and the sheet material of the adjacent strip. Also, because a glue strip is formed to join the adhesive release material, glue is not evenly spread over the overlap portion of the adhesive release liner, and this forms wrinkling of the overlap area due to shrinkage of the glue and tenting at folding perforations made across the composite form. Accordingly, the joint is not a strong '?

joint, and because of this tenting and wrinkling, it may become detached and cause malfunction in high-speed operating printing machines utilized to print labels on these composite forms. They may also become detached when utilized in typewriting machines. Still further, if it is necessary to detach the adhesive release material from the composite form, this may tear some of the material that it is connected to, and does not make a clean separation.
Still further, when the overlap portions are pressed together, the glue may form beads on the edges of the material or may be exposed causing dust to adhere thereto and forming irregularities in the strips which is undesirable.
S~MMAR~ OF INVENTION:
It is a feature of the present invention to provide an improved composite jointed form which substan-tially overcomes all of the above-mentioned disadvantages of the prior art.
Another feature of the present invention is to provide a composite jointed form, and wherein two adjacent strips are interconnected by an overlapping edge portion of a pressure sensitive strip material overlapped on an edge portion of an adjacent strip of sheet material.
Another feature of the present invention is to provide an improved composite jointed form wherein the construction of the overlap joint does not r,ecessitate the step of application of a glue strip thereon.

Another feature of the present invention is to provide an improved composite jointed form wherein pressure sensitive labels are easily detached from one side of the form, and wherein an adhesive release liner material may also be easily detached.
Another feature of the present invention is to provide a composite jointed form comprised of a first strip of printable sheet-like material and a second composite strip being interconnected together by a pressure sensitive adhesive strip portion overlapping both the first strip and the composite strip whereby to eliminate wrinkling and tenting.
According to the above features, from a broad aspect, the present invention provides a composite jointed form defined by a first strip of printable sheet-like material having opposed straight parallel side edges.
A composite strip of sheet-like material is secured along a first of the side edges of the first strip. The composite strip is comprised of a backing sheet having an adhesive release material on a top side thereof and opposed parallel side edges with one of the side edges disposed closely spaced along the first side edge of the first strip. A frontal sheet of printable sheet-like material, having a pressure sensitive adhesive on the back side thereof, is disposed in facial contact with the adhesive release material of the backing sheet. The frontal sheet has a connecting edge portion which extends beyond the first side edge over a top edge portion of the first strip. The frontal sheet has an information carrying portion which is detachable from the backing sheet.

~ ~ r~ rl, JI rel BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS:
A preferred embodiment of the present inention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a section view of a composite jointed form construc-ted in accordance with the prior art;
FIGURE 2 is a fragmented section view showing the tenting effect of the composite jointed form of the prior art;
FIGURE 3 is a section view showing the construc-tion of a composite jointed form of the present invention;
FIGURE 4 is a fragmented plan view of a composite jointed form of the present invention; and FIGURE 5 is an end view of Figure 4.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS:

. .
Referring now to the drawings, and more particu-larly to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a composite jointed form according to the prior art. The form comprises a release liner strip 10 which is secured side by side with a strip of paper stock material 11. These strips of material are joined together by an overlap edge portion 10' of the release liner being secured to a top edge portion 11' of the paper stock 11 by the application of a glue strip or glue line 12 therebetween. Crimps 13 are formed in the connecting joint area in an attempt to prevent the adhesive release liner 10 from detaching itself. Because of the adhesive release liner material being formed of a waxy material, glue does not bond tightly thereto, and this strip would easily detach if the crimps 13 were not provided. Additionally, when the overlap portions are pressed together, after glueing, the d ~

glue does not spread evenly therebetween, and this results in tenting along the longitudinal edge 14 of the overlap strip portion as shown at 15 in Figure 2. This is particularly so in areas where perforated tear lines 16 are provided transversely of the longitudinal strip form.
Accordingly, this attachment easily becomes detached and causes machine malfunction when large rolls of these composite forms are used in high-speed printing machines or in typewriting machines. It is also noted that when the overlap portions of the labels are pressed together the glue may form beads 12' on the back side or top side and cause irregularities or bumps further resulting in problems when used on high-speed machines. The exposed glue also permits dust and other foreign material to adhere to the forms.
As also shown in Figure 1, a label 17 having a pressure sensitive ing 18 is disposed on the adhesive release liner 10 spaced from the joint area. In use both sides of the form, that is to say the side containing the label 17 and the side 11" of the paper sheet 11 on which a label is also printed, are used to print corresponding information thereon. The label 17 may then be peeled off and a record of the information is kept on the paper stock side 11". The label 17 may be applied to all kinds of items such as pill bottles, sample test tubes, etc.
Machine engaging holes 19 are provided adjacent opposed side edges of the composite form to thread the forms through high-speed printing machines.

