Abstract

ABSTRACT
This invention provides a connecting member which comprises a cylindrical box formed from two identical cup-shaped connecting pieces having a centering cams uniformly distributed around the periphery thereof, and a wedge-shaped hook in each case located in the central area thereof. There is also provided a method of producing a detachable connection between two surfaces which is invisible from the outside. At least one surface belongs to a movable component, and at least one circular, box-shaped connecting member is used. The connecting member comprises two circular, cup-shaped connecting pieces each having a wedge-shaped hook projecting from the cup shape. The facing connecting pieces are so fixed to the two surfaces to be connected that the hooks, which are displaced from one another by 180°, on laterally sliding together the connecting pieces hook into one another to form the box-shaped connecting member thereby interconnecting the two surfaces. At least one of the two connecting pieces being located in a previously drilled, circular bore from which only the hook projects. At least one circular bore is drilled at a predetermined point on the surface of the first component, and in a marking gauge having a projecting centering tip which is adjustable in height is placed in the bore. The first component is pressed in a predetermined position against the surface of the second component so that the centering tip leaves behind a visible impression to aid location of a respective connecting piece on the second component.

Title: DETACHABLE CONNECTION BETWEEN TWO SURFA_S
This invention relates to a detachable connection between two surfaces, which is invisible from the outside and whereof at least one surface belongs to a movable component.

For example, the detachable connection can be used in the fitting of varnished or coated panelling and wall facings and can also be used for hanging the outer double door in the case of house doors or soundproofing doors. The connection can also be used for fitting screens, reclining seat backs, windbreak sections, mirrors and photowalls.

A connecting member formed from two aluminum segments is already known. These segments have projecting noses and are mounted on the members by adhesion. For this purpose, a special milling machine firstly makes a slot in the member and has the same shape as the bottom of the 2Q segments. An identical slot is milled into the opposite member. The segments are then bonded into the slots with a two-component adhesiveO A disadvantage of this known connection member is that the segments can often not be hung together, because they are fitted incorrectly. It is also necessary to wait a relatively long time until the adhesive has hardened. It also does not permit the fitting of a member to brickwork.

The present invention aims to provide a detachable connection which not only permits the interconnection of components in a rapid manner but in which this can also take place at precisely desired points.

According to the invention, there is provided a detachable connection comprising two identical cylindrical cup-shaped connectiDg members, each member having projections on its outer surface to ensure correct positioning of said member in a component to be connected by the detachable connection and each said connecting member further having a hook-shaped member located substantially in the centre and projecting beyond the upper edge of a peripheral rim of said cup-shaped member.

The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which:-Fig. 1 is a plan view of the inside of one embodiment ofa connecting member forming part of a detachable connection according to the invention;

Fig. 2 is a cross-section through a detachable connection comprising two connecting members which are shown fixed in two components;

Fig. 3 is a cross-section through one embodiment of a marking gauge for use in the detachable connection according to the invention; and , ~ :

Fig. 4 is a plan view of the marking gauge shown in Fig.
3.

Referring to the drawings, when it is desired to form a detachable connection according to the invention between two surfaces, a vertical or horizontal line is drawn on the surface of a first component 12 by means of a try square or spirit level and a bore is drilled at a predetermined point on the line. The drill used is a commercially available drill, which is provided with a depth regulator. The bore has a diameter of 40mm and a depth of lOmm, its shape being cylindrical in the present case. A circular marking gauge comprising a circular disc 7, a frustum 8 serving as a grip and a centering pin 10 is located in the bore. The pin 10 is adjustable in the thread 9 by means of a socket head cap screw wrench. The surface with the centering tip 10 of the first component 12 is now moved into the correct position relative to the surface of a second component 13, the centering tip 10 leaving behind an impression on the surface of the second component 13. The drill is located on this impression in order to drill a bore in the second component 13. A first circular, cup-shaped connecting member 1 of a detachable connection 11 is placed in the bore in the first component 12 and a second circular cup-shaped connecting member 1 of the detachable connection 11 is placed in the bore in the second component 13. A hook-shaped member 3 is provided in the central area of each cup-shaped connecting member and projects beyond the upper edge of a peripheral rim of the cup-shaped member. The two '~": ' ~ .

~273~69 hook-shaped members 3 are displaced by 180 relative to one another and can be hooked into one another for joining the two components 12 and 13 and to form the detachable connection 11.

The connecting members 1 can be fixed to the components 12 and 13 by means of screws or nails. Holes 5 are made in the bottoms of the connecting members 1 for the passage of such screws or nails. Additional holes 6 located laterally of the connecting members 1 are provided for screwing the latter to thinner components 12 and 13. These screws are introduced in a sloping or diagonal manner. Reinforcing ribs 4 extend from the hook-shaped members 3 to the inner wall of the peripheral rims of the connecting members 1. The outer surface of each connecting member 1 is provided with four projections 2, which are used for the precise positioning of the connecting members 1 in the bores in the respective components 12 and 13.
To enable the interconnected components 12 and 13 to move laterally relative to one another during operation thereof, the height of the reinforcing ribs 4 may be reduced in the areas 14 at the sides of each hook-shaped member 3 to permit the hook-shaped member of the other connecting member to slide thereover. By this means, two hooked together connecting members can be displaced relative to one another by a few millimeters to either side. Connecting members 1 constructed in this way are particularly suitable in cases where several components 12 are to be fitted to ~,~!. `

a component 13 so as to be laterally flush with one another or in equidistant manner. Following hooking in, the components 12 can still be moved laterally into the correct position.

The first component 12 can be unhooked from the second component and then hooked back again. Several connecting members 1 can be fixed to each component.
