Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:

A clasp for adjustably fastening the ends of a wrist watch bracelet has an upper and a lower arm pivoted together at one end. The other end of the upper arm has a hook that lockingly engages with a pin of the lower arm that serves as a pivot for a fixing piece of the lower arm bearing against one end of the bracelet. The fixing piece also bears against an anti-slip piece pivoted to the lower arm and likewise bearing against the one end of the bracelet. The other end of the bracelet is clamped between two pressing pieces that cooperate together and that are pivotally mounted over the outer surface of the upper arm, rearwardly of the hook.

Description

~L~37289 This invention concerns a fastening clasp for the ends of a metallic wrist watch bracelet.
Because the size of the wrists differs from one person to another, manufacturers have to supply bracelets with a possible maximum size so that a wearer can adjust it to a suitable length in accordance with his wrist size.
For example, a bracelet made of leather or non-metallic material usually has several holes through which a pro-truding pin extends for connection. A watch bracelet made of metal should always be connected with a clasp, but it needs to be cut to a proper length before connection. Once it has been cut, its length cannot be prolonged even if it is desired. In the clasp structure of U.S. patent No.
4359808, once its hook-shaped nose departs away from the cross pin, the whole bracelet cannot form a circle, and therefore, a watch with a bracelet may drop off to the ground if the wearer does not hold it carefully. In U.S.
patent No. 4,446,604, granted to the present inventor, the clasp is also not adjustable between the bracelet and the upper arm, so when the wrist size is smaller or larger than average, eventhought the locking plate can be used to adjust the length of the bracelet, the watch surface and the clasp do not come in symmetrical position, which may cause an uncomfortable feeling to the wearer.
It is an object of the present invention to avoid the above-mentioned defects.
More specifically, the invention is, essentially, a clasp for adjustably fastening the ends of a wrist bracelet, comprising a lower clamping arm having an elongated base plate and sidewalls upstanding from the sides of the base plate at a forward end thereof; the base plate being formed with an opening for a first one of the bracelet ends, between the forward end and a rearward end of the base plate; an upper clamping arm having a stepped portion at a forward end thereof and a base portion at a rearward end thereof; a hook downwardly projecting from said stepped -- 1 -- ~

`~Z372~9 portion; means mounting the clamping arms at said rearward ends for pivotal movement about an axis transverse to the ends; an anti-slip piece mounted at one end to said lower arm sidewalls for pivotal movement about an axis transverse to the lower arm sidewalls; the anti-slip piece being provided forwardly of the base plate opening and having an anti-slip portion disposed, in use, above and at a distance from said base plate; a fixing piece having a forward portion projecting downwardly toward and bearing on the anti-slip end portion to press the anti-slip end portion against the first end of the bracelet when the first end extends through the lower arm openlng;
a pivot pin mounting the forward portion of the fixing piece on the sidewalls for pivotal movemQnt of the fixing piece transversally of the sidewalls; the forward portion being formed with an opening intended to give the downwardly projecting hook, of the upper clamping arm, access to the pivot pin; the hook being so located on the upper arm as to become releasably lockingly engaged with the pivot pin when the arms are pivoted one against the other to releasably hold the clamping arms in locked position.
According to a preferred embodiment, the clasp further comprises means on the base portion of the upper arm for locking the other end of the bracelet to the hase portion, the locking means comprising a top pressing piece mounted at one end thereof on the upper arm, at the junction between the stepped and base portions, for pivotal movement about an axis transverse to the upper arm; the top pressing piece including a pressure portion intended to be pressed against the outer surface of the other end of the bracelet, and side flanges on either side of the pressure portion; a bottom pressing piece, mounted at one end thereof located rearwardly away from the one end of the top pressing piece with respect to the junction and over the base portion, for pivotal movement about an axis transverse to the upper arm; a bracelet engaging part .:

123~289 upstanding at the one end of the bottom pressing piece, and interlocking means on the top and bottom pressing pieces forcing the bracelet engaging part against the top pressing piece when the other end of the bracelet is inserted therebetween for locking the other end of the bracelet.

Figures 1, 2 and 3 show a lower wrist bracelet clamping arm 1 which is provided with a pair of connection rings ~1 for use in pivotally assembling arm 1 with a companion connection ring 21 of an upper clamping arm 2 (fig. 4). Besides, the lower arm 1 comprises a base plate 12 and two sidewalls 19; the base plate 12 being provided with a stop tab 13, while holes 14, 15, are drilled through each of the sidewalls 19 and an opening 16 for a bracelet is also provided through the base plate 12.
Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7 show an upper bracelet clamping arm 2 which is provided with the above-mentioned connection ring 21 for pivotal pin assembly with the connection ring 11 of the lower arm 1; two connection holes , ,~, ..,~
2~9 23 and a hook 22 being further provided at a forward stepped portion of arm 2.
Figures 8 to 13 show means to lock one end of the bracelet. Figures 8, 9 and 10 show a top bracelet-pressing piece 31 which is drilled with two symmetrical holes 311 and which has a locking wire piece 33; the upper bracelet-pressing piece 31 being put into place by mounting the ends of wire 33 in the combination holes 23 of the upper arm 2. Figures 11, 12 and 13 show a bottom bracelet-pressing piece 32 which is provided with two support pivots 321 that are inserted in and supported by the holes 311 of the top bracelet-pressing piece 31 to form a locking assembly. In addition, the bottom bracelet-pressing piece 32 is provided with a bracelet-engaging end 322 bent at right angles in order to engagingly lock with a watch bracelet. When the top bracelet-pressina piece 31 is connected with the bottom bracelet-pressing piece 32, the pivot points 321 of the bottom bracelet-pressing piece 32 are pivotally mounted into holes 311 of the top piece 31, and nicks 323 at the other end of piece 32 fit beneath the c~nnection ring 312 o-f piece 31.
Figures 14, 15 and 15 show a fixing piece 17 which is part of an adjustable locking means for the other end of the bracelet. It is pivoted to arm 1 by a pin 172 engaging in pin holes 15 of the lower arm 1. The fixing piece 17 is formed with a nick 171 to give access to the pin 172 so that the hook 22 can be secured thereon (Figure 28).
Figures 17, 18 and 19 show another part of the locking means for the other bracelet end. It is an anti-slip piece 18 having two pivot points 181 which fit into holes 14 enabling the anti-slip piece 18 to be combined with the lower arm 1.
Figures 20, 21 and 22 show how the lower arm 1 1~37~S9 is connected with one end of the bracelet 4. One end of the latter is inserted between the anti-slip piece 18 and the base plate 12 and then through the opening 16. The length of the bracelet may thus be adjusted, and moving or locking the bracelet can easily be done by pivoting of the fixing piece 17.
Figures 23, 24 and 25 show how the upper arm 2 is connected with ~he other end of the bracelet 4, which is pinched between the top bracelet-pressing piece 31 and the bottom bracelet-pressing piece 32, and is kept in place by combining the connection ring 312 with the locking piece 33 of the upper arm 2.
Figures 26, 27 and 28 show how the upper arm and the lower arm 1 are joined to each other; the most significant point lies in that the hook 22 of the upper arm 2 engages with the pin 172 of the lower plate 1, as Figure 28 illustrates, thereby holding the arms 1 and 2 in releasable locked position.
As can be realized from the above description, the invention has the advantages that the watch bracelet is adjustable in length and the watch combined with the watch bracelet connected by means of the invention never falls of the wearer's wrist as they form a circle when loosened.
