Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A door lock guard for use with a conventional knob operated lock of the mortise and tenon-type is commonly a complicated structure. A relatively simple guard of the type in question includes an elongated metal body of L-shaped cross section, one arm of the body being connected to the outer surface of the door near the lock edge, so that the other arm of the body projects outwardly for entering a slot in the door jamb when the door is closed. Such other arm blocks access to the lock bolt by means of a credit card or similar article.

Description
lL~'9~
This invention relates to a door lock guard and in particular to a guard for preventing the opening of a door lock using a flat article such as a credit card.
Door lock guards of the type described herein are not new. However, in general, such door lock guards tend to be structurally complicated and/or difficult to install.
The object of the present invention is to avoid the above-identified drawbacks of existing door lock guards by providing a relatively simple door lock guard, which is easy to install, even on existing doors.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a door lock guard for use with a conventional door jamb and lock of the type including a bolt for slidably engaging an opening in the jamb, the lock guard comprising solid, L-shaped body lS means for mounting on an outer surface of a door in the same horizontal plane as the bolt and close to one side edge of the door; and slot means in said door jamb for receiving one arm of the body means, whereby said one arm of the body means rests in the slot means when the door is closed restricting access to the bolt.
The invention will be described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from above of a door lock guard in accordance with the present invention;
3~
Figure 2 is a partly sectioned, perspective view of the door lock guard of Fig. 1 installed on a closed door; and Figure 3 is a cross section of the guard and door of Fig. 2.
With reference to Fig. 1, the door lock guard of the present invention includes an elongated metal body 1 having an L-shaped cross section. Holes 2 are provided in one arm of the body 1 for receiving screws 4 (Fig. 3) for attaching the body 1 to a door 5 near one side edge 6 thereof. The body 1 is mounted on the outer surface of the door 5, which opens inwardly in the direction of the arrow, as shown in phantom outline in Fig. 3.
The longitudinal center of the body 1 is in the same horizontal plane as the door knobs 7 and the lock bolt 8. The door is mounted in a metal jamb 10 including the conventional projection or door stop 11. An opening 12 is provided in the jamb 10 for receiving the lock bolt 8. A slot 14 is provided in the stop 11 for receiving the other arm 15 of the body 1.
In use, the door lock guard is mounted on the outer surface of the door near the side edge 6 thereof, so that when the ~0 door is closed, the arm 15 of the body 1 enters the slot 14 in the stop 11. Thus, access to the bolt 8 using a flat object such as a credit card or the like is prevented.
Of course, the dimensions of the metal body 1 are not critical, but the body 1 should be sufficiently long that it extends a substantial distance above and below the level of the lock bolt 8 when installed. Such a structure will prevent access to the bolt 8 using the normal credit card or a similar flat article. Contacting the bolt 8 by inserting an elonyated article abo~-e or below the guard is unlikely to release the bolt from the opening 12.
