Abstract

ABSTRACT
It is an object of the invention to provide a simple economic packaging device that can be easily applied to articles to be packaged to bond them for conventional transport. A paperboard container according to this invention comprises a blank having a plurality of substantially parallel fold lines. The said fold lines include a pair of end fold lines positioned one adjacent each end of the blank; the said end fold lines are spaced from the ends by unequal distances, and the said fold lines include further fold lines between said end fold lines to enable the blank, in use, to be folded to a closed cross section and to enable parts of the blank between the said end fold lines and the end to be engaged one to the other.

Description

~3~3 This invention relates to a blank and/or wrapper which will at least provide the public with a useful choice.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide the public with a useful choice.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a blank for forming a wrap-around wrapper which can be tightened about the articles around which it is wrapped, comprises: a plurality of panels which are separated by a plurality of substantially parallel fold lines therein, said fold lines including two end fold lines, each of the two end fold lines being adjacent an opposing end of the said blank to define one of two end flap panels such that the two opposing end flap panels are securable to each other in a face to face relationship to form a sleeve having a layered flap which extends longitudinally of the sleeve with the end fold lines of the respective end flap panels spaced from each other so that, in use, the layered flap is foldable about the said end fold lines to reduce the effective area of an end face of the closed blank.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a wrapper formed from a blank comprises: a sleeve having an inner surface and an outer surface a toggle panel being formed on said sleeve; said toggle panel having a top fold line and a bottom fold line; said toggle panel being singable about said top fold line and said bottom fold line to move said bottom fold line to overlie said inner surface and said top fold line to overlie said outer surface and thereby decrease the area defined by the sleeve's perimeter taken it cross-section perpendicular to said bottom fold .:

According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a wrapper which can be tightened around articles about which it is wrapped comprising a sleeve having an inner face, an outer face, a first longitudinal edge and a second longitudinal edge, first and second toggle panels hingedly connected to the first and second side edge of the sleeve along first and second hinge lines respectively, said first and second toggle panels being secured to one another such that the first and second hinge lines are arranged in a spaced parallel relationship about the perimeter of the sleeve, said toggle panels being free to hinge about said first and second hinge lines between a first position in which the perimeter of the sleeve is maximized to facilitate loading and unloading of the wrapper and a second position in which the perimeter of the sleeve is minimized to draw the sleeve tight about the articles located therein in use.
To those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the scope of the invention Jo .

~9~3 as defined in the appended claims. The disclosures and the descriptions herein are purely illustrative and it is not our intention to limit the scope of the invention by those disclosures and descriptions, or otherwise, than by *he .. -terms of the appended claims.
-One preferred form of the invention and modification thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of L. wrapper according to one form of the invention in a flat position, Figure 2 is a view of the wrapper of figure 1 in a "squared up" or erected position, Figure 3 is a view of the wrapper of figures 1 and 2 having articles placed therein, Figure 4 is a view of the construction of figure 3 with the flap closed down, Figure 5 it a diagrammatic perspective end view of an alternative embodiment of the invention, and Figure 6 is a further alternative embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawings a blank is provided which has a plurality of substantially parallel fold lines therein.
Thus a blank 1 is provided having fold lines 2, 3, 4 and 5 which may be used to "square up" or erect the-wrapper when the blank has been formed to a wrapper.
The blank has end fold lines 6 and 7 near the end of the blank 50 that an-end panel 8 is provided between fold line 6 and end 9 and a further end panel 10 is provided .. -1i~39~
between fold line 7 and end 11. The panels 8 and 10 are, to farm the blank 1 Jo a wrapper, connected or fastened together for example my adhesives such as contact adhesives or by stapling or otherwise as suitable.
The width of the panel 8 is smaller than the width of the panel 10 so that by folding the joined panels 8 and 10 about the fold lines 6 and 7 there is a toggle or fulcrum action causing the effective width of the panel or face of the wrapper which includes, the flap to be reduced.
The wrapper includes a means therein to locate articles and with reference to figures 1 to 4 these means comprising cut-outs such as cut-outs 12 so that articles such as cans 13 may be placed within the wrapper 1 with the flap in the position shown in figure 3 by placing the lower rims of the cans into what are in effect the lower row of elongated apertures and then by moving the flap into the position shown in figure 4 the effective width of face 15 is reduced so that he top rim of the cans enter the provided apertures 12 so as to substantially locate the cans in the wrapper 1.
The flap may then be held down in the locked position in any suitable manner for example by providing lines of adhesives on the flap and/or the adjacent face to provide an adhesive or glued face or another means for example by stapling the ends of the flap or by use of adhesive tape or US otherwise as desirable ', It will be apparent that a double row of cans could be located in this way as the closing action of the wrapper can ' be made sufficiently tight that the cans will be substantially - --,.--. , .

, prevented 'from moving by a locking action between the cans and the wrapper along one edge of the wrapper only.
In the construction of figure 5 a wrapper 20 icy provided --with a flap 21. In this constructions the article to be ' -wrapped is a bottle 22 and apertures are provided at I and 24 fox the corners of the bottle and also apertures can be - provided at 25 and 26 if desired to catch the top of the bottle. Once the articles in the form of bottles have been inserted the flap 21 is closed substantially as previously described to achieve a locking action.
In the construction of figure 6 a wrapper 30 has a double row of bottles 31 and apertures are provided in the wrapper for example at 32 and 33 to locate the bottles 31 T
and again the flap 34 is operated in the same manner to obtain a locked wrapper.
In use the end panels 8 and 10 are connected at to form a wrapper and articles such as cans or bottles are placed within thy wrapper with the flap in an open position. When the articles are suitably positioned the flap is moved using the old line 7 as a pivot so as to effectively close the face of the wrapper having the flap therein: This substantial locks the articles in place and the flap can be held Danube a suitable fastening device as above described.
Zen it is desired to remove the articles either the flap can be reversed in position or more lively the wrapper-will be destroyed to remove the articles.'' Other articles can be held such as rectangular articles for example, milk cartons, processed food and the like. In :

such a case the articles can be held by a friction fit within the sleeve.
Thus it can be seen that-at least-in the preferred form of the invention a blank and/or a wrapper are provided which have the advantage that a large number of closely similar, -if not substantially identical, blanks and wrappers can be provided so that sequences of substantially standard articles such as cans or bottles can be wrapped in groups in a simple yet effective manner. As the wrappers are substantially equal in size once the size has been set to obtain a firm closing action this action will be repeated on similar groups of articles and therefore the chances of loose packs being provided lo substantially obviated or minimized.
