Abstract
ABSTRACT
A euthanasia apparatus for fur animals comprises a stationary drum having a horizontal axis. The drum has a transparent front plate with an opening at the top for introducing live fur animals and for removing dead fur animals, and a pipe stub in the vicinity of the bottom for introducing a gas, e.g. nitrogen. The drum contains a rotatable carrousel, which is divided into a plurality of spaced compartments, which are alternately positioned opposite the opening when the carrousel is stepwise rotated.

Description
13187~3 A euthanasia apparatus for fur animals ______________________________________ The invention concerns a euthanasia apparatus for fur animals.
The previously used euthanasia method on various fur animals comprises the use of a wooden box with an exhaust gas inlet. The animals are placed in a body in the box.
It is often desirable that the animals should be kept separated during the killing process since they~may begin to panic during this period. Then a possible valuable fur may be damaged. Likewise, it must be had in view that the killing of the animals should take place in the shortest possible time.
The apparatus of the invention is characterized by a euthanasia apparatus for fur animals, characterized in that it comprises a stationary cylindrical drum having a sub-stantially horizontal axis and a transparent front plate with an opening at the top for introducing live fur animals and for removing dead fur animals and a pipe stub in the vicinity of the bottom for admitting a gas, 2~ said drum containing a rotatable carrousel, which is made o4 a perforated plate and divided into a plurality of spaced compartments, which are alternately positioned opposite the opening in the front plate when the carrousel is stepwise rotated.
...IA
- -lA ~318~ ~3 Nitrogen (N2) is admitted into the apparatus through a pipe stub which is about 10 cm above the bottom rear-wardly. The nitrogen hereby displaces the oxygen~ An animal is introduced through the opening at the top in S the transparent front plate. The carrousel is rotated one compartment forwardly so that access to the surround-ings is blocked and a new compartment appears at the opening. A new animal is introduced through the opening in the compartment and so on until the carrousel is filled.
Then the first animal is removed in a killed state.
The unique feature of this process is that the animals are separated during killing so that panic is avoided, the fur remains intact, and the animals are killed in a short time (about 4 sec.). Moreover, it is possible ...2 ~3~7~3 to observe the killing process through the transparent front plate.
The invention will be described more fully below with reference to the drawing, in which fig. 1 shows the apparatus of the invention with asso-ciated nitrogen bottle and fig. 2 is a front view of the compartmentalized-carrousel.
The euthanasia apparatus for fur animals consists of a cylindric drum 1 on legs 2 with wheels, said drum l having a front plate 3 of transparent plexiglass with an opening 4 having a diameter of 10 cm. A nitrogen bottle with hose 5 is connected with a pipe stub which is attached lO cm above the bottom at the rearward end of the closed drum 1, which has a handle 8 for rotating a carrousel 6 (fig. 2).
Fig. 2 shows a tightening rim 9 for the plexiglass plate 3 (removable for cleaning of drum 1). The perforated plate carrousel 6 is divided into compartments 7. The carrousel 6 is supported by a shaft for rotating the carrousel 6. Rubber slats 11 are mounted on the outer side of the carrousel to restrict the rotational speed of the carrousel 6.
In the shown embodiment, the carrousel is devided into fourteen compartments 7 t but the number of compartments 7 may be greater or smaller according to the size of the animals to be killed. The diameter of the drum 1 should not exceed 60 cm, and its length should not ex-ceed 80 cm, as the discharge time for the displacement of the oxygen will otherwise be too great and it will be difficult to maintain oxygen-free compartments.
13~87~3 As mentioned, the front plate 3 is made of transparent plexiglass in order that the killing process may be moni-tored. The drum is made of metal, but the material for the apparatus is of minor importance. The killing effect may likewise be obtained by other embodiments than a drum form, provided that separation of the fur animals can be obtained.
