Abstract
ABSTRACT.
A packaging system for merchandizing, transporting and utilizing adhesive striping material, wherein a plurality of packages containing rolls of stripe laminate in a variety of widths, each roll contained in an individual box of corres-ponding width and substantially standard face section, are placed within a portable rigid container of a size to contain the packages stacked in side-by-side relation to at least partially fill the container, moveable buttress means within the container abutting the end one of the packages in securing relation thereagainst, a transparent cover providing visual inspection of the package edges and permitting edge-wise individual access to each of the packages for withdrawal thereof on a selective basis from the container, and fastening means for retaining the cover in closed relation with the container. Provision is made to permit utilization of the rigid containers in secured stacked relation, or for wall mounting, or for the attachment of individual carrying handles thereto.

Description
3~
This inven-tion is direc-~ed to a packaging system, and in particular -to a sys-tem for packaging ma-terial in a range of wid-ths in a modular container.
In -the au-tomotive trade the decoration of vehicles particularly automobiles relies significantly on -the use of decorative, adheren-t laminated plas-tic tapes, which are sup-plied -to the trade in a large variety of widths, colours, and patterns, the widths -thereof ranging from abou-t 6 millime-tres (m.m) to about 80 m.m. (i.e. ~/16"up to about 3") The jobber supplying tape to the body shops has the problem of supplying and restocking from a wide range of package widths, so that packaging of a supply of such -tapes is difficult, while in the body shops the lack of organisation of the tape packages part-i-cularly in the shop environment, i~ C v~ v e~ c e~
leads to significant loss and wastage, and the i~nY~e~e and lost time caused by misplacement.
In accordance with -the present invention there is provided a packaging system comprising a plurality of packages in a variety of edge widths having a standard face section, a rigid container sized to contain the packages stacked in side-by-side relation to at least partially fill the contalner~
moveable buttress means abu-tting the exposed end face of the end one of the packages in securing relation thereagainst, transparent cove~ means hingedly secured by one edge thereof to provide access to ~he packages for selective individual edgewise withdrawal thereof from the con-tainer, and fastening means for retaining the cover means in adherent closed re-lation with the container.
In the preferred embodiment the container is made in the form of a sheet metal box ha-ving a clear plastic door in closing relation wi-th the open side of the bo~, being ~ .
~37~
hinged along one edge -thereof. The preferred fas-tening means comprise one or more magnetic elemen-ts secured to -the inner face of the door and positioned to make contact ~ith a portion of -the box me-tal wall, for adheren-t at-trac-tion by the magnetic elements thereto.
The tape packages, comprising cardboard boxes wi-thin which the tapes are contained each have a square face approx-imately 140 m m side dimension (5-~"). The con-tainer has a "floor" approximately 1~8 m.m.deep, bounded by the back wall of the container, and at the front by a shallow lip or sill that forms a par-t of a front pla-te, to which the magnetic elements of the door adhere.
The front opening of the container is bounded on three sides by U-section portions of the container top and end walls in the form of a lintel and two side jambs, and at the bot-tom by the noted front sill, to provide door opening or aperture some 15 m.m. deeper than the tape box edge, to facilitate insertion and removal of a selcted box of tape, including space for inserting the finger-tips of a user effecting such removal. The con-tainer is some 580 m.m. long to provide a useful floor length of some 520 m.m. on which the tape boxes can stand.
The effective length of the container floor is optionally controlled by a magnetic based abuttment member which can be readily repositioned in securing relation against the end face of the nearest box, to retain the boxes in close packed stacked relation within the container, yet facilitatlng rapid removal, replacemen-t or supplementing of the quantity of tape boxes contained therein.
Card re-taining means associated with the oontainer permits utili~ation of a stock card for purposes of inventory control.

The provision oE a detachable handle, and handle a-ttachment means on the con-tainer facilitates -the individual portabi~lity of -the container, usually by the person applying the -tapes.
In addition, container mounting recesses on -the back, top and bottom of each container adapts them for individual wall mounting, or for assembly as a stack of modules.
By slightly offset-ting -the pos-terior mounting recesses to a posi-tion rearwardly of the an-terior moun-ting recesses the containers may be stacked in semi-pyramided relation, thereby providing an upward clearance for each of the doors above its respective container, to permit the respective door to stand upwardly open when that container is in use.
The offsetting effect may also be achieved by appropriately slo-tting one or both sets of the mounting recesses.
~ertain embodiments are described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Figure 1. is a general view of the subject container itl an empty condition;
Figure 2 is an end section a-t 2-2 of Figure 1, Figure 3 shows the abuttment member;
Figure 4 shows a pair of containers in pre-stacking relation;
Figure 5 shows a handle means in dissassembled rela~tion with a container, and Figure 6 is a front view of a portion of the subject containe`r having a plurality of assorted tapes in secured rela~tion therein.
Referring to -the drawings, a container 20 has a top 22, end walls 24, bottom 26 and back wall 28.
A transparent door 30 made of acrylic or the like and attached by a piano hinge 32 is provided with a pair of magnetic pads 34 which, in the closed position of the door , . . .
~7~
make con-tac-t wl-th -the front wall por-tion 36 of container 20.
The slll por-tion 38 o f fron-t wa]l 36 bounds the bottom edge of -the door aperture 40, thls aper-ture 40 being bounded by a lin-tel 42 and jamb portions 44 of U-section (see Figure 2).
An abut-tmen-t means 46 has an abu-ttment portion 48 and a base 50, with a magnetic pad 52 secured thereto, such that the abuttment means 46 is securely anchored and effectively secures the packages 50 against undue displacement within the container 20.
Card :retaining .~ans 51 comprises a spring clip by means of which a stock card 54 is shown attached to -the rear wall 28 of the container 20. It will be evident that alter-native loca-tions for the card 54 may be selected.
Referring to Figure 3, apertures 56 in -the top of one contalner 20 can be aligned with correspondi:ng apertures located in the bo-ttom of the above-adjacent container 20, and bolt means 58 secured in attaching relation therethrough, to secure the containers 20 in stacked relation.
Thè provision of keyhole apertures 66 in the rear wall 28 permit the containers 20 to be wall mounted.
.Alternatively, a handle 62 may be secured by screws 64 extending through apertures 60 in the top 22 of container 20. Z
The present arrangement thus provides a packaging system suited for making up a selected order of tape packages of predetermined number and variegated sizes at a supply source such as a jobber, retaining the packages in secure protected relation for transportation to a user, and affording the user facilitated access to the packaged contents of the container, in a working mode selected from a plurality of such modes.
