FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to containers. In particular, this invention relates to cartons which have a manually engageable carrying handle.
PRIOR ART
Considerable difficulty has been experienced in attempting to provide an inexpensive handle construction in inexpensive paperboard cartons. Generally when attempting to provide an inexpensive handle construction, it is necessary to sacrifice strength characteristics or to employ a complex locking structure.
I have found that it is possible to overcome these difficulties and provide a simple and inexpensive handle construction in a con-tainer such as a paperboard carton.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to one aspect oE the present invention, a container comprises a pair of oppositely disposed side wall panels and a pair of oppositely disposed end wall panels each having an upper edge, a pair of first flaps each having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal ends being hingedly connected one to the upper edge of each side wall, a pair of handle flaps hingedly connected one to the distal end oE each first Elap, each of said handle flaps being formed with a handle opening which extends therethrough, said first ;Elaps having a sufficient leng-th to extend across an upper end oE the container to locate the handle flaps in an overlapping face-to-face upwardly extending position with said handle opening.s being arranged to be aligned with one another when said handle flaps are in said upwardly extending position, at least one second flap, each second flap having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end of each second flap being hingedly connected to an upper edge of one of said end walls, each second flap having a locking tab projecting laterally at its distal end, each second flap being proportioned to extend across the carton to overlie the first flaps and locate its locking tab in a locking position extending through said handle openings and cooperating therewith ~o interlock said first and second flaps.

, 75~t The invention will be more clearly understood after reference to the following de-tailed specification read in conjunc-tion with the drawings wherein;
Figure 1 is a plan view of a carton blank suitable for use in manufacturing a container in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, Figure 2 is a top pictorial view of the partially assembled container formed from the blank of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the container in a partially assembled configuration.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the container with its handle in the carrying position.
With reference to Figure 1 of the drawings, the reference numeral 10 refers generally to a blank suitable for use in producing a container in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The blank 10 comprises side wall panels 12 and 14 and end wall panels 16 and 18. The end wall panel 16 is hingedly connected to side panels 12 and 14 along hinge lines 20 and 22 respectively. The side wall panel 14 is hingedly connected to the end wall panel 18 along hinge line 24. A flap 26 is hingedly connected to the side wall panel 12 along hinge line 28.
First flaps 30 and 32 have their proximal ends hingedly connected to the upper edges of the side wall panels 12 and 14 along hinge lines 34 and 36 respectively.
Handle flaps 38 and 40 each consist of leg portions 42 and 44 and a bridge portion 46. The handle flaps 38 and 40 are hingedly secured to the first flaps 30 and 32 respectively along hinge lines 48 and 50. A hand opening 52 is formed in the handle flap 38 and a hand opening 54 is formed in the handle flap 40.
Second flaps 53 and 55 have their proximal ends hingedly connected to the end wall panels 16 and 18 respectively along hinge lines 56 and 58. The second flaps 53 and 55 have locking tabs 60 and 62 which project laterally from the distal ends thereof. The second flaps 53 and 55 have notches 64 and 66 each formed therein inwardly from the tabs 60 and 62. Lugs 68 and 70 project outwardly . ~ .

7~6~3 toward the tabs 60 and 62 respectively to provide a narrow entranceway 72,74 which open into the notches 64 and 66 respectively.
The bottom oE -the container is closed by a conventional bottom wall construction which includes bottom panels 82, each having a weakened fold line 86 which separates a portion 82a from the remainder of the panel 82.
In the assembly of the carton to the knock-down configuration, an adhesive is applied to the portions 82a of the panels 82 and to the tab 26. The blank is then folded in a conventional manner to secure the tab 26 to the free edge of the end wall 18 and to secure the portions 82a to the adjacent end panels 84 in a conventional manner.
The container may then be erected to the operable configuration by Eolding along the crease lines 22 and 24. This folding action will result in the bottom wall assembly assuming an interlocked position in which it will close the lower end of the container. The goods which are to be stored in the container may then be deposited within the container and the upper end may then be closed. To close the upper end of the container, the first flaps 30 and 32 are folded inwardly along the hinge lines 34 and 36 and the handle flap 38 is backfolded along the hinge line 48 to rest on the first flap 30. It will be noted that the handle flaps 30 and 32 are proportioned to have a sufficient length to extend across the width of the open upper end of the container to permit the handle flaps 38 and 40 to be located in a face-to-face overlapping relationship with the openings 52 and 54 aligned with one another.
The second flap 53 is then folded inwardly to overlie the first flaps 30 and 32 and the tab 60 is aligned with the openings 52 and 54. Handles 38 and 40 are then folded upwardly through 180 to lie against first flap 32 and second flap 53. The second flap 55 is then folded inwardly to overlie first flaps 30 and 32 and the tab 62 aligned with openings 52 and 54 and tab 60. Handles 38 and 40 are then folded upwardly through 90 to be located in the carrying S6~

position in which they are positively locked by the fact that the tabs 60 and 62 extend through the openings 52 and 54. If the closed cartons are to be stacked ra-ther than carried after closing the handles are folded through 180 rather than 90 so as to lie flat on top of first flap 30 thereby providing a stackable container in which the upper end is positively locked in a closed position.
The notches 64 and 66 axe proportioned to receive the legs ~2 and 44 with the entranceways 72 and 74 being proportioned to prevent the release of the handle legs 42 and 44 without some deformation.
The openings 52 and 54 are proportioned such that the tabs 60 and 62 will fit in a close fitting interference relationship within the handle openings 52 and 54. Of particular importance is that the edge 90 of the tab 60 and the edge 92 of the tab 64 will bear against the edges 94 and 96 respectively of the handle openings 52 and 54 to ensure that the first and second flaps are interlocked to form a secure and stable handle construction. The first and second flaps 30, 32, 52 and 54 are proportioned to substantially close the open upper end of the carton.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the container of the type described above can be erected to an open configuration to receive goods and then closed to a shipping configuration which the handle is located in an easily accessible upright or Elat position without requiring a complex and expensive panel construction.
Various modifications of the structure described above will be apparent to those skilled in the art. It will be apparent, for example, that a container merely constructed with a handle structure of the type described above without the first and second flaps being proportioned to completely close the upper end of the container, suitable viewing openings may also be formed in the walls of the container to permit the contents of the container to be examined or to admit air to the container.
It will also be apparent that one of the second end flaps may be eliminated without rendering the handle interlock 75~
D~0-3571-l inoperative. The second end flaps are provided for the purposes of locking the first end flaps together by extending the locking tab between the hand openings and this can be achieved by use of only one second flap. It will, however, be understood that the use of two end flaps to achieve the interlock improves the stability of the assembled contalner. These and other modifications of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
