Abstract

TITLE A PROTECTIVE CONTAINER INVENTORS William R Taylor Randy D. Linton Daniel L. Beaulieu John. W. Speirs ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A protective container comprising a double walled vessel and a double walled lid filled with, for example, foamed polyurethane, is provided with a malleable, lid protecting rim extending upwardly from the outer wall of the vessel for slidably receiving the lid. A downwardly extending outer sleeve is provided on the lid to cap the rim. The outer sleeve has an annular, outwardly pressed corrugation with a clamping ring in two semi-circular parts located in it. The semi-circular parts of the clamping ring are tightened together by two bolts and four nuts into gripping contact with a corrugation extending around the rim.

Description

.Z~ 629 1 This invention relates to a protective container.
It has already been proposed in United States Patent No. 4,100,860, dated July 18, 1978, K.A. Gablin et al, to provide a leakproof overpack, in the form of a double walled shipping container, for the safe transportation of radioactive and other hazardous materials. This overpack comprises a plurality of double walled sections having a foamed polyurethane filling sealed in the spaces between the double walls. The sections are bolted together and are provided with reinforcing plates at the inner surfaces of their outer shells.
While the overpack of Gablin et al has proved to be useful, there is a need for a protective container which will lock the lid against dislodgement should the lid end of the container become damaged.
Accor~ing to the present invention there is provided a protective container, comprising:
a) an open ended, double walled vessel of inner and outer walls forming a closed space between them, b) a malleable, lid protecting rim integral with the outer wall and forming a collar around the open end of the vessel, c) an impact absorbing filling of fire resistant, thermally insulating material in the closed space between the vessel walls, ~6~6zg 1 d) a double walled lid of inner and outer walls for closing the open end of the container, slidably fitting in the rim, the inner and outer walls of the lid forming a closed space between them, e) an impact absorbing filling of fire resistant, thermally insulating material in the closed space between the lid walls, and f) closure means for releasably securing the lid against dislodgement from within the rim.
Preferably the vessel outer wall has reinforcing corrugation.
In some embodiments of the present invention, the open ended vessel is an open topped cylinder and the lid is circular in shape, a downwardly extending outer sleeve having two circumferentially spaced clamp slots, and an outwardly pressed corrugation extending between the slots, is attached to a rim portion of the lid which extends beyond the:rim, a clamping ring in two semi-circular parts extends around the corrugation in the downwardly extending sleeve to slidably fit the rim, and means are provided extending through the clamp slots for drawing the clamping ring parts tlghtly against the rim.

In Figure 1 there is shown a protective container, comprising:
a) an open ended, double walled, cylindrical vessel, generally designated 1, of inner and outer walls, 2 and 4 respectively, forming a closed space 6 therebetween, b) a malleable, cylindrical, lid protecting rim 8 integral with the outer wall 2 and forming a collar around the open end 10 of the vessel 1, c) an impact absorbing filling 12 of fire resistant, thermally insulating material in the closed space 6 between the vessel walls 2 and 4/
d) a double walled, circular lid, generally designated 14, of inner and outer walls 16 and 18 respectively, for closing the open end 10 of the container 1, slidably fitting in the rim 8, with the inner and outer walls, 16 and 18 of the lid 14 forming a closed space 20 between them, e) an impact absorbing filling 22 of fire resistant, thermally insulating material in the closed space 20 between the lid walls 16 and 18, and " ~ILZ6~3i6~2~

1 f) closure means, generally designated 24, for releasably securing the lid 14 against dislodgement from within the rim 8.
The inner wall 2 is of 10 gauge, mild steel sheet with a coal tar epoxy coating and comprises a circular base 26, having an edge 28, and an upwardly e~tending, cylindrical side wall 30 welded to the base 26.
The outer wall 4 is of 16 gauge galvanized sheet steel and comprises a circular base 36, extending past 10 a cylindrical side wall 40, welded to the base 36 at the edge 38 and provided with an inturned upper edge 42 welded to the side wall 30. The side wall 40 is provided with circumferentially extending, reinforcing corrugations 44.
Tie down brackets, such as that shown and designated lS 46 r are provided at spaced intervals around the slde wall 40.
The rim 8 is an extension of the outer wall 4 and is provided with circumferentially extending reinforcing corrugations 48.
The impact absorbing fillings 12 and 22 are foamed polyurethane which has been foamed in situ.
The lid 14 is of 10 gauge mild steel.