~3~2~

Refering now to Figures 3 to 5 there will be described the improved composite jointed form of the present invention. As herein shown, the form of the present invention consists of a first strip of printable sheet-like material, herein a paper sheet 20, having opposed straight parallel side edges 21 and 22. A
composite strip of sheet-like material 23 is secured along the first side edge 22 of the first strip 20. The composite strip is comprised of a backing sheet 24 having an adhesive release material, impregnated on at least the top side 25 thereof. The backing sheet also has opposed parallel side edges 26 and 27, with the side edge 27 being disposed closely spaced or in contact along the first side edge 22 of the first strip 20.
A front sheet of printable sheet-like material 28 having a pressure sensitive adhesive 29 on the back side thereof is disposed in facial contact with the adhesive release material on the top side 25 of the backing sheet 24. The frontal sheet 28 has a connecting edge portion 30 which extends beyond the first side edge 22 of the first sheet 20 over a top edge portion 31 of the first strip. This frontal sheet 28 has an informatio~
carrying portion 32 which is detachable from the backing-sheet 24 by a longitudinal slit 33 extending therealong.
Therefore, the form may be easily assembled by machine without glue application.

As can be seen, the backing sheet 24 may also be easily detachable from the first strip 20 by simply peeling it off the adhesive back side of the connecting strip 30 in the area indicated by reference numeral 34.
Therefore, the first sheet 20 could also be attached to something else by area 34 of the connecting strip 30.
The composite jointed form of the present invention is also provided with transverse perforation tear lines 35 formed across the first strip 20 and the composite strip 28 so as to define labels 32' delineated by the tear lines 35, the slit line 33 and the opposed straight side edge 36 of the frontal sheet. Similarly, the first strip 20 is provided with a pair of spaced apart parallel perforation tear lines 37 to also define labels 20' adjacent the labels 32', as is the case with the prior art. A series of equidistantly spaced longitudinal machine engaging holes 38 are also provided adjacent opposed side edges 26 and 21 of the composite Eorm for engagement by various machine sprockets.
The first strip 20 is formed of a paper sheet material while the frontal sheet 28 is formed of a paper sheet material having a pressure sensitive backing adhesive 29. The connecting strip 30, being part of the frontal sheet, also provides positive engagement with the overlap edge portion 31 of the first strip due to the fact that the adhesive extends evenly between the overall surfaces, and once in contact with paper~ it does not become easily detached as with the prior art. There is also no need to provide a glue strip nor to provide crimps ~3~,~, ~i d in the joint area to secure the strips together, nor does it result result in wrinkling or tenting. The connecting strlp 30 is formed by slitting the frontal sheet at 33 after application over the strips 20 and 24.
As shown in Figure 5, after information has been printed on both adjacent labels 20' and 32', the label 32' is easily lifted from the adhesive release backing sheet 24 for application on an article.
Summarazing the advantage of the present invention, it can be observed from Figures 3 to 5 that with the constructin of the composite jointed form of the present invention there is no glue line applied to join both adjacent strips together, and the two strips are held together by an exposed strip region of the pressure sensitive adhesive frontal sheet of the composite strip.
Also, the label 28 is slit from the connecting strip 30 after the two labels are jointed together. There is no exposed glue seam behind or in front of the form as is the case with the prior art, and there is no tenting edge portion of the overlap seam to cause machine malfunction.
It is also easy to remove the adhesive release liner from the composite form should this be necessary so as to attach the form portion 20 by the exposed pressure sensitive adhesive of the connecting strip 30 secured to the form portion 20.
It is within the ambit of the present invention to cover any obvious modifications of the preferred embodiment described herein, provided such modifications fall within the scope of the appended claims.
