Abstract
SYRINGE LOCKING DEVICE
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A syringe attachment mechanically locks the plunger with a syringe to prevent unwanted ejection or loss of the syringe contents. The attachment includes a clamp that clamps to the barrel of the syringe, an indi-cator that cooperates with the scale on the plunger bar-rel to indicate a remaining quantity of medication within the syringe and a stop that engages the thumb rest of the plunger to limit its forward movement towards the syringe barrel. The spacing in between the indicator and the plunger stop is the same as the length of the plunger itself so that the apparatus can be used to preset a specific dosage of medication to be injected.

SYRINGE LOCKING_DEVICE
The present invention relates to syringes and more paxticularly to an accessory attachment ~or use with syringes.
In some cases it is necessary or desirable for persons taking medication by injection to take several doses over a day. One example is insulin dependent dia-betics, where frequent injectlons in ~mall quantitie~
provides better control of blood sugar levels. ~owever, thls requires the carrylng of a syringe and a vial of insulin, which is lnconvenient. The present invention is concerned with the provision of an accessory that allows a syringe to be filled with a complete daily requirement of a medication and then injected in controlled quanti-ties over the day.
According to one aspect of the present inven-tion there is provided apparatus for selectively limiting a dose delivered by a syringe of the type having a barrel with a needle end and a plunger end, a plunger slideable in the barrel and having one end thereof projecting from the plunger end of the barrel, and an enlarged rest on the one end of the plunger, said apparatus comprising:
a limit indicator means Pngageable with 8~
the barrel to designate a predetermined volume within the barrel between the needle end and the limit indicator means;
clamp means for clamping the limit indi-cator means to the barrel at any selected position there-along;
rigid link means secured to the limit indicator means; and plunger engaging means secured to the rigid link means at a predetermined, fixed distance from the limit indicator means and adapted to engage the plun-ger rest to limit movement of the plunger into the bar-rel.
Another aspect of the invention provides the, combination of the syringe and the apparatus for selec-tively limiting a dose delivered by the syringe.
The limlt indicator may be clamped to the bar-rel as desired to leave a selected quantity o~ medication between the plunger and the indicator. Operation of the syringe will e~ect the selected quantity from the sy-ringe.
The syringe with the attached dosage limiting accessory may be carried in a single pen-like container.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an exemplary embodiment of the present invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus according to the present lnvention;
Figure 2 is a view like Figure 1 showing the attachment connected to a syringe;
Figure 3 is a top elevation of the attachment;
Figure 4 is an end view of the attachment; and Figure 5 is a sectional view along line V-V of Figure 4.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a syringe attachment 10 for use with a conventional hypoderm~c syringe 12. The syrin~e has a barrel 14 with a needle end 16 to which a needle 18 is attached. The opposite end of th barrel is a plunger end 20. A plunger 22 slides in the barrel and has a rod 24 projecting ~rom the plunger end. A thumb rest 26 is mounted on the end of the rod 24. A flange 28 is mounted on the barrel at the plunger end and serves as a finger grip in the usual way.
The syringe attachment lQ has a clamp 30 at one end. This is, in the illustrated embodiment, a box section 32 with aligned openings 34 that accommodate the barrel 14 of the syringe. A set screw 36 is threaded 3~78~
into one slde of the box section to engage the barrel and lock lt in place. The set ~crew has a wing head 38 to make it convenient handle. Two stops 40 are pxovided on the clamp to engage the screw head 38 in order to limit rotatlon of the set screw.
A rigid link 42 extends from the clamp 30 to-wards and beyond the plunger end 20 of the syringe. At its end remote from the clamp 30, the link carries a plunger engaging flange 44 with a curved slot 46 which accommodates the plunger rod 24. With the clamp secured to the plunger barrel and the flange 44 engaged on the plunger rod, the movement of the plunger into the syringe barrel ls limited by engagement of the thumb rest 26 with the flange 44.
The leading face 48 of the clamp 30 is used as a limlt indicator, which cooperates with the usual scale 49 on the syringe barrel to designate a particular volume of medication within tha syringe.
To use the apparatus, the plunger is depressed to remove all air from the interior of the syringe and the quantity of medication within the syringe is deter-mined from ~he scale 49. The attachment is then secured to the syringe barrel with the limit indicator face 48 located at the position along the scale 49 designating the volume that will remain in the syringe once a proper dosage has been in~ected. The clamp ls locked in that position, with the slot 46 engaged with the plunger rod 24. The syringe ls then used in the usual way, with the engagement of the thumb rest 26 with the flange 44 limit-ing the dosage to the preset ~uantity.
It is will be observed from the foregoing that the length of the syringe attachment 10 from the limit indicator face 48 to the end face of the flange 44 is the same as the full length of the plunger 22. This means that the end face of the plunger within the barrel is at the same location as the limit indicator when the thumb r~st is in engagement with the flange 44.
It follows from the foregoing that an attach-ment will be designed specifically to suit the dimensions of the syringe with which it is intended to be used, both as to plunger length and barrel dlameter.
Because the syringe is intended to hold multi-ple doses to be injected at different times, it is con-venient to provide the syringe and the attachment with a container, much ln the nature of a fountain pen, for convenient portability.
While one embodiment of the invention has been described in the foregoing, it is to be understood that 3'77~3~
other embodiments are possible within the scope of the invention. The invention is to be considered limited solely by the scope of the appended claims.