1 The inner wall 16 comprises a cylindrical side wall 50 and a circular wall 52 welded to the side wall 50 and provided with a folded, reinforcing edge 54.
The outer wall 18 comprises a cylindrical side wall 56, an annular closure wall 58 welded thereto, and a circular, top wall 60 also welded to the wall 56.
The top wall 60 has a rim portion 62 which extends beyond the rim 8. A downwardly extending, outer, cylindrical sleeve 64 is welded to the top wall 60 and closely fits around an upper portion of the rim 8.
The sleeve 64 has an upturned reinforcing edge 65 and an outwardly pressed corrugation 66 extending there-around and containing a clamping ring generally designated 68 which slidably fits around the rim 8. The clamping ring is located so that when it is tightened it will enter a corrugation in the rim 8. The sleeve 64 has two clamp slots 70 and 71, circumferentially spaced (at 180), formed by back turned, reinforcing edges 72, 73, 74 and 75.
In Figures 2 and 3, similar parts to those shown in Figure 1 are designated by the same reference numerals and the previous description is relied upon to describe them.
The clamping ring 68 comprises two semi-circular parts 77 and 79 (Figure 3) and the following description of the manner in which two adjacent ends of the parts 77 and 79 are clamped together will apply to both pairs of ~; corresponding ends.

1 Referring now to Figures 1 to 3, the closure means 24 comp:rises the two semi-circular parts 77 and 79 of the clamping ring 68, which have four outwardly turned ends two of which are shown and designated 76 and 78, brackets, such as those shown and designated 80 and 82, welded to each of the outwardly turned ends 76 and 78, locating pins such as that designated 84 are welded to each bracket such as that designated 80 and are slidably located in a respective hole in the corresponding bracket, such as that designated 82, and screw threaded clamping bolts, such as that designated 86, extend through holes in the corresponding brackets, such as those designated 80 and 82, and are provided with nuts, such as those designated 88 and 90. The corresponding brackets, such as those designated 80 and 82, each extend through one of the slots 70 and 71, and the locating pin 84, bolt 86 and nuts 88 and 90 are situated outside the sleeve 64.
In operation, a container, such as that shown chain dotted and designated 92 (Figure 1) is placed in the vessel 1 and then the lid 14 is placed on the vessel 1 with the clamping ring 68 in a relaxed condition and disposed in the corrugation 66. The nut 90 is then tightened on the bolt 86 to tighten the clamping ring 68 into gripping contact with the rim 8.

1 Should the lid 14 become distorted by, for example, the container being dropped, the rim 8 will be distorted in the same manner so that the lid 14 will be locked on the rim 8.
The impact absorbing fillings 12 and 22 may, for example, be of polyurethane foam, vermiculite (trade name) or a fire resistant cellulose fibre.

Claims (3)

1. According to the present invention there is provided a protective container, comprising:
a) an open ended, double walled vessel of inner and outer walls forming a closed space between them, b) a malleable, lid protecting rim integral with the outer wall and forming a collar around the open end of the vessel, c) an impact absorbing filling of fire resistant, thermally insulating material in the closed space between the vessel walls , d) a double walled lid of inner and outer walls for closing the open end of the container, slidably fitting in the rim, the inner and outer walls of the lid forming a closed space between them, e) an impact absorbing filling of fire resistant, thermally insulating material in the closed space between the lid walls, and f) closure means for releasably securing the lid against dislodgement from within the rim.
2. A container according to claim 1, wherein the vessel outer wall and the rim have reinforcing corrugations.

A container according to claim 1, wherein the open ended vessel is an open topped cylinder and the lid is circular in shape, a downwardly extending outer sleeve having two circumferentially spaced clamp slots, and an outwardly pressed corrugation extending between the slots, is attached to a rim portion of the lid which extends beyond the rim, a clamping ring extends in two semi-circular parts extends around the corrugation in the downwardly extending sleeve to slidably fit the rim, and means are provided extending through the clamp slots for drawing the clamping ring parts tightly against the rim.
