Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

The present invention relates to a device for releasably holding an electronic meat probe while not in use.
The device comprises a body having a flat upper surface with a pair of spaced holes therein. One hole is of a diameter to receive snugly but releasably the meat probe and the other of a diameter to receive snugly but releasably the jack attachment of the probe. The body has a flat rear surface normal to the upper surface, a securing means being associated with the rear surface for securing the body to a vertical surface. When the device according to the present invention is attached to the side of an oven or in the vicinity of the oven, it provides a handy, safe place for storage of a meat probe when not in use.

Description

FI~LD OF T~ I~VE~TION
_ The present invention relates to a device for holding an electronic meat probe when not in use. Electronic meat probes of the kype in question have, at one end, a rigid pointed prong with a flange at its base, the prong to be inserted in meat in an oven. At the other end is an elongated jack attachment having a flange at its base, the jack to be inserted into a receptacle socket within the stove. A covered wire means extends between the jack attachment and the prong.

~ACRGROV~D OF TE~ ENTI~

There is presently no convenient method for storing an electronic meat probe of the type in question. Often such a probe is stored in the drawer in the kitchen, wi.th other kitchen utensils. Not only may the probe be damayed when so stored/ the wire extendi.ng between the prong ancl the jack attachment often becomes tangled with other implements in the drawer making it difficult to remove it for use and, frequently causes fraying of the covering of the wire. Because the probe is, in most situations, only infre~uently used, it may become misplaced.
Some patents, of general background interest relating to devices for holding implements include U.S. Patents Nos.
2,539,276 of Schmeling issued January 23, 1951 ~cigarette holder), 929,461 of Munn issued July 27~ 1909 (cup, envelope

None of these prior art references teaches a holder which is specifically adaptable to an electronic meat probe.
It is thus an object of the present invention to provide a device which is specifically intended to releasably hold an electronic meat probe while not in use and make the probe readily available for use when required.

SUMMARY ~F T~ INVENTION

In accordance with the present invention there is provided a device for releasably holding an electronic meat probe of -the type in question while not in use. The dev:ice comprises a ric3id body having a flat upper surface with spaced ho]es therein. E'ach hol,e hclg a uniEorm circu:Lar cross-sec-tiorl a],ong its leng-th. One hole is of a diame-ter to receive snugly but releasably the prong of the probe. The other hole is of a different diameter to receive snugly but releasably the jack attachment. The body has a flat rear surface normal to the upper surface. A securing means is associa-ted with the rear surface for securing the body to a vertical surface with its rear surface juxtaposed to the vertical surface.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the securing means comprises either an adhesive or magnetic strip secured to the rear surface for releasably securing the body to an appropriate vertical surface. As well, two cylindrical tubes extend downwardly from the holes in the upper surface in a direction normal thereto. The tubes each are of an inner diameter corresponding to the diameter of its corresponding hole.
The device according to the present invention may be secured to a verti.cal surface on the outside of the stove, in its vicinity, so the meat probe held therein will be readily visible and accessible. The device provides an attractive and economical arrangement for holding a meat probe, in which there is little or no chance of the meat probe becoming damaged by handling or from contact with othex kitchen utensils.

BRI~F D~SCRIPTIO~ OF TH~ DRAWING5 These and other objects and advantages of the invention w.ill become apparent upon reading the following detailed description and upon referring to the drawings in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a meat probe holding device in accordance with the present invention;
~'I&URE 2 is a top view of the device of FIGURE 1, partially broken away, and FIGURE 3 is a rear view of the device of FIGURE 1, again partially broken away.
While the invention will be described in conjunction with an example embodiment, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the invention to such embodiment. On the contrary, it is intended to cover all alternatives, modifications and e~uivalents as may be includecl within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

DETAIL~D DESCRIPTIO~ OF THE I~VE~TIO~

In the following description, similar features in the drawings have been given similar reference numerals.
Turning to the drawings there is shown a holding device 2 for a meat probe 4 in accordance with the present invention. The meat probe 4 is of the type having, at one end~

a rigid pointed prong 6 with a flange 8 at its base. At the other end is a jack attachment 10 having a flange 12 at :its base, the jack attachment to be inserted into a receptacle socket in a stove. ~ covered wire 14 extends between the prong 6 and the jack attachment lOo As can be seen in F~GURE 1, the holder device comprises a body 16 having a flat upper surface 18. A pair of spaced holes 20 and 22 extend through the upper surface 18 in a direction normal thereto, hole 20 being of a diameter to snugly and releasably receive prony 6, so that flange 8 rests on ~3~3~
surface l~ an~l hole 22 belng of a di.ameter to similarly snuyly but releasably receive jack attachment lO so that its flanye 12 rests on su:rface 18. The holes are centered with respect to surface 18, so that flanges 8 and 12 are supported on flat upper surface 18 when the probe is held in device 2, and these holes are spaced from each other so that these flanges do no-t overlap each other when the prong and jack attachment are in position in their respective holes.
~s can be seen in FIGURE 2, the upper surface, at the entrance to each of the holes, is provided with a bevelled surface 24 to conform with and support the bevelled lower surface of the corresponding flanges 8 and 12. Extending downwardly from each of the holes, in a direction normal to surface 18, are cylindrical tubes 26 and 28, tube 26 corresponding with hole 20 for prong 6 and having a inner diameter corresponding to that of hole 20. Similarly cylindrical tube 28, corresponding to jack attachment hole 22, has a inner diameter corresponding to that of hol.e 22. I'hese diameters may, respectively, for example, be 9/6~ inch and 9/32 inch. The length of tubes 26 and 28 is sllch that a sufficient l.enyths of prong 6 and jack attachment 10 are seated within, when the probe is normally held in device 2, so that the probe cannot wobble within the holder device 2 or become unintenticnally dislodged therefrom. Tube supports 30 extend between the sides 32 of the device and the front and back surfaces, 3~ and 36 respectively to further strengthen the device.

~;~3~
Back surface 36 of the device is normal to upper surface 18. It is preferred that an adhesive or magnetic securing means such as magnetic strip 38 be attached to bac~
surface 36, so that the device may be appropriately mounted, :Eor examp:l.e on the side of an oven or kitchen cabinet or the like. Appropriate screw holes (not illustrated) may also be provided in back surface 36, as an alternative means of securing the device in place on an appropriate vertical surface.
Thus, it is apparent that there has been provided in accordance with the invention a device for releasably holding an electronic meat probe while not in use, that fully satisfies the objects, aims and advantages set forth above~ While the invention has been described in conjunction with a specific embodiment thereof, it is evident that many alternatives, modifications and variations will be apparent to those sk:illed in the art in light of the foregoing description. Accord:inyly, it is intended to embrace all such alternatives, modi.fications ancl variations as fall withln the spirit and broad description of the invention.
